2 Kerala MP visits strife-torn Manipur

Manipur Government has sided with one community, supporting criminals: Kerala Congress MPs

Two Congress MPs Hybi Eden and Deen Kuriakose from Kerala visited Manipur to take stock of the current situation. Their visit was made secretly due to the restrictions imposed on Congress delegation in riot-affected areas. After their visit, the MPs concluded that the state government has sided with only one community, and supporting the miscreants.

Pic: Two MP from Kerala visits St Paul’s Church in Imphal which was destroyed on 4th May 2023.

According to the MPs, Manipur has become like a warzone. “We visited a few camps and met innocent people who lost their family members. Many are in hospitals. People are suffering there due to the lack of medicines. We met some students, who have been separated from their parents and have no clue about their education. The state government has failed to address these issues. Manipur is burning for more than a month now. What action has the Biren Singh government taken to deal with these issues?” said Hydi Eden and Deen Kuriakose.

“We visited Saint Paul’s Pastoral Centre in Imphal. A day before our visit, there was a massive attack against St.Joseph School which is functioning in the same campus. A group of people hurled bombs at the school and stones were pelted too. The school is a temporary camp of  RPF. The attack continued for more than 4 hours.”

“The minorities are unsafe here and are accusing the state government and Manipur police of siding with only one community. Thousands of houses of the people have been burned down, which has rendered them helpless and clueless about their future. Now this issue is not only of Manipur but a humanitarian crisis for everyone.”

‘’Manipur is being ruled by brutality. We were told that weapons, including guns, were given to one group to attack the other. We saw people queuing for hours in front of ATMs despite living in Digital India. There is no internet in the state for more than 40 days. Despite terming this as an ethnic riot, many Christian churches were destroyed. Even the Christian churches and institutions of the Meithei sect were set on fire.’’

“We did not inform anyone of our visit and went there as regular visitors. We will meet the Prime Minister, the Home Minister, and Congress High Command to brief the real story of Manipur.’’- the MPs said.

Manipur violence: 7-year-old boy, mother, relative burnt alive in ambulance

All three victims had taken shelter at an Assam Rifles camp in Kangchup, around 15km west of Imphal, since May 3 when clashes broke out between the two communities

Devadeep Purohit Calcutta Published 07.06.23, 05:25 AM

A 2,000-strong Meitei mob allegedly torched an ambulance in front of police on Imphal’s outskirts on Sunday, burning alive a seven-year-old boy, his mother and a relative who were being taken to hospital with bullet injuries.

The deaths were reported earlier in sections of the media but more details started emerging only on Tuesday.

The dead have been identified as Tonsing Hangsing, 7, his mother Meena Hangsing, 45, a Meitei Christian married to a Kuki, and their relative Lydia Lourembam, 37, also a Meitei Christian.

They had earlier been injured in firing by rioters at the Assam Rifles camp where they and many Kukis were staying.

Sunday’s mob attack on Meitei Christians buttresses claims that a longstanding ethnic rivalry — between the majority and mostly Hindu Meiteis and the tribal and overwhelmingly Christian Kukis — has descended into religious-communal strife under the state’s six-year-old BJP government.

All three victims had taken shelter at an Assam Rifles camp in Kangchup, around 15km west of Imphal, since May 3 when clashes broke out between the two communities over the Meiteis’ demand for Scheduled Tribe status, which the ST Kukis oppose.

“We have been facing a lot of atrocities from the Meitei community since May 3, but Sunday’s incident was the worst,” said Paolenlal Hangsing, a relative of the dead who had seen them off when the ambulance left the Assam Rifles camp for the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences and Hospital, Imphal.

“The bodies were charred… only some bones could be found in the ashes,” Paolenlal, a schoolteacher, said.

He said he had not accompanied the trio in the ambulance because he was a Kuki and the vehicle was to pass through Meitei-dominated areas.

“Meena and Lydia are Christians but as they belong to the Meitei community, we thought they would not be attacked. But even they were not spared,” said Paolenlal, who has been staying at a school building, near the Assam Rifles camp in Kangchup, that has been converted into a relief camp for Kukis.

While the government of chief minister and BJP leader N. Biren Singh, whom many Kukis accuse of inflaming Meitei-tribal relations with his policies, claims to be toiling to restore peace, questions have been raised over the police’s role during and after the violence.

“No one from the police has contacted me — I am too scared to go to the police station,” a distraught Joshua Hangsing, who lost his wife and son in the ambulance attack, told The Telegraph over the phone.

