Tengnoupal: The Epicentre of Anglo-Kuki War 1917-1919

PU CHOMSHO MATE
THE COMMANDING OFFICER
ANGLO-KUKI-WAR 1917-1919

Tengnoupal (Meitei pronunciation:/teŋ-nə́u-pəl/[b][1]) is a hill town at the highest point of a road (NH-2) between Imphal and Moreh at the end of northwestern Myanmar; the ASEAN Highway passes through the village. It is the district headquarters of the recently reinstated Tengnoupal District and the administrative headquarters of yet to be formed Tengnoupal Autonomous District Council. The climate is cold all throughout the year and remains foggy during the rainy season. The village was founded by Pu Houlim Loikhom Mate and it is the largest village of the Kuki people in the district. The village due to its strategic location has seen many battles in the course of history including World War.

HISTORY
The name Tengnoupal is derived from cactus fencing (teng = cactus and pal = fence). 'Tengnou' means 'tender cactus'.

It was named after the Awa Laan (Manipur-Burmese War) in the 16th century as cactus was planted as a fencing in Tengnoupal Hill range. The then Tengnoupal villagers and surrounding villages fought against the Burmese who came to invade the Meitei kingdom of the Imphal Valley; whilst many young warriors of Tengnoupal were killed and taken as hostage to Burma.

In the 19th century, Tengnoupal was the epicentre of Anglo-Kuki War wherein more than 30 personnel of the British force were annihilated under the command of Pu Chomsho Mate, the younger brother of Pu Loikhom Mate, Chief of Tengnoupal. After that incident, the British Army captured Tengnoupal.

Hence then, Tengnoupal became the Army and Administrative HQ of the then British Government.

During World War II the people of Tengnoupal supported the Indian National Army (INA) led by SubhashChandra Bose. The INA and the Japanese Army even brought in tanks and other heavy war equipments with the help of the local people led by Pu Sholim Mate and they were about to capture the Imphal Valley. Knowing the advancement of the INA and the Japanese Army, after occupying strategic locations at Tengnoupal the British Royal Air Force (RAF) bombarded the whole hill rages of Tengnoupal where many INA, Japanese and local volunteers were killed.

After India became independent in 1945, Tengnoupal remained the administrative HQ and District HQ until the 1970s, when it was shifted to Chandel in 1974.

KLA-L Calls for Unity and Fresh Leadership to Achieve Separate Administration

Office of the
KUKI LIBERATION ARMY-LETKHOLUN (KLA-L)
Government of Kukiland

17th October 2025
PRESS RELEASE

The formation of the new Manipur government necessitates a collective resolve to stand firm on the principle of Separate Administration. Any participation in this process without a unified stance would not only undermine our struggle but also invite repercussions from Non-SoO groups, most notably, the KLA-L and the UKNA. It is crucial that we prioritize the greater good over personal interests and present a united front to achieve our objective.

A fragmented approach would play into the hands of the Central government, allowing them to exploit our divisions and undermine our collective efforts. We must learn from past experiences and recognize that a cohesive stance is essential to negotiating from a position of strength. By standing together, we can ensure that the sacrifices of our kin are not rendered futile and that our struggle remains focused on the ultimate goal of Separate Administration.

In this critical juncture, it may be opportune for leaders from across CSOs and non-CSOs spectrum to reassess their roles and consider yielding to fresh perspectives. Leaders above 65 years of age may consider stepping aside, enabling new leadership to bring renewed energy and innovative thinking to our struggle. By embracing change and working collectively, we can strengthen our pursuit of Separate Administration and bring us closer to our goal.

Khuado Pawi Thu— The Zomi New Year Festival

ENGLISH VERSION & ZOKAM VERSION

ENGLISH VERSION
To celebrate Khuado Pawi, the Zomi New Year, all schools are closed. The Khuado festival is Zomi New Year festival. The first day of the festival is called "A Pi Ni"—meaning Main Day. The second day is called "A Khekleh Ni", which means the day after the main day. The host place where Khuado is observed is called a "Sawm"—it is both the location of the celebration and the place where people stay overnight. Each Lawm (group or unit of celebrants) usually consists of at least two households, but it can include many more.

Before Khuado begins, the young people of the Sawm go bee hunting. They look for various kinds of bees—such as Tunpi or Ngaltun (honeybees).

