World Cup 2026 | SF-1: Spain 2 - 0 France

Football matches are rarely won on paper, and Wednesday’s thrilling FIFA World Cup 2026 semi-final at Dallas Stadium proved precisely that. In a masterclass of pure efficiency, Spain secured their spot in the grand final with a clinical 2-0 victory over a frustrated France side.

On the face of it, the statistics tell a completely different story; Les Bleus dominated the attacking metrics with fourteen shots and seven corners compared to Spain's solitary corner. Yet, football is a game decided by what you do with the ball, not how often you look at the goal.

The breakthrough came early in the twenty-second minute when Spain were awarded a penalty, which Mikel Oyarzabal coolly slotted home to break the deadlock.

France, despite fielding a potent 4-2-3-1 formation and launching wave after wave of pressure, simply lacked the final, decisive touch.

Spain comfortably controlled the tempo with 51% possession and 487 completed passes, starving the French attackers of clean service. The knockout blow arrived in the fifty-eighth minute, courtesy of a brilliant strike from Pedro Porro.

Astonishingly, Spain only registered two shots on target during the entire ninety minutes, but their flawless 100% conversion rate proved to be the ultimate difference.

For tactical enthusiasts, this match offers a valuable lesson in defensive resilience and game management. France will undoubtedly regret their missed opportunities, having tested the Spanish keeper four times to no avail. Spain now march on to the New York New Jersey Stadium for Monday’s final, where they await the winner of the highly anticipated Argentina versus England clash.

France, meanwhile, must pick themselves up quickly for the third-place playoff in Miami this Sunday. It is a bitter pill to swallow for the French, but a glorious testament to Spain’s ruthless precision.
