KWOHR condemns Mulam attack, seeks justice, security

The Kuki Women Organisation for Human Rights (KWOHR) has strongly condemned an alleged brutal and unprovoked armed attack on the Kuki-inhabited villages of Mulam and Songphai in the early hours of April 24, 2026. In its press release, the organisation stated that the attack occurred at approximately 5:30 AM, following reports of blank gunfire around 1:00 AM—an apparent tactic to instil fear and confusion among villagers.

According to KWOHR, heavily armed militants carried out a coordinated and premeditated assault, descending upon the villages and causing widespread damage. At least 15 houses were reportedly damaged, six civilians sustained injuries due to indiscriminate firing, and two innocent lives were lost in the attack. The organisation noted that such repeated incidents, including reported gunfire directed towards nearby villages like Leplen, have contributed to an atmosphere of fear and insecurity among vulnerable communities.

KWOHR described the attack as an inhumane, cowardly, and unlawful act, emphasising that violence against unarmed civilians constitutes a grave violation of human rights and cannot be tolerated under any circumstances. The organisation has called for immediate registration of an FIR and a transparent, time-bound investigation into the incident. It also demanded swift identification, arrest, and prosecution of all those responsible.

Further, KWOHR urged the urgent deployment of adequate security forces to protect vulnerable villages and prevent further attacks. It called for immediate medical assistance and adequate compensation for the injured, as well as justice and support for the families of those who lost their lives. The organisation also stressed the need for restoration, reconstruction, and rehabilitation support for all affected households.

Reaffirming its solidarity with the victims, KWOHR urged the government and concerned authorities to take immediate and decisive action to restore peace, ensure justice, and uphold the rule of law in the region.

KOHUR condemns deadly Mullam-Songphai attack, seeks action

The Kuki Organization for Human Rights Trust (KOHUR) has strongly and unequivocally condemned an alleged unprovoked armed attack on the Kuki villages of Mullam and Songphai in Ukhrul district in the early hours of April 24, 2026, at around 5:30 AM. According to the statement, suspected armed Tangkhul militants targeted the villages while residents were asleep, setting at least two houses on fire, injuring several innocent civilians—including women and children—and killing two Kuki village volunteers who were on duty protecting their community.

KOHUR stated that villagers exercised their lawful right to self-defence using licensed arms and managed to repel the attackers, neutralising one of the assailants in the process. The organisation described the incident as part of a disturbing and continuing pattern of aggression against indigenous Kuki-Zo communities, calling it a grave violation of the right to life, peaceful habitation, and fundamental human rights guaranteed under the Constitution of India and international law.

The organisation has demanded immediate registration of an FIR and a transparent, time-bound investigation by competent authorities. It further called for swift identification, arrest, and prosecution of all perpetrators, conspirators, and financiers involved under relevant criminal and anti-terror laws. KOHUR also urged the urgent deployment of adequate central armed police forces in Mullam, Songphai, and other vulnerable villages along the Kuki-Naga periphery to prevent further attacks.

Additionally, KOHUR demanded immediate medical treatment and ex-gratia compensation for injured civilians, along with proper recognition and compensation for the families of the two slain village volunteers. It also called for full reconstruction and restitution of homes destroyed in the arson attack, as well as rehabilitation support for displaced families.

Expressing solidarity with the victims, KOHUR urged the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Ministry of Home Affairs, and other national and international human rights bodies, civil society, and the media to take urgent cognisance of the incident. The organisation stressed that silence in the face of such repeated violence is unacceptable and called for swift, visible, and uncompromising justice.

KNO rejects KNA-B video claims, warns against misinformation

The Kuki National Organisation (KNO), under the Government of Kuki State, has issued a clarification regarding a viral video circulating on social media that allegedly shows blindfolded youths being identified as members of the Kuki National Army-Burma (KNA-B) involved in attacks on civilians. In its statement dated April 24, 2026, the organisation categorically denied the claims, calling them baseless, false, and part of a deliberate misinformation campaign.

According to the clarification, the video also purportedly shows the killing of alleged KNA-B soldiers, which the organisation stated is fabricated. KNO criticised what it described as attempts by certain elements to spread propaganda and misinformation in order to incite hostility and gain support against the Kuki community, particularly amid ongoing tensions.