On the first day of Khuado, the group retrieves the beehives they have found. While collecting the hives, they follow a rope called "Khuai Khau", literally meaning Bee Rope. This rope has knots spaced about a yard apart, with each person holding one knot. Every participant also carries a torch in hand.

Starting from the edge of the village (Khuamual), everyone plays flutes and marches together toward the Sawm. As they approach the host's house, the group begins to dance joyfully.

When they arrive near the Sawm, the host's women greet them with a cup of Zozu (traditional Zo alcohol). At the Sawm, everyone enjoys the night—drinking Zozu, dancing, singing, and celebrating until dawn.

On A Pi Ni, the main day, a pig is butchered for the feast. Typically, two host households share in preparing and cooking the pig. Each host does their best to brew the finest Zozu for their guests.

Some Zozu is stored in standing clay pots, while some is poured into cups and offered playfully among friends, along with pork meat. The air is filled with the sound of gongs, drums, and mithun horns, adding rhythm and energy to the festival. Because Khuado Pawi is such a joyful and lively celebration, everyone looks forward eagerly to the next New Year. Soon after Khuado ends, schools reopen, and normal life resumes.

Thonglunthang: A True Son of the Zomi Nation

In Loving Memory of Thonglunthang Simte (Armstrong Thangshing): A True Son of the Zomi Nation

With deep sorrow and heavy hearts, we mourn the untimely passing of Thonglunthang Simte, fondly known as Armstrong Thangshing, Vice President of the Zomi Students Federation (ZSF). His sudden departure last night has left a void that words cannot fill.

Armstrong was not just a student leader, he was a true son of the Zomi nation, a voice of courage, and a guiding light for the younger generation. His unwavering dedication, his unshakable belief in the Zomi cause, and his tireless service for the upliftment and unity of his people will forever remain etched in our hearts.

His name shall be remembered with pride and gratitude, a symbol of commitment, faith, and love for the land and the people he served so selflessly.

*Our heartfelt* prayers go out to his grieving family, relatives, and friends. May God grant them comfort, strength, and peace in this time of deep sorrow. May the Lord receive his soul with open arms and reward him for the noble work he has done for his people.

Rest in eternal peace, dear Armstrong.
Your service to the Zomi nation will never be forgotten.

Clarification on Munirka Murder Case: Culprit Identified as Meitei, Not Pangal

📍New Delhi, Oct 14: Following the tragic murder of a young tribal woman in Munirka, Delhi, misinformation had circulated online claiming that the accused was a Pangal (Manipuri-Pangal) man. However, official verification and credible reports have confirmed that this information is factually incorrect.

The accused has been identified as Thangjam Viney Meitei, a resident belonging to the Meitei community, not Pangal as previously alleged.

The victim, Vincy Nengneithem Khongsai, reportedly from the Kuki community, was found dead at her rented accommodation in Munirka, Delhi on the night of October 12. Preliminary investigations indicate that she was allegedly killed by her boyfriend, who hails from the Meitei community.

According to police sources, the couple had a dispute, and on the evening of the incident, between 9:30 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. a heated argument escalated into violence. The accused allegedly attacked Vincy with a knife, inflicting fatal injuries to her neck.

As per statements from the victim's family, the accused made a video call to Vincy's father, forcing him to witness the horrifying act. During the call, Vincy was reportedly seen crying and pleading for help. Moments before her death, she was heard saying, "I will be with God when I die," followed by "Amen." The family shared this heartbreaking detail during her funeral service in Munirka.

Following the attack, the accused allegedly attempted suicide. He was found critically injured after the house owner alerted police. Responding officers recovered the victim's body and rescued the accused, who was rushed to the hospital and remains in critical condition in the ICU.

Vincy's body is currently kept at the mortuary for post-mortem examination, while police continue their investigation into the case.

The incident has sent shockwaves through the Kuki community, reopening emotional wounds from the ongoing Manipur conflict that began in May 2023. Community leaders have expressed deep sorrow and outrage, noting that such acts of violence further strain the fragile relations between the Kuki and Meitei communities.

Authorities have urged the public to refrain from spreading unverified information, emphasizing that false claims about the identity of the accused can deepen existing communal divides. The Delhi Police have launched a full investigation to determine the sequence of events and the motive behind this horrific crime.
