Shocking Violence Against Kuki-Zo Women Demands Action

THE serene fields of Manipur, long meant to be places of sustenance and hard work, have once again been transformed into scenes of unutterable tragedy. On 15 September 2026, two Kuki-Zo women: 76-year-old Mrs Phalneichong Sitlhou and 28-year-old Miss Kimjalhing Singson, were brutally shot dead while they were workign in their farm fields in Leisangphai village, Tamenglong district. Kimboi was a newly graduated nursing student who had dedicated her life to healing others, yet her future was cruelly cut short as she helped her family in the fields. This devastating attack, allegedly carried out by Naga militants, is not an isolated event. Just two days earlier, a Kuki-Zo couple, Mr Seineh Singsit and Mrs Lhingngai Singsit, met a similar fate at L. Tollen village, Tamenglong district. On that very same black day, Mr Thangvel Roel Gangte, an only son, and Mrs Julie Gangte, who was carrying unborn life, were slain while returning home in Noney’s Longpi village, leaving another woman grievously injured. These recurring horrors have sent waves of profound grief and shock across the entire region, tearing apart the delicate fabric of human decency.

What makes these incidents particularly heart-wrenching is the systematic targeting of those who play no part in armed conflict. Between March and September 2026 alone, as many as 26 Kuki-Zo civilians including men, women, children, and two unborn infants, have lost their lives to attacks attributed to Naga armed groups operating in the region. One must ask a fundamental question that weighs heavily on every conscious mind: why are innocent people still being targeted by Naga militants? Farmers working to feed their families, young graduates looking forward to a bright future, and expectant mothers preparing to bring new life into the world should never become casualties of political hostility or ethnic strife. Violence directed against unarmed civilians only deepens the atmosphere of fear, multiplies everyday suffering, and destroys any hope for meaningful reconciliation. The killing of innocent people has no place in a civilised society, and such acts of barbarism deserve unequivocal condemnation from every section of the public and leadership.

The time for quiet expression of sympathy has long passed; concrete action is now an urgent imperative. The state and central governments must act swiftly to restore law, order, and public trust in these vulnerable borderlands. Authorities must launch an immediate, thorough investigation to identify the perpetrators responsible for these heinous acts, arrest them without delay, and ensure they are punished to the fullest extent of the law. Allowing armed groups to act with impunity only fuels further lawlessness and emboldens those who commit atrocities against the defenceless. Armed factions must recognise that targeting women, children, and pregnant mothers will never yield a political solution or advance any cause; it only leaves behind a legacy of shame and bitter sorrow. Society as a whole must stand firm against violence, demand accountability from those who bear arms, and ensure that basic human rights and safety are guaranteed for every citizen, regardless of their identity.
