Thangkhal Community Harvest Day: A Joyful Tradition in the Hills

A warm look at the Thangkhal community’s harvest day, showing cutting, threshing, gathering and sharing food together in the peaceful hills of Thangkhal Land, 'Khalgam'.

THESE photos show a beautiful harvest day in the hills, where the Thangkhal community gathered to reap the fruits of their yearlong hard work. The sunny hillside is filled with tall grass, small trees and scattered red wildflowers swaying in the breeze. Men and women walk through the field, cutting ripe rice plants with sickles as part of Buh-Aat, the first stage of harvesting.

In other photos, groups of people are seen spreading the rice on red sheets for Buhvel or Buhsat, where the grains are threshed and separated from the chaff. Large bundles of straw lie beside them, glowing warmly under the bright blue sky. Families and friends sit together on the ground, sharing simple food served on fresh green banana leaves. Children and elders alike join in, making the moment joyful and memorable.

As evening falls, the final picture shows the group sharing a warm meal under a single lantern, surrounded by the day’s harvest. This 'Bulak' (harvest) is a peaceful and heartfelt scene that reflects unity, tradition and gratitude.

Two Killed by Drunk Soldier at Funeral in Kanpetlet

TWO civilians were shot dead by a drunk soldier during a funeral in Kanpetlet Township, Chin State, according to local sources. The funeral was being held for victims of a military airstrike that had taken place a day earlier.

The tragic shooting occurred on October 25, when a soldier, reportedly intoxicated, fired his weapon recklessly during the service. Witnesses said the incident appeared to be unintentional. "One person said one thing, another said another. They said he was drunk and fell, and the gun went off. I don't know for sure," said a resident of Kanpetlet.

The victims of the shooting were identified as Ma Mar Si (16) and Ko Chaing Htan (27).

Just a day before, on October 24, the military council had conducted three airstrikes using two jet fighters on the wedding of a Chinland Defense Force (CDF–Kanpetlet) commander in Kanpetlet town. That attack killed three people, including a female CDF member, and injured at least 15 others.

The funeral for those killed in the airstrike was being held when the fresh tragedy unfolded.

From Lamps to Light: Finding the True Meaning of Diwali Through Christ

EVERY year, the festival of Diwali fills the streets and homes of India with light, colour, and celebration. Known as the Festival of Lights, Diwali marks one of the most joyful times for millions of people. It is believed to have begun with the story of Lord Rama, who returned to Ayodhya after defeating the demon king Ravana. To welcome him home, the people lit oil lamps, or diyas, symbolizing the victory of good over evil, and light over darkness. In other parts of India, the festival is also linked to the goddess Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and prosperity. People clean their homes, light lamps, and pray for blessings in the coming year.

The main idea of Diwali is simple yet powerful — it celebrates the triumph of good and light over evil and darkness. It reminds people to live with truth, kindness, and hope, even in difficult times. In many ways, this message connects beautifully with the teachings of Jesus Christ, who said in John 8:12 (NRSV): “Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, ‘I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life.’”

Just as lamps are lit during Diwali to drive away the darkness of night, Jesus came to drive away the darkness of sin from human hearts. The oil lamps fade after a few hours, but the light of Christ continues to shine forever. While Diwali lamps illuminate homes, Jesus’ light brightens souls. In Him, we find a light that never burns out — a light that gives peace, purpose, and forgiveness.

Darkness, in the Bible, often represents sin, evil, or the works of Satan. Just as the people of Ayodhya rejoiced at the return of Rama, Christians rejoice at the coming of Christ, who defeated the powers of darkness once and for all. He is our eternal source of hope. The difference between the two is that while Diwali looks back to a legend of victory, Christ’s light is a living truth that continues to guide hearts today.

Interestingly, this time of year also holds deep meaning for the Zo people. Around September and October, they complete their harvest season — a time of hard work, patience, and prayer. After gathering their crops, the Zo people celebrate with festivals to thank Lungzai, their primitive divine, for blessings of rain, sunshine, and fruitful harvest. This is, in a sense, their own thanksgiving festival — a moment to express joy and gratitude for God’s goodness.

When we put these celebrations side by side — Diwali’s lamps, Christ’s light, and the Zo people’s thanksgiving — we see a common desire among all: to celebrate goodness, to give thanks, and to walk in light.

As Christians, we can appreciate the beauty of Diwali while remembering the deeper truth that the greatest light comes from Christ Himself. He calls us not only to receive His light but also to share it with others — to be lamps that shine in a world still filled with darkness.

So this season, as the lights of Diwali glow and the harvest festivals bring joy, let us open our hearts to the true Light — Jesus Christ — who brightens every corner of life with hope, peace, and everlasting love.

