Kuki map unacceptable, asserts NPO

SENAPATI, Nov 29 [TSE] : The Naga People's Organization (NPO) has joined other Naga civil organizations in Manipur in voicing against the Kuki State Demand Committee's (KSDC) projected map.

The apex Naga body of Senapati district has termed the claim of the KSDC as 'unacceptable and fabricated'. The NPO has asked the Kuki organization to immediately withdraw the map to prevent confusion among the general public.

"Defining and demarcating its boundary without any historical facts is disturbing and provoking. Moreover, claiming its rights over the land which are within the ownership of the Nagas is all the more resenting and immature on the part of the KSDC.

"Therefore, it is advised that, the KSDC ceases to project all artificial claims for public interest and communal harmony," the NPO advised.

"The Nagas in Senapati district since time immemorial have been defending its ancestral identity, land and resources, and it will continue to do so if asked for", it asserted. While respecting the genuine aspirations and movement of KSDC for a separate administration, it should be clear to all, that the Nagas will not part an inch of its ancestral land. Making tall claims without any ownership and historical basis will only hamper the pursue for peaceful co-existence of different communities.

The NPO advised the KSDC to be instead aware of anti-tribal forces within the State Government that seek to jeopardize the peaceful movement for resolving tribal issues in Manipur.

Hitting out at organisations based in the valley, the NPO said that commenting on the Naga and Kuki movements through ethnic lines and past records, such organizations have been instrumental only in inciting communal tension rather than bridging the gap between the difference among the tribals and the State Govt.

The NPO endorses the decision of the UNC for Alternative Arrangement through a peaceful parting with the majority community. It said that harmony among the brothers can be achieved with.

"Moreover, the step-motherly attitude of the State Government towards the tribal movement is obvious and visible by past and recent policies in the form of endorsing the communal voice of the valley based organizations which claims to defend the integrity of the state while the tribals are neglected, discriminated and repressed everyday," the NPO said.

Zee journalists sent to 2 days' police custody

New Delhi, Nov 28 (IANS): A Delhi court Wednesday sent two Zee News journalists to two days' police custody. They were arrested on an extortion complaint filed by Congress MP Naveen Jindal's company, Jindal Power and Steel Ltd.

Metropolitan Magistrate Gomti Manocha sent the duo to two days' custody of Crime Branch of Delhi Police till Nov 30 and dismissed their bail plea.

Delhi Police had sought three days' custody of the journalists to interrogate them, and said that while reporting on the matter, the Zee News misreported facts and "there was an element of deception involved".

Sudhir Chaudhary, head of Zee News, and Samir Ahluwalia, head of Zee Business, were arrested here Tuesday on charges of attempting to extort Rs.100 crore from Jindal Power and Steel Ltd. in exchange for not filing news reports linking the firm to the irregular coal blocks allocation.

The Jindal Group filed an extortion complaint against them.

Police booked both the journalists under Sections 384 (extortion), 120(b) (criminal conspiracy) and 511 (punishment for attempting to commit offences punishable with imprisonment for life or other imprisonment) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Before arresting Chaudhary and Ahluwalia Tuesday, police also charged them under Section 420 (cheating).

During the hearing, advocate Rebecca John appearing for the journalists told the court that both were innocent and respectable individuals. Counsel denied the allegations made by the Jindal Group that they attempted to extort Rs.100 crore from the company.

She added: "Money was never involved in the case and there was no deal. Where is the crime?"

John told the court that the meeting between the Jindal Power and Steel Ltd. (JPSL) officials and the two journalists was held only because the company's officials had called both the journalists, and her clients had not made any deal with JPSL.

Public prosecutor Rajiv Mohan said that police had video and audio recordings as evidence against the journalist demanding money from Jindal Group.

Both journalists are accused of demanding Rs.100 crore from Jindal Group in the form of advertisments to the channel in exchange for not filing news reports linking his firm to the coal blocks allocation.

Jindal last month released a CD which purportedly showed footage in which the Zee journalists were trying to strike a deal with his company officials, telling them that their TV news channel would not air negative stories on Jindal Group if the money was paid to them.

Jindal, who is chairman of JPSL, had earlier claimed that the Zee executives had demanded Rs.20 crore for four years and they secretly filmed the meetings. They later raised the demand to Rs.100 crore for not broadcasting stories against the company in relation to the allocation of coal blocks, Jindal alleged.

JPSL is among the companies named in the Comptroller and Auditor General's report as one of the beneficiaries of the controversial coal blocks allocation.