The organisation asserted that KNA-B has no operational presence within India, as its focus remains in Burma (Myanmar). It further pointed out inconsistencies in the video, noting that KNA-B cadres do not wear the type of uniforms shown and that their official insignias are worn on both shoulders, unlike what appears in the footage. Additionally, it highlighted that the Burmese language heard in the video suggests those involved are not affiliated with KNA-B, as the group does not include Si-Aso members.

KNO also urged restraint among communities and criticised the spread of misinformation, warning that such actions could further inflame tensions. It stated that the group has consistently encouraged peaceful coexistence between Kuki and Tangkhul communities, including in Burma, and called on all sides to avoid escalating the situation.

The organisation warned that if the spread of such misinformation continues, it would not remain a mere spectator, signalling concern over the potential impact on communal harmony and regional stability.

KSO CCPUR: PRESS STATEMENT

The ongoing Kuki–Meitei conflict since 3rd May 2023 remains a grave humanitarian and constitutional crisis. The Kuki-Zo community has lost over 200 lives, witnessed the destruction of hundreds of villages, and continues to endure large-scale displacement. Despite the magnitude of the violence, justice and accountability remain elusive.

We express deep anguish over the demise of Pu Vungzagin Valte, Hon’ble MLA, who succumbed to prolonged injuries sustained following a brutal attack by Meitei extremist mobs. An assault on a sitting legislator is an affront to democratic institutions and the rule of law. We demand a time-bound, impartial investigation and the swift prosecution of all those responsible, both in this case and in all other incidents of violence.

The demand of the Kuki-Zo people for Separate Administration in the form of a Union Territory with Legislature is rooted in the constitutional obligation of the State to ensure security, equality, and effective governance. The continued failure to protect life and property has made a political solution both urgent and necessary. In his final appeal to the Hon’ble Prime Minister, Late Pu Vungzagin Valte reiterated this demand and called for the expediting of political dialogue with KNO and UPF.

In solidarity with the appeal made by Zomi civil society organisations, and to reiterate our demand for a political solution for the Kuki-Zo people, the Kuki civil society organisations of Churachandpur—KIC, KCA, KKL, KWU, KWOHR, and KSO—extend full support to the shutdown in honour of (Late) Pu Vungzagin Valte and all martyrs.

We call upon the Government of India to deliver justice, ensure accountability, and urgently initiate a political process towards granting Union Territory status with Legislature. We urge all citizens to observe the shutdown in a peaceful and lawful manner.

Lamka Shutdown Ends Peacefully; Zomi Bodies Renew Call for Justice

In the aftermath of the death of Late Pu Vungzagin Valte, Hon’ble BJP MLA of 56-Thanlon Assembly Constituency, following the grievous injuries he sustained, the continued absence of truth and justice has deepened public anguish and dissatisfaction. In response, various Zomi frontal organisations called for a Total Shutdown on April 22, 2026, from 5:00 AM to 6:00 PM. The shutdown concluded peacefully at 6:00 PM, and all volunteers deployed for the observance have now been relieved of duty.

We extend our sincere gratitude to all sections of the public who respectfully supported and strictly observed the Total Shutdown. We also convey our appreciation to the Kuki Students’ Organisation, Hmar Students’ Association, Hmar Village Volunteers, and all organisations within our fold for their participation and solidarity.

We further commend the local defence committees, organisations, and volunteers across villages and localities who ensured the effective and orderly conduct of the shutdown.

As the need for stronger and more decisive collective action may arise in the days ahead, we urge the public to remain prepared and continue to stand united, just as we have done today.

Since the demand for justice in connection with Pu Gin’s death remains unmet, there is a resolve to intensify our course of action if necessary. We once again appeal to the public to remain vigilant and ready to respond accordingly.

Hin-Chi: Seeds of Life for a Drug-Free Future

LAMKA, APRIL 21, 2026: Churachandpur District Police, in partnership with the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), has launched a community-driven initiative titled ‘Hin-Chi’—meaning Seeds of Life, symbolising hope and new beginnings.

As part of this initiative, three sensitive regions within the district—identified as vulnerable to illicit poppy cultivation—were strategically targeted. Through sustained engagement, all village chiefs and 127 beneficiary households were taken into confidence and encouraged to transition towards sustainable and lawful livelihood options through alternative cash crops.

Under Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), the project received a generous funding support of ₹28,00,000 from Chennai-based technology firm Segula Technologies.