KSO Delhi Demands Separate Administration: “Popular Government is 'Forged' Justice”

The Kuki Students’ Organisation (KSO) Delhi & NCR held a peaceful protest at Jantar Mantar, New Delhi on Saturday, 25 October 2025, calling for a “Separate Administration” for the Kuki–Zo community in Manipur. The demonstrators carried banners reading Popular Government is 'Forged' Justice – Separation is True Justice.”

The programme began with a solemn tribute to those who lost their lives in the ongoing ethnic conflict in Manipur, including victims of brutal killings and sexual violence. The gathering paid respects to the late Florence and Olivia, the beheaded Richard Thiek, and several Kuki–Zo village volunteers whose bodies were mutilated.

Rev. Wilson Gangte, Pastor of Gangte Christian Fellowship (GCF), Delhi, led the opening prayer, setting a solemn tone for the event.

According to the KSO Delhi & NCR, over 220 lives have been lost, more than 60,000 people displaced, and hundreds of villages destroyed since violence erupted in May 2023. Many survivors remain in relief camps without adequate food, shelter, or healthcare.

The KSO also highlighted the looting of over 6,000 guns, 14,400 bombs, and 6.5 lakh bullets from police armouries in Manipur, calling it the “gravest threat to national security since independence.” The group criticised both the state and central governments for failing to recover the majority of these weapons even months after the incidents, warning that the unchecked proliferation of arms has worsened insecurity in the hills.

In his keynote address, Dr. L. Thangpu Guite spoke with emotion and determination. He said:

“We stand stronger than ever — declaring before the world that we will not be silenced.”
“We do not seek to break India — we seek a Separate Administration within India, where our people can live free from fear, govern ourselves, and rebuild our future.”

Ms. Glady Vaiphei Hunjan, Advisor of the Kuki–Zo Women Forum Delhi, made a passionate appeal:

“Government of India, don’t send us back to the Imphal valley — to our murderers, rapists, and those who chased us out. We love India deeply, but we need a solution from the Central Government. Please don’t send us back.”

Mr. Paokhup Guite, President of KSO Delhi & NCR, said in a statement:

“The pain we carry is real, but so is our determination. Our call for a Separate Administration is not rebellion — it is survival.”
“Let Delhi hear us loud and clear — the Kuki–Zo people will not fade into silence. We will rise again, rebuild our villages, and reclaim our dignity.”

Other speakers, including Ms. Marlyn, Convenor of KZWFD, and Mr. Thangminlal Doungel, Vice President (Admin) of KSOD&NCR, sharply criticised Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh, the Arambai Tenggol group, and Meitei militants, insisting that “separation is the only solution.”

KSOD&NCR advisor Mr. Boilen Haokip urged the Central Government to declare a Union Territory (UT) for the Kuki–Zo region:

“Declare UT for Kukiland. We will make India better and beautiful. We will fight and die for India like our brave forefathers. No UT, no rest.”

The Kukis have a long history of bravery and patriotism. They fought against the British from 1917 to 1919 (Anglo Kuki War) to defend their ancestral land. Many Kukis later joined the Indian National Army (INA) under Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose during India’s freedom struggle. Of the 188 recorded freedom fighters from Manipur, 162 were Kukis, and their names are engraved at the INA Memorial Complex (estd. 11985) in Moirang. However, there are growing concerns that these contributions could one day be erased due to deep-rooted hatred. Historically, the Kukis also protected and saved Meitei kings from their enemies.

However, the list of freedom fighters from Manipur is not available or displayed on the official website of the INA Museum (inamuseum.mn.gov.in) as of today’s access. This raises the question of whether the concerned authorities or the state are withholding this vital piece of information, which the public has remained unaware of until now.

Mr. Letkholun Suantak called for unity among the Kuki–Zo community, saying, “We must stand together as one to achieve our demands.”

A memorandum submitted to the Prime Minister of India highlighted five key demands:

  1. Justice and Accountability – Independent and transparent investigations into atrocities since May 2023.

  2. Separate Administration – Creation of a Union Territory with its own legislature to ensure safety and equality.

  3. Safeguard Against Forged Justice – Protection from systemic injustice under the current state administration.

  4. Humanitarian Relief and Rehabilitation – Immediate support for displaced families with housing, healthcare, and education.

  5. Maintaining Buffer Zones – Preservation of existing boundaries between Kuki–Zo and Meitei areas to prevent renewed conflict.

The event was hosted by Mr. Nick Gou Kuki and Ms. Chochong, featuring spirited slogans in both English and Hindi.