Zee News last month sent a Rs.150 crore defamation notice to the Congress MP, who too had filed a Rs.200 crore suit against the media conglomerate, claiming that the TV channel had tried to extort money from his company.

However, Zee News chief executive officer Alok Agarwal at a press conference defended its journalists saying, "Our executives' arrest is illegal. We strongly condemn arrests of our two executives."

Agarwal also alleged that police were being forced to pursue the matter against them and make illegal arrests.

Two Zee News journalists held for extortion

New Delhi, Nov 27 (IANS): Two senior journalists of Zee News were arrested here Tuesday on charges of attempting to extort Rs.100 crore from Congress MP Naveen Jindal's company in exchange for not filing news reports linking his firm to the coal blocks allocation, said police.

Sudhir Chaudhary, head of Zee News, and Samir Ahluwalia, head of Zee Business, were arrested by Crime Branch of Delhi Police following the registration of an extortion case about 45 days ago on a complaint of Jindal's company.

"Sudhir Chaudhary and Samir Ahluwalia were arrested by Crime Branch Tuesday evening under criminal conspiracy and extortion cases," Deputy Commissioner of Police S.B.S. Tyagi told IANS.

The journalists will be presented before the Saket court Wednesday.

Jindal last month released a CD which purportedly showed footage in which the Zee journalists were trying to strike a deal with his company officials, telling them that their TV news channel will not air negative stories on Jindal Group if the money is paid to them.

Chaudhary had rubbished the allegations as "fabrication" and described it as "pressure tactics" to prevent the channel from doing expose stories.

"We have done a series of stories on coal scam based on official papers. This is a retaliation to our relentless campaign against corruption," he had said.

Jindal, who is chairman of Jindal Power and Steel Ltd, (JPSL), had earlier claimed that the Zee executives had demanded Rs.20 crore for four years and they secretly filmed the meetings.

They later raised the demand to Rs.100 crore for not broadcasting stories against the company in relation to allocation of coal blocks, Jindal alleged.

JPSL is among the companies named in the CAG report as one of the beneficiaries of the controversial coal block allocations.

In a retaliatory move, Zee News last month sent a Rs.150 crore defamation notice to the Congress MP, who too had filed a Rs.200 crore case against the media conglomerate, claiming the TV channel had tried to extort money from his company.

Manipur Highway blockade suspended

Imphal, Nov 23 : The public blockade on National Highways 2 and 37 besides other inter-district routes has been suspended temporarily following a talk between the agitating body and a government team today.

Demanding creation of a separate Kuki State, the Kuki State Demand Committee (KSDC) called the blockade on both national and State highways in the Kuki-inhabited areas in Manipur since November 17 evening, forcing the entire 2.5 million population of the State to face artificial scarcity of fuel.

“Given the demand of the Kuki National Organisation (KNO) and the United People’s Front (UPF) for a political dialogue, the Union Home Ministry was apprised of the matter and the Union Home Ministry has responded positively to depute an official team after the Winter Session of Parliament to Imphal.

In the meantime, the KSDC has been requested to call off the blockade on national highways and maintain peace,” said a government communique which was made available to the media today.

Two North East girls harrassed in Delhi

The accused forcibly knocked the victim's door for one-and-a-half month

New Delhi, Nov 21, 2012 -- Two North East girls have been continuously harassed by a 25-year-old man here  in Munirka early this morning. Both the victims and the accused stayed in same building, H/No. 205-F, First Floor, Munirka. The accused, Arvind Pandey, a warehouse manager in Kapashera, has forcibly knocked the victims' door and demanded to open the door early this morning at 1.15am.

According to the information reaching to North East Support Centre and Helpline, the accused harassed the two young North East girls for the past one and a half month. The accused used to keep flowers, letters and chocolates inside the victims' room (through a small space under the door). The victim also informed the NESC Helpline that the accused used to bolt their door from outside and many times they sought help to open the door from domestic workers of their houseowner.

"This morning Arvind Pandey came again and knocked our doors at 1.15 am. I was so scared that I did not open the door. I requested him not to repeat again and stop harassing me every night, but he never listened to me at all. I warned him that I will call the police, even then he insisted me to call them. I was helpless so much so that I informed our landlord, instead of helping me, I was being told to vacate the room. So I call up the police and informed the matter," told one of the victims to NESC Helpline.

The North East Support Centre and Helpline (NESCH) fact finding team led by founding member Dr Alana Golmei visited the victims at their residence in Munirka this morning at 9am.

