THE political landscape of Northeast India has long been shaped by leaders who
understand both the weight of armed struggle and the responsibility of
constitutional governance. Former Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga stands out
as a striking example of this transition. Emerging from a background as a
dedicated guerrilla fighter with the Mizo National Front during the turbulent
decades of the mid-twentieth century, he later traded the gun for the ballot
box following the landmark 1986 Mizoram Peace Accord. His journey from an
underground rebel leader to a three-time chief minister offers a unique perspective
on ethnic conflict and statehood. Speaking in New Delhi on 1 October 2026, his
intervention regarding the crisis in Manipur carries significant political
weight. He observed that repeated attempts to resolve the conflict have failed
because the wound between the Meiteis and Kuki-Zo is simply too deep, making an
alternative administrative arrangement essential.
At
the heart of the debate is the growing realisation that the deepening divide
between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities requires a fresh political framework
to restore lasting peace. For the Kuki-Zo people, who feel increasingly
vulnerable under the current state government of Manipur, the demand for a
separate Union Territory with a legislature has become a vital call for
protection and political dignity. Organisations like the Kuki NationalOrganisation (KNO), the United People’s Front (UPF), and the Kuki-Zo Council(KZC) continue to stress this need. Without a distinct administrative setup,
there is a realistic fear that their ancestral land and identity will be eroded
over time. From the viewpoint of ethnic solidarity, reaching out to Mizo
neighbours and standing united to demand a Union Territory is seen not as a
desire for conflict, but as a necessary step for community survival and long-term
self-determination.
However,
resolving internal state boundaries is only one part of a much larger,
interconnected puzzle that spans international borders. As Zoramthanga rightly
pointed out, peace in Northeast India remains inextricably tied to the internal
stability of neighbouring Myanmar, where porous borders encourage drug
trafficking and insurgent activity. Addressing the broader security
environment, alongside his willingness to mediate with group leadership like
ULFA-I, underscores the multi-faceted nature of peace in the region. However, stabilizing
the Northeast requires a comprehensive approach that combines pragmatic
cross-border security with empathetic local politics. True peace will only
return to these strategic hills when central authorities acknowledge that
existing frameworks have failed, allowing communities like the Kuki-Zo to
secure an administrative path where their rights, territory, and dignity are
fully protected.
