FIFA World Cup 2026 | RO-16: Argentina 3 - 2 Egypt

Defending champions Argentina produced a dramatic late comeback to beat Egypt 3-2 in their FIFA World Cup Round of 16 match at Atlanta Stadium, on 7 July 2026. Egypt made a confident start and took the lead through Yasser Ibrahim in the 15th minute. Argentina had a golden chance to equalize before the break, but Lionel Messi's penalty was brilliantly saved by the Egyptian goalkeeper. Although Argentina controlled the game with 17 shots compared with Egypt's four, they struggled to break down a determined Egyptian defence in the first half.

The second half brought even more excitement. Mostafa Ziko doubled Egypt's lead in the 67th minute, leaving Argentina with a huge task. However, the South American side refused to give up. Cristian Romero started the comeback in the 79th minute before Messi finally found the net in the 83rd minute to level the match. Egypt thought they had scored one goal, but after a VAR review, the goal was ruled out. Deep into stoppage time, Enzo Fernández struck the winning goal in the 90+3rd minute, completing a remarkable turnaround. Argentina also committed 13 fouls, while Egypt recorded 10 in a fiercely contested match.

Argentina showed the heart of champions by fighting until the final whistle. Egypt's brave performance won many admirers, but it was Argentina's never-give-up spirit that secured their place in the quarter-finals.
