FIFA World Cup 2026 | Third Place: England 6 - 4 France

On 18 July 2026, ENGLAND and FRANCE went head-to-head at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami for the FIFA World Cup third-place play-off, producing an extraordinary 10-goal spectacle. England flew out of the traps in a rampant first half, building a stunning four-goal lead thanks to an early strike from Declan Rice (3') and an Ezri Konsa header (18'), followed by a quickfire double from Bukayo Saka (37', 45+1'). Thomas Tuchel’s side exploited every gap in the French defence with ruthless efficiency, leaving Les Bleus completely overwhelmed before the break. However, half-time tactical adjustments by Didier Deschamps sparked a dramatic turnaround. Kylian Mbappé pulled one back in the 48th minute, before Bradley Barcola scored (54') and Mbappé struck again (66') to pull the score back to a tense 4-3.

The second half turned into a thrilling end-to-end battle as France threw everything forward in search of an equaliser. Saka seemed to settle English nerves by completing his hat-trick from the penalty spot in the 87th minute, but Ousmane Dembélé struck late in stoppage time (90+6') to make it 5-4 and keep French hopes alive. Finally, in the 98th minute, Jude Bellingham embarked on a brilliant solo run to score England’s sixth and wrap up a breathtaking 6-4 win. Astonishingly, despite the high stakes and defensive chaos, it was a remarkably clean contest: the referee did not need to issue a single yellow or red card throughout the entire match.

Overall, both sides played their part in an unforgettable World Cup spectacle, but England were fully deserving of the bronze medal. France were undoubtedly the superior team in the second half, showing tremendous spirit to mount a comeback behind Mbappé’s heroics. However, Les Bleus ultimately left themselves with too steep a mountain to climb after a disastrous opening forty-five minutes. England's devastating first-half blitz and ability to seal the match under late pressure made them the stronger team overall on the night.
