WHEN the pioneering missionary William Pettigrew first arrived in Manipur on 6 February 1894, he brought with him a vision of hope, education, and spiritual transformation. After initial efforts in Imphal, he shifted his focus to the hills in February 1896, establishing his base at Phungyo in Ukhrul and planting his footsteps deep within the Tangkhul region, before his work reached the Thadou-Kuki and other communities. Through his selfless efforts, schools were established, local dialects were given script, and thousands embraced Christianity, finding in it a path towards brotherhood and light. Yet today, as dark clouds of violent conflict shadow the state, one cannot help but reflect on what this legacy has become. If Pettigrew were alive to witness the ongoing bloodshed and bitter divisions tearing these very communities apart, he would surely weep with a heavy heart. The light of unity he strived so hard to kindle from Phungyo is being smothered by hatred, leaving behind a land scarred by sorrow and broken trust.

True
faith does not call for destruction, nor does it justify the taking of innocent
lives in the name of pride or retaliation. In the Gospel of Matthew, chapter 5:9
(NRSV) offers a timeless reminder: “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will
be called children of God.” These words are not merely a poetic ideal, but an
urgent instruction for everyday life. We must pause and ask ourselves the
difficult, uncomfortable questions that violence always conceals: what do we
truly achieve by holding onto weapons, and what victory can ever be claimed
through the loss of a neighbour’s life? Guns can only destroy homes and shatter
futures; they can never build a stable tomorrow or bring true justice. It is
time for all sides to let down their arms, embrace dialogue, and recognise that
continuing down this destructive path leads only to shared ruin and perpetual
grief.
Rebuilding Manipur requires a courageous shift in how we view those across the divide, moving
away from vengeance towards genuine reconciliation. Scripture instructs us with
equal clarity to love our neighbours and to love our enemies, challenging us to
overcome the instinct for revenge with an overwhelming commitment to grace.
Loving one’s enemy is perhaps the hardest demand placed upon human nature, yet
it remains the only power capable of breaking the endless cycle of violence.
Peace cannot be restored by military force or political rhetoric alone; it must
begin in the human heart through forgiveness and empathy. The path forward
demands that communities choose to see one another not as adversaries, but as
fellow children of the same soil. Only by laying down the instruments of war
and walking together in the spirit of love can Manipur heal its wounds and
rediscover the peace it so desperately deserves.