In one of the letters written by Arvind Pandey, says: "Can we have talk on phone" with a written phone number "9582151453".
"Some time when I rang up this number, it was switched off. One day I got the line and he said he was not," one of the victims told NESC Helpline fact finding team today.

With the help of North East Support Centre and Helpline, the victims lodged a complaint in Vasant Visant Police Station today. The accused, Arvind Pandey (25) S/o Raghunath Pandey of Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh was arrested by the police. The police registered a case against the accused under section (u/s) 107/151 of CRPC [DD No. 13A, dated 21-11-2012]. The victims demanded preventive action should be taken by the police.

Both the victims were from Manipur, an aspiring air hostess, who came to Delhi to fulfill their dreams. They underwent three-month training course in air hostess. Now both are waiting their interview results, expecting to get job in airline industry.

"It is very sad that our girls are becoming soft targets in the city. They are simply harassed and the landlords often ignored their plights at any crucial moment. The Police must also take action against the landlord," Dr. Alana Golmei expressed.

Dr Golmei appeals to the concern authority to give full security and protection to the Northeast community especially the young girls who have come here to pursue their careers. This kind of harassment discourages and disturbs our girls in achieving their dreams.

The North East Support Centre and Helpline expressed their heartfelt gratitude to Shri Anil Sharma, Station House Officer (SHO), Vasant Vihar Police Station for taking up the matter seriously and arresting the culprit immediately.

Report: Khalvontawi Meet 2012

New Delhi, Nov 14, 2012: The Thangkhals in the national capital celebrated their annual social gathering today here in JNU. The 8th Khalvontawi Meet was held throughout the evening with ‘Righteousness exalts a nation’ as a theme. Around 300 people attended the meet. It was a fascinating moment where different people from different communities gathered at a same place. The big SSS-I Auditorium hall was fully packed, it looks like a swanky hall. This gathering is a sort of brotherhood, unity and peace. The function has a variety of items – singing, dance, speech, messages, and lots of entertainment stuff.

The word KHALVONTAWI literally means Chidlren (sons/daugthers) of Thangkhal. However, the word THANGKHAL is less heard in Manipur. Thangkhal, according to them, is a village name in Chin hills, from where they came.

In the due course of time, this little-known community came to be known as THANGKHAL. Their dialect is similar with Paite, Tedim and Zou dialect. It is unique in the sense that the Thangkhals are a composite of different people belonging to different clans; almost all the clans of CHIN-KUKI-MIZO-ZOMI are found in this group. They have all the clans!

The Thangkhals are peace loving people, though their forefathers were head-hunters and sharp-shooters. As it was, today, the young generation --- the so called --- KHALVONTAWIS are so warmth in welcoming any outsiders into their fold. Thus this reflects back their forefather’s nature.

Important persons who attended this annual meet  were – ‘KHALPIPA’ Rev Khaikhanthang (the 1st Evangelist among the Thangkhals), Rev Dr Langkhanthang Lianzaw (1st Doctorate degree among the Thangkhals), Rev Jangkholun Mangte (a well-known leader among the Thangkhals), Rev Kamsuanlal (TSP founder & former Zomi Fins’ singer) and Upa Kamsuan (founder of Laina Gospel Team, a team which seeks heaven’s blessing for the Thangkhals).

The 8th Khalvontawi Meet ended peacefully with a grand dinner called ‘Itna annkuang.’ Everyone enjoyed the sumptuous meal. It was when we all have to say GOODBYE.

The 8th Khalvontawi Meet 2012

ALL ARE WELCOME

The KHALVONTAWIS [Thangkhal descendants] in Delhi will be celebrating their annual gathering, the KHALVONTAWI MEET, with the theme "Righteousness Exalts a Nation" on 14th November 2012 at SSS-I Auditorium, JNU, from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM. Everyone is invited to join the celebration. A traditional dinner will be served on this occasion, according to the organizers.

On the event banner, you will see a mighty river—the giant force that submerged numerous Thangkhal villages and paddy fields, leaving them buried beneath its waters. Once self-sufficient, the villagers now struggle to sustain their livelihoods, caught between this unwanted river and their ancestral lands. Thanks to Khuga Dam for bringing the 'omen'!

Amidst this reality, righteousness remains absent in the so-called Christian heartland, Lamka, where thousands live in misery. The message from the banner is clear: to rebuild our nation, we need this small 'r'—righteousness.