With this support, the District Police facilitated the distribution of approximately:

55,000 kg of ginger seeds

450 kg of pea seeds

6,500 banana saplings

to all identified beneficiaries.

Going forward, joint teams comprising District Police, NCB, and local NGO NARPS will undertake active and periodic monitoring. This will ensure accountability, provide continuous guidance, and support farmers in post-harvest management and market linkages.

Hin-Chi stands as a testament to collective resolve—transforming risk into resilience, and paving the way for a safer, self-reliant future.

Kuki-Zo Council Denies Role in Ukhrul Killing Incident

Lamka, April 18, 2026: The Kuki-Zo Council (KZC) has issued a clarification strongly denying any involvement of Kuki-Zo individuals or groups in the recent killing incident reported at TM Kasom village in Ukhrul district.

In an official statement released on Saturday, the Council expressed deep concern over certain media reports that allegedly linked Kuki militants to the incident. The KZC stated that such claims are “categorically and unequivocally” false and lack proper verification or credible evidence.

According to the Council, ground-level understanding suggests that the incident may be related to ongoing tensions among certain factional groups, rather than the involvement of any Kuki-Zo community members. It termed the situation “deeply regrettable,” especially as blame was hastily attributed without confirmation.

The Council further noted that such allegations have become a recurring pattern whenever incidents occur in Manipur involving other communities, including Meitei and Naga groups. It warned that this trend not only distorts facts but also unfairly portrays the Kuki-Zo community in a negative light.

Appealing for responsible reporting, the KZC urged media houses, social media users, civil society organizations, and authorities to verify facts before making or publishing accusations against any community.

Reiterating its stance, the Council emphasized that the Kuki-Zo people have no role in the incident and called on all concerned to refrain from spreading misinformation.

Kuki-Zo Council Warns Against Security Changes in Hills

Lamka, April 16, 2026: The Kuki-Zo Council (KZC) has expressed deep concern over a recent statement made by Manipur State Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam regarding the proposed replacement of Central security forces with State forces in the hill areas.

In a press release issued on Friday, the Council said that since the outbreak of violence on May 3, 2023, there have been several instances where State forces were either complicit in attacks against the Kuki-Zo community or failed to act in preventing violence. It also highlighted that the inability of State forces to stop the large-scale looting of arms—later used against the community—has significantly eroded public trust and confidence.

The Council noted that, in contrast, Central security forces have played a crucial and stabilizing role in Manipur. Their deployment in buffer zones between Kuki-Zo and Meitei areas has helped prevent many potential escalations, it stated.

Warning against any changes, the KZC said that withdrawing or replacing Central forces from the hills or buffer zones could undo the hard-earned stability and may trigger renewed violence. Such a move, it cautioned, would be detrimental to all communities in the state.

The Council strongly urged the state authorities to refrain from altering the current security arrangements, emphasizing that the continued presence of Central forces is essential to ensure neutrality, restore public confidence, and safeguard peace for all.

Muolvaiphei Murder Case: Suspect Arrested in Lamka

Lamka, April 15, 2026: District Police have arrested a suspected accused in connection with a murder case reported at Muolvaiphei village earlier this week.

The case, registered as FIR No. 04(04)2026 at Women Police Station (WPS) Churachandpur under Section 103 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, relates to an incident that occurred on April 13.

The victim has been identified as Mrs. Tinneilhing Baite of B. Goshen Veng.

The arrested individual has been identified as Letkhothang (53), a resident of M. Saheiphai village under Saikot, currently residing at S. Kanaan Veng in Churachandpur district. He was taken into custody on April 14.

According to police, follow-up investigation revealed that the accused is the elder brother of the victim’s late husband, indicating a familial connection to the case.

Further investigation is currently underway to determine the motive and other circumstances surrounding the incident.

Two suspects held during checking in Lamka

Lamka, April 15: A combined team of security forces apprehended two suspected individuals during a frisking and checking operation conducted near Vishal Shopping Mall in Rengkai on Tuesday evening.

The operation, carried out around 4:00 pm, involved District Police led by SDPO Churachandpur Shri Jay Barange, IPS, along with one platoon of 129 Battalion CRPF and a column of the 37th Assam Rifles.

During the checking drive, a white Maruti Suzuki Swift bearing registration number AS01EZ3943 was intercepted. Upon frisking the vehicle, two occupants were detained on suspicion of involvement in a criminal case.

