Switzerland booked their place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 quarter-finals after a tense 0-0 draw with Colombia ended in a 4-3 penalty shootout victory at BC Place Vancouver on Tuesday (8 July 2026). Neither side could find a breakthrough during 120 minutes despite creating several promising chances. Switzerland enjoyed slightly more possession (53%) and completed 567 passes with an impressive 88% pass accuracy, while Colombia looked more dangerous in attack, producing 15 shots compared to Switzerland's seven. However, both teams managed only a handful of efforts on target, and the goalkeepers stood firm throughout the match.
The game was fiercely contested, with 43 fouls shared between the teams and five yellow cards shown. Colombia also won seven corners, but Switzerland's disciplined defence held strong when it mattered most. The penalty shootout brought the drama to life. Granit Xhaka, Zeki Amdouni, Cedric Itten and Ruben Vargas calmly converted for Switzerland, while Manuel Akanji missed. Colombia scored through Juan Fernando Quintero, Jorge Campaz and Luis Díaz, but Davinson Sánchez and Jhon Hernández failed to convert, allowing the Swiss to edge through 4-3 on penalties.
Switzerland showed great composure under pressure and made the most of their chances in the shootout. Their calm finishing and resilient defending earned them a deserved place in the quarter-finals, while Colombia's World Cup journey ended in heartbreaking fashion.