The peaceful gathering concluded with the national anthem “Jana Gana Mana”, sung with deep respect and patriotism, followed by a closing prayer from Pastor Lalminlian Samte of the Zou Christian Bible Church (ZCBC).

A Little Boy’s Hard Work on Delhi’s Streets – A Glimpse of Harsh Reality

ON a quiet roadside in South Delhi, beneath the shade of tall trees, a young boy sits on a blue tarpaulin. In front of him lies a heap of peanuts, neatly piled, and beside them are plastic bags filled with local snacks — chikki (peanut brittle), namkeen, fried lentils, and crispy treats. The boy looks no older than fifteen. A few steps away, a slightly older boy — perhaps his brother — is busy arranging things or sorting through a bag.

The sight is both humbling and heartbreaking. This is the National Capital — New Delhi — a city known for its towering buildings, expensive cafes, and endless rush. Yet, amid all that, scenes like this quietly remind us of another side of the city — one where life is a daily struggle.

It is easy to imagine that this young boy should be in school, learning and playing like any child his age. But poverty often has its own way of shaping destinies. The cost of living in the capital has become unbearable for many — from house rents that rise every year, to electricity bills that can reach ₹9 or ₹10 per unit. For many migrant families, especially those from the North East, the burden is even heavier. Some landlords demand a security deposit of ₹3,000 to ₹5,000, which often becomes nearly impossible to recover when tenants move out. Excuses are made, and the money is conveniently deducted.

For families caught in this cycle, every rupee matters. So, instead of schoolbooks, the boy holds a plastic bag. Instead of a playground, his world is the pavement. Whether passers-by stop to buy from him or simply walk past, we do not know. But what is clear is his quiet strength — the determination in his eyes as he guards his little business of peanuts and snacks.

Life is not a bed of roses. It demands sweat, effort, and persistence. Watching him sit under the Delhi sun is a reminder that behind every handful of peanuts sold, there lies a story of survival, of dreams put on hold, and of endless hope that someday, things will get better.

As the Bible says, “By the sweat of your brow you will eat your food until you return to the ground” (Genesis 3:19). Hard work remains the only path to sustenance.

There is no substitute for hard work in human life. The little boy’s silent perseverance is a lesson to us all — that even in hardship, dignity and effort shine brighter than despair. His story may be small, but his strength speaks volumes about the human spirit.

Welcome Home Ava Khara ~ Yambem Laba, Senior Journalist

It was in August 1994.The NSCN (I-M) had just shot dead 21 Assam Rifles personels on the Maram Peren Road.It was the 15th of August and I was present at the Independence Day 'At Tea 'event at the Raj Bhavan.

When I asked the old soldier as to whether he would be attending their last rites or farewell, Lt.Gen.VK Nayar (Retd.) didn't flinch a word and said " Sorry those Bastards" deserve to die. They were on foot march till they hoped on to a BRTF Truck to cut short to Base camp in a hurry. That was when they were cut down.

The next day BBC London called me up and took my interview and at the end asked  me as to where they can locate the NSCN(I-M) leaders.I simply told the lady on the line " try either Bangkok or the Haigh in Netherlands. That at 8.30 as I listened to the BBC I heard my name being announced first and after what I had to say was said then came the announcement "We now have Issac Chishi Swu" of the NSCN at the Haigue. So we had shared the same BBC platform on that fateful August evening in 1994.
I have not ever met the Ato Kilonser Ava Khara Thiuengaleng Muivah but I have reason to believe that at one of his consultative meetings at Camp Hebron he is said to have remarked " he writes well" but should be kept under observation.

Then I wrote a scathing article on Muivah and his _dying days and the future of the NSCN for the Statesman.

And unlike our Meitei Patriotic groups who would immediately come and fire at your house or have you abducted and made you confess before the media , the NSCN (I-M) gave a para by para rebuttal to my story.

I did not respond to their reply but"I salute them for their maturity.

I however had spent a week with his rival SS Khaplang of the NSCN(K) and then Chairman of the UNLF in the Thai-Laos border in 1997.And during the week I was closeted with him he never had a rude remark on Oja Muivah. All he said was that we were together once now we are separated but maybe one we will be together again. He also emphasized on the principle of forgive and forget.

For the record Oja Muivah would have lost his life on a day in August 1988 when Hemi  Nagas were closing on  him till "Kakwa" Lukhoi who was then Vice-Chief of the MPA came rushing to his Quarters upon instructions from Meghen shouting "Ava Khara Ava Khara" run they are coming to kill you and later Lukhoi told me that Oja Muivah took just two minutes to pack his things and slipped out through the back kitchen door.

Lukhoi is still alive today and so am I to live to tell the story.
Ava Khara welcome home back again and when you leave please leave a message so that this land can survive and thrive together.