The individuals have been identified as Ngamkhomang Haokip (36) of S. Moldung and Letminthang Haokip (38) of Lhangnom village, both from Churachandpur district. They are suspected to be linked to FIR No. 29(03)2026 registered at Churachandpur Police Station under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Arms Act.

The apprehended persons, along with the vehicle and mobile phones recovered from them, have been taken to Churachandpur Police Station for further investigation. Authorities are continuing inquiries to establish their role in the case.

Manipur appoints M Joy Singh as State Election Commissioner

Imphal, April 15, 2026: The Government of Manipur has appointed Shri M. Joy Singh, IAS (Retd.), as the State Election Commissioner of Manipur. The appointment was made through an official order issued by the Secretariat: Law & Legislative Affairs Department.

According to the order (No. Com-3/2/2026-SEC-LAW), the appointment has been made under the powers conferred by Article 243K of the Constitution of India, read with Rules 3 and 6 of the Election Commissioner of Manipur (Conditions of Service) Rules, 1994.

Shri M. Joy Singh will serve as the State Election Commissioner until he attains the age of 62 years, which will be on December 31, 2026.

The order further states that details regarding his pay will be issued separately, while other conditions of service will be governed by the Election Commissioner of Manipur (Conditions of Service) Rules, 1994.

The order was issued by Namoijam Kheda Varta Singh, Secretary (Law), Government of Manipur, in the name of the Governor.

Her lifeless body was discovered at Muolvaiphei on 13th April 2026 at approximately 11:00 AM—an appalling act of brutality carried out in broad daylight, exposing the alarming collapse of safety in our society.

This monstrous crime is not merely the loss of an innocent life; it is a grave assault on humanity, womanhood, dignity, and the very foundation of justice and law. Such acts of violence against women are intolerable and reflect a deeply disturbing rise in lawlessness and impunity that demands immediate and uncompromising action.
KWOHR calls upon the concerned authorities to treat this case with the utmost urgency and seriousness. We demand a swift, transparent, and thorough investigation, and the immediate identification, arrest, and prosecution of the perpetrator(s). There must be no delay, no negligence, and no excuse—justice must be delivered without fail and without delay.

We stand in solidarity with the bereaved family during this painful and difficult time, sharing in their grief and loss, and extending our deepest condolences.
We further urge the public, civil society organizations, and all justice-loving individuals to stand united in condemning this atrocity. Silence is complicity. Let us raise our voices collectively to demand justice for Mrs. Tinneilhing Baite and to ensure that such horrific crimes are neither ignored nor repeated.

Unidentified woman’s body found in Churachandpur area

Lamka, April 13, 2026: An unidentified female dead body was discovered on the outskirts of Muolvaiphei village under Saikot Sub-Division in Churachandpur district, Manipur, late Monday night.

According to official sources, the information was received at around 11:30 PM from the Secretary of Muolvaiphei Village Authority. A police team immediately rushed to the spot, conducted an inquest, and completed all necessary legal formalities.

In connection with the incident, a case has been registered vide FIR No. 04(04)2026 WPS CCP under Section 103 of the BNS, 2023. The District Magistrate, Churachandpur, has been informed to depute an Executive Magistrate for the inquest proceedings.

The body has been deposited at the District Hospital Morgue, Churachandpur, for further necessary procedures, while investigation is underway to ascertain the identity of the deceased.

Worker’s body sent to Assam after postmortem in Imphal

Imphal, April 13, 2026: The postmortem examination, embalming, and coffin certification of the late Mr. Gupal Boro (34), son of Deben Boro of Dhemaji district, Assam, were conducted at RIMS, Imphal, on Monday in connection with FIR No. 3(04)2026 HLP Police Station under relevant sections of the BNS.

The procedures were carried out with the assistance of Lamphel Police Station, following all required legal formalities. After completion of the process, the body was handed over to Mr. Manoj Nath, Camp In-charge of 2A BIPL, Maukot, for the performance of the last rites.

Officials stated that the mortal remains will be transported by road to the deceased’s native place in Assam for final rites.

NPO urges local firms for NH-02 work in Senapati

Senapati, April 13, 2026: The Naga People’s Organisation (NPO), Senapati, has urged authorities to allow only local contractors to undertake the ongoing road development work along the Mao–Senapati stretch of National Highway-02 in Manipur.