Joshua, who is yet to receive the bodies, has since the ambulance attack been living with relatives in Keithelmanbi, a Kuki-dominated village.

This correspondent tried to contact DGP Rajiv Singh, ADG (law and order) L. Kailun, and the security adviser to the chief minister, Kuldeep Singh, for information about Sunday’s incident and the action taken by the government. None of them responded to the calls or text messages.

Sources in the Assam Rifles and the Rapid Action Force (RAF), both central paramilitary forces, provided accounts of Sunday’s atrocity that invite the question whether the police did enough to protect the family when it was attacked near Iroisemba, an area under the Lamphel police station in Imphal West district. It’s a Meitei-dominated area about 5km from Imphal City.

“Several Kuki families have been living in our camp. This leads to occasional firing from outside, targeting areas where the Kukis have been living. On Sunday, three people, including the child, were injured in one such attack,” a senior Assam Rifles officer said.

Following the standard operating procedure, the camp officials got in touch with Ibomcha Singh, the Imphal West SP, and urged him to arrange to take the victims to an Imphal hospital.

A preliminary report sent to the Assam Rifles headquarters indicates that the bullet injuries were reported at 16.03pm, following which the victims were given first aid at the camp, and that the SP was informed at 16.20pm.

The ambulance left the compound with the patients and a nurse under the SP’s supervision at 17.16pm. None from the Assam Rifles, which has often faced attacks from Meitei rioters, accompanied the ambulance lest there be trouble on the way to Imphal.

“The SP, who was with the ambulance, called one of our seniors at 17.31pm and informed us about an attack on the ambulance by a mob. He said there was a major law-and-order problem,” an Assam Rifles source said.

What happened next was narrated by an RAF source, who said the SP had called a senior RAF officer and sought immediate reinforcements to tackle “a law-and-order situation surrounding an ambulance”.

“Responding to the call, a large contingent left for the area. But it returned to the barracks after the SP called again to say that the situation was under control,” the RAF source said.

Sources in the Assam Rifles and the RAF said they learnt later on Sunday evening that the ambulance had been set on fire in front of the SP and three people had died. The driver and the nurse apparently fled the spot.

“The incident is surprising — we had never before come across any attack on medical facilities or ambulances since being stationed in Imphal to tackle the situation here,” an RAF source said.

Repeated calls and text messages to Ibomcha Singh yielded no response.

Sources in the Manipur government said that senior officials of the police and civil administrations were busy in meetings throughout Tuesday. During the day, the newly appointed chief secretary held a videoconference with senior officials to assess the situation.

Government sources have been claiming that the situation is moving towards normality following the visit by Union home minister Amit Shah — who has appealed to all to surrender arms and maintain peace — and the constitution of a judicial commission to probe the violence. But many ordinary people disagree.

“The situation hasn’t improved; the mistrust and the hate between the communities has only gone up. I don’t know where we are heading,” said L. Otsei Khongsai, principal of the Manger English School, Kangchup, where seven-year-old Tonsing was a Class I student.

While the official death toll from the 34-day-old unrest is 98, unofficial estimates put the figure higher.

Manipur violence: MZP urged AMMA to fulfil its responsibility

AIZAWL, JUNE 15: Today, the Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP) General Headquarters in Aizawl held a meeting with the All Mizoram Manipuri Association (AMMA) at their headquarters to discuss the suffering of the Kuki-Zomi-Mizo people in Manipur. The meeting was chaired by MZP President Pu Lalnunmawia Pautu, while the six-member AMMA delegation was led by their President Pu Wahengbam Gopeshore. AMMA explained the contents of their memorandum to the President of India through the Mizoram Governor, and both groups discussed the initiatives they have taken.

MZP and AMMA resolved that the Meitei leadership should take all necessary steps to alleviate the suffer

ing of the Kuki-Zomi-Mizo tribals in Manipur and should also meet with the Union Home Minister and the Chief Minister of Manipur.

MZP urged AMMA to fulfil its responsibility as a Manipuri organization in the ongoing conflict in Manipur, stating, "It is very difficult for us to simply watch the suffering of our people (Kuki-Zomi-Mizo) in Manipur while you enjoy freedom and security in our own state, Mizoram. You must take initiative directed towards a better outcome, as the worst thing can also happen to you. In order to prevent the same thing that is being done to the Zo people (Mizo-Kuki-Zomi) in Manipur from happening to you in Mizoram, you must promptly do whatever you can to de-escalate the situation." The MZP added, "We will monitor your undertakings."

