Govt of Manipur: Roadmap to Resettle Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs)

Imphal, 29th January, 2026

Roadmap to Resettle Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs)

The Government of Manipur, from time to time, has been apprising the people of Manipur regarding the progress of resettlement of IDPs in the State. As stated in earlier communications, a State Level Committee under the Chairmanship of Chief Secretary, Government of Manipur and with Commissioner – Home Department, Director General of Police, and other senior officials of the Government as members, has been formed to monitor the rehabilitation process in the State. Similarly, District level committees are formed under the District Magistrates. These committees are meeting regularly and conducting rigorous reviews of the rehabilitation process.

  1. The primary aim of the Government is to gradually and securely rehabilitate IDPs, restore stable living conditions, and enable resumption of livelihoods, education and normal community life. The Government's vision extends beyond mere relocation of IDPs from camps to their homes, rather a holistic transition out of Relief Camps with focus on livelihood, education and overall wellness of the IDPs.

  2. By December 2025, more than 2,200 families consisting of about 10,000 IDPs had been resettled. To further this momentum, approximately 7,000 houses have been sanctioned under the Special PMAY-G (Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Gramin) for the reconstruction of fully damaged houses and these units are currently in various stages of completion.

  3. The Government has so far released about ₹ 124.00 Crore for the resettlement of IDPs at various locations. As on today, 2026 about 3,700 families consisting of about 16,500 IDPs have been successfully resettled.

  4. The Government aims to resettle more than 10,000 displaced IDP families consisting of more than 40,000 IDPs by 31st March, 2026.

  5. The Government remains committed to ensure timely and safe rehabilitation of all displaced persons at the earliest.

Fire and Water Can't Be Put Together, Kuki and Meitei Can't Coexist

Fire and Water Can't Be Put Together, Kuki and Meitei Can't Coexist: Separate Administration is the Only Solution

By: Sasang Haokip

The irreconcilable differences between the Meitei and Kuki communities have arguably rendered coexistence untenable. The persistent animosity and distrust have escalated to a critical juncture, necessitating a pragmatic solution. The only viable approach is to establish separate administrations, recognizing the distinct identities and boundaries of each community.

The prolonged separation between these groups since 2023 has exacerbated tensions, underscoring the need for a decisive intervention. Declaring a separate state or union territory for the Kuki community would acknowledge their unique challenges and provide a framework for protecting their rights.

The Modi government must seize this opportunity to address the festering issue, prioritizing peace and stability over temporary fixes. It's time for bold action: recognize Meitei areas as Meitei land and Kuki areas as Kuki land, and establish separate administrations respecting their unique histories, identities, and boundaries.

Rocket Attack Targets Myanmar Army Chief in Mandalay

Myanmar military chief Min Aung Hlaing was targeted in a rocket attack on January 27 while travelling to the Central Command (Lah Pah Kah). The group Brave Warriors for Myanmar (BWM) claimed responsibility, saying they fired five 107mm rockets under Mission 50.

According to the group, the attack was carried out with allied forces, including No More Dictatorship (NMD-PDF), Shadow (Mandalay), and Infinity, at around 4:30 am. The attack reportedly took place as Min Aung Hlaing was returning from a visit to a mock election site in Mandalay.

Three rockets are said to have hit the command area, possibly striking the commander's residence. Authorities are currently investigating the incident. Earlier, on December 28, 2025, BWM Mission 49 had carried out another attack that reportedly killed at least two soldiers.

134th Chin–Lushai Conference Emphasises Unity of Zo Kindred Communities

Lawngtlai, January 29, 2026: The 134th Chin–Lushai Conference, organised by the Zo Re-unification Organisation (ZORO), was held with significance and renewed commitment to unity on Wednesday at the Lal Thanhawla Auditorium in Lawngtlai.

The conference was graced by Mizoram Legislative Assembly Speaker Lalbiakzama as the chief guest. Addressing the gathering, the Speaker highlighted ZORO's long-standing efforts, since 1988, to bring the Chin kindred communities together under a common identity. He described the organisation's role in promoting unity among the Zo people as both meaningful and timely.

Recalling recent milestones, Lalbiakzama mentioned the launch of the Zo Indigenous Identity Card on December 24, 2024, an initiative led by ZORO, and encouraged the people to continue the movement with dedication and perseverance.
Referring to history, the Speaker noted that attempts made during the 1892 Chin–Lushai Conference to unite the Chin communities under a single administration had failed, resulting in the people being divided later by international boundaries. These divisions, he said, led to differences in territories and languages, but never broke the shared ancestry, blood ties, and brotherhood of the Zo people. He urged the community to remain united wherever they reside.

The theme of the 134th Chin–Lushai Conference was "Unity", reflecting the organisation's core objective.

The morning session was presided over by ZORO President R. Sangkawia while ZORO Vice President L. Ramdinliana Renthlei presented a report highlighting the organisation's activities and achievements. The afternoon session featured cultural programmes, during which Lalmuanpuia Punte, MLA and Adviser to the Chief Minister delivered the inaugural address.

The conference concluded with a renewed call for solidarity, cultural preservation, and collective effort towards strengthening unity among the Zo kindred communities.