In a press release issued on Tuesday, the apex civil society body highlighted the engagement of the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) in strengthening and upgrading the stretch from Mao Gate to Taphou Kuki, covering a total length of 51.985 km under EPC mode.

The NPO stated that its demand is based on past experiences where outside contractors allegedly compromised on quality while focusing on speedy completion of projects. It also pointed out that the local public often faces difficulties in raising complaints when executing agencies are from outside the state.

Further, the organisation made it clear that any bidding at below-minus rates for the project would not be accepted. It warned that any violation of fair bidding practices would be viewed seriously and rejected in the larger interest of the public.

ITLF Reaffirms Buffer Zone, Sets May 3 Separation Day

Lamka, April 12, 2026: The Indigenous Tribal Leaders’ Forum (ITLF) has announced that the buffer zone restrictions in the region will remain in force until a political solution is reached.

In a press release issued on Sunday, the ITLF stated that, as per its Meeting Resolution No. 3 dated February 12, 2026, there will be no crossing of the buffer zone. It further clarified that individuals from the Meitei community are not permitted to enter Churachandpur, and the directive continues to be strictly enforced.

The forum urged all concerned to respect and adhere to the buffer zone guidelines to prevent any untoward incidents and to maintain peace and stability in the area.

Meanwhile, the ITLF also informed that a grand observance will be held on May 3, 2026, to mark Separation Day at the Wall of Remembrance. The event, as per Meeting Resolution No. 2 dated March 3, 2026, will honour the memory of those who lost their lives, acknowledging their sacrifices and inspiring collective resilience among the people.

Calling for unity and solidarity, the ITLF appealed to citizens, friends, and well-wishers to support the event. It stated that every contribution, regardless of size, would help ensure the program is conducted with dignity and respect.

To facilitate the event, the ITLF Women Wing will undertake fundraising activities, and the public has been encouraged to extend support through the provided payment channels.

ZOWA Felicitates Calvin Zou IAS AIR 134

🎓🌟 A grand felicitation programme was organised by the Zou Officers’ Welfare Association (ZOWA) in honour of Calvin Ginminlien Zou, who secured an impressive All India Rank (AIR) 134 in the UPSC Civil Services Examination 2025–26, emerging as one of the best performers from Northeast India 🇮🇳✨.

The programme was held at the ZOWA Office, Zomi Colony, from 9:00 AM to 10:30 AM, under the conductorship of Lawrence K. Munluo, Joint Secretary. The event began with an invocation prayer led by Upa Nangkhanlal, Finance Secretary, followed by a warm welcome address delivered by Pi Mannuamching, Chairperson 🙏.

The felicitation ceremony featured presentation of mementos by ZOWA and individual presentations, recognising the remarkable achievement of the young IAS officer 🎖️. 

In his speech, Calvin Ginminlien Zou shared a heartfelt message, stating that while the community identifies strongly as Christian and community-oriented, there is often a lack of support for others once success is achieved.

“We call ourselves Christians and we have a community-based society, but when we achieve something big, we tend to forget to help others to become successful. This has to stop. I am not criticizing but I want to change this,” he said.

He further revealed that he has started a Telegram platform to guide aspiring candidates on UPSC-CSE preparation, aiming to prevent mistakes he faced due to lack of mentorship 📚💡. 

He emphasized the importance of unity, selflessness, and learning from other communities, particularly citing the Rajasthan tribal Meenas.

Highlighting spiritual values, he added that God must be placed above clans and tribes, quoting Saint Augustine:

“Spread the gospel and if necessary, use works,” stressing that actions should reflect faith and that professions can serve as a ministry ✝️.

He also expressed his vision to build a forum of Christian officers who would lead by example and encourage one another to be witnesses through their lives.

Senior officers of ZOWA shared words of encouragement and advice during the programme 🗣️.

Notable speakers included Pi Mannuamching IAS/DC Pherzawl, Dr. Dongkhanlal, Chairman ZOWA, Associate Professor T. Ginzamang, Lawrence K. Munluo MPS Addl. SP/Churachandpur, Dr. Hegin Tungdim, and others.

The programme also included a discussion and interaction session, followed by a vote of thanks delivered by Pu Ginjamang T. Zomi, Vice-Chairman.