The meeting concluded by deciding to brief and analyse the initiatives of the All Mizoram Manipuri Association in the near future.

It is important to note that Manipur has been riling under ethnic unrest since May 3 where Zo-Kuki people including ethnic Mizos have been targetted in Manipur. Although it has been portrayed as a Kuki-meitei conflict, All Zo tribes including the tiny Mizo Minority in Imphal has been terrorised with their properties looted and vanadlaized. According to sources from Mizos that fled from Imphal, the attack on the Zo people began on May 3 and was also carried out to Mizo establishment and people in Imphal since May 4, all Mizos in Imphal has fled the state.

Manipur Violence: Old Woman Shot Dead inside Church while Praying

Indigenous Tribal Leaders’ Forum (ITLF)

Conglomerate of Recognised Tribes in Lamka District, Manipur

 PRESS RELEASE

Thursday, 15th June 2023

On 14th June, the Coordination Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) issued a statement valorizing the “Supreme sacrifices” of supposed Meitei “volunteers” who had died in the attacks on Kuki Zo villages like H. Khopibung, Khamenlok, Chullouphai, P. Phainom, Aigejang, Thambol, Jordanphai, Songjang and Govajang in Kangpokpi district over the past 3 days. All it takes is a simple search in Google map to know that the villages are tribal Kuki Zo villages with the nearest Meitei village at least a few kilometres away. This then begs the question, how did those supposedly ‘innocent civilians’ die in a tribal Kuki Zo village? The only logical conclusion is that they were part of the constant attacks on the tribal villages in the area. Village Defence Volunteers have no option but to defend themselves when attacks are made on their villages.

The COCOMI had already declared a proxy war on the alleged “Chin Kuki Narco terrorism” on 7 th June as propaganda to mobilize Meitei mobs and justify the unending attacks on Kuki Zo villages. This goes in line with open threats of genocide against the Kuki Zo tribals made by Pramot Singh, chief of Meitei Leepun on National Television! Enough evidence has already been made public of the complicity of the state in allowing these radical groups to have a free reign on the people. The Central Armed Forces have been doing their best to establish peace by creating buffer zones between Meitei and Kuki Zo tribal areas. However, it has been reported that large Meitei mobs, numbering in the thousands, and consisting of a large number of Women (Meira Paibis) blocked the central forces from reinforcing the affected areas of conflict while those villages were attacked.

Today marks the end of the 15 day call for peace made by the Union Home Minister Amit Shah during visit to Manipur. Far from complying with the requests of the Union Minister, there has been a heightened second wave of attacks on Kuki Zo villages in Sugnu Kangchup and Khopibung areas. The tribal population will never feel safe as long as the communal state and its radical agents are allowed to freely terrorize Kuki Zo villages. There is an urgent need to provide security to the Kuki Zo tribal villages from the unending incursions by Meitei militants. The ITLF reiterates the need for the immediate imposition of President’s Rule in the state in order to create conditions for peace and dialogue.

The institutional oppression of the Kuki Zo tribals is clearly in the current crisis insensitive orders issued by various state institutions concerning the resumption of classes for college students, attendance of offices for government servants, etc knowing fully that the only thing that the Kuki Zo tribals had been hunted down and ‘ from the valley. Those who survived the May Massacre are left with just their bare clothes and the scarred memories of their loved ones being killed in the open streets. All that awaits the tribals in the valley is death and even more oppression. This has necessitated the total separation of administration of the Kuki Zo tribals from Manipur. This is the only solution that safeguards and protects the lives of the tribals from the oppression of the state of Manipur, and ensure lasting peace in the region.

3 innocent Kuki tribals killed in attack in Khoken village

LAMKA, 9 June, 2023:
Khoken village, located at the Kangpokpi-Imphal border, came under heavy attack by Meitei militants disguised as army personnel and using army vehicles on June 9th, 2023. Using the pretext of conductingcombing operations, the militants opened fire at the Kuki villagers, killing Mr Jangpao Touthang, Mr Khaimang Guite, and Mrs Domkhohoi. Mrs Domkhohoi was shot dead while saying her prayers in the village church.

The Gorkha Regiment stationed nearby learned of the attack and came to the rescue of the villages. The Meiteimilitants are suspected to be a combination of the Arambai Tenggol members and surrendered militants of Valley-based Underground Groups.

Surprisingly, some Imphal valley-based newspapers allegedly reported that the deceased woman is suspected to be a "sniper-shooter of Kuki militants".
