New Delhi, Oct 19, 2013: OM Roy Memorial, Shillong, Meghalaya, won the U-17 Boys’ Subroto Cup after defeating Magurmari High School, Kokrajhar, Assam, 4-0 in the final at Dr B. R. Ambedkar Stadium on Saturday. Teams from the Northeast dominated the tournament, winning all titles. Manipur secured the U-17 Girls’ title, while Mizoram won the U-14 Boys’ title in this 54th edition of the prestigious trophy.

The match started with Meghalaya controlling the game, but scoring was not easy in the beginning. Mebanshan Suting and Nongrud Jefferson scored in the 34th and 46th minutes, respectively.

In the second half, Meghalaya completely dominated. They controlled possession, and Kynter Lenningston and Kurbah Michaelson scored in the 61st and 69th minutes. This victory marks the second time since 1978 that a team from Meghalaya has won the U-17 Boys’ title. Meghalaya had lost in the final in 2011. Assam previously won the title in 1986 and 1992, and this was their fifth appearance in the final.

The first half was evenly matched before Suting broke the deadlock with a stunning shot from the top of the box that found the top corner a minute before the break. The goal lifted Meghalaya’s spirits, and they dominated the second half. Nongrud doubled the lead with a diving header from a cross on the left just after the restart. Kynter Leningstar then added the third goal with a powerful long-range shot.

Despite their efforts, Assam could not make a comeback. Their striker, Kapil, forced a fine save from Meghalaya’s goalkeeper, Sten Banshanlal, in the 65th minute with a well-placed shot from outside the box. Kurbah Michaelson sealed Meghalaya’s victory with a header after receiving a cross from Nongrud Jefferson.

Speaking after the final, Meghalaya striker Mebanshan Suting, who was the tournament’s second-highest scorer with seven goals, said, “We did not play very well in the first half, but we managed to find our rhythm in the second half.”

As part of their Generation Adidas Programme, Adidas has taken steps to improve player selection and development in the Subroto Cup. For the first time in the tournament’s history, I-League clubs have shown interest in scouting young talent. Spotters from Shillong Lajong and Pune FC selected 15 boys, who will now go for trials with these clubs.

Haryana - Runners-up of U-17 Girls Subroto Cup. - BKT

These 15 players from U-17 Boys’ champions OM Roy Memorial, Meghalaya, will also take part in the Bayern Youth Cup, a tournament organised by Adidas in association with German club Bayern Munich, to be held in the capital later this year.

The U-17 Girls’ title was won by Radha Madhav Sanskrit Vidyalaya of Bishnupur, Manipur, who defeated Government Senior Secondary School, Alakhpura, Bhiwani, Haryana, 6-4 in a penalty shootout after the match ended 1-1. Manipur reached the final after beating Mizoram 5-1 in the semi-final, IPSC 8-0 in the quarter-final, Goa 7-0 in the third match, Assam 7-0 in the second match, and Delhi 13-0 in the first match.

In the U-14 Boys’ final, Government Chawmfianga Middle School of Kolasib, Mizoram, defeated Betkuchi High School, Kamrup, Assam, 2-1.

Yuwa, a girls’ team from Jharkhand that recently secured third place at the Geisteiz Cup in Spain, played an exhibition match against this year’s girls’ champions, Radha Madhav Sanskrit Vidyalaya of Bishnupur, Manipur. The match ended goalless and was Yuwa’s first match in India.

Every year, over 20,000 schools across the country participate in the qualification stages of the tournament. Organisers select a group of talented young boys for the “Subroto Boys” programme, where they receive scholarships for education and football training. This year’s edition featured 476 players from 31 teams, including two foreign teams. Legendary athlete Padma Shri Milkha Singh attended the closing ceremony as the guest of honour.

The organisers also selected 25 young boys for the “Subroto Boys” group, providing them with scholarships for education and football training.

In the U-17 Boys’ category, Mebanshan Suting (OM Roy High School, Shillong, Meghalaya) was named Best Player, Jeffrey Warlarpih (OM Roy High School, Shillong, Meghalaya) was awarded Best Coach, Sten Banshanlanl (OM Roy High School, Shillong, Meghalaya) was Best Goalkeeper, and Jwngbla Brahma (Magurmari High School, Kokrajhar, Assam) was named Most Promising Player. GV Raja Sports School (Kerala) received the Fair Play Award.

In the U-17 Girls’ category, Sanju (Fountainhead School, Surat, Gujarat) was named Best Player, Fatima Begum (Radha Madhav Sanskrit Vidyalaya, Nambol, Bishnupur, Manipur) was Best Coach, M Linthoingambi (Radha Madhav Sanskrit Vidyalaya, Nambol, Bishnupur, Manipur) was Best Goalkeeper, and Dangmei Grace (Radha Madhav Sanskrit Vidyalaya, Nambol, Bishnupur, Manipur) was named Most Promising Player. Fountainhead School, Surat, Gujarat, received the Fair Play Award.

India hosts 15th Asian Canoe Polo Championship

New Delhi, 19 October 2013: For the first time, India is hosting the 15th Asian Canoe Polo Championship at the Talkatora Swimming Pool, Dr. S.P. Mukherjee Swimming Pool Complex, New Delhi.

A total of six countries, with 150 athletes, are taking part in the championship. The participating nations include Japan, Singapore, Malaysia, Iran, Chinese Taipei, and India. This is India’s first time competing in the championship. The event is held every two years. The previous championship took place in Iran, and the next will be hosted in Hong Kong, according to the organisers.

The championship was inaugurated by Jiji Thomson, Director General of the Sports Authority of India, on 17 October and will continue until 20 October. It is organised under the Indian Kayaking and Canoeing Association (IKCA).

Balbir Singh Kushwaha, National Secretary General of the International Canoe Federation, said, “This is the first time India is participating in an international Canoe Polo championship, and we are happy to see the team compete. I know our team is not scoring very well, but at least we have started.”

Canoe Polo, also known as Kayak Polo, is a fast-paced water sport played in a defined field between two teams of five players each, who compete in kayaks (small boats). The objective is to score goals by getting the ball into the opponent’s net. The team with the most goals at the end of the match wins. Each game consists of two halves, each lasting ten minutes.

In the Senior Men’s category, India lost to Malaysia by 2:34 goals, Iran defeated Singapore 4:3, India lost to Chinese Taipei 0:50, Japan defeated Malaysia 11:3, Iran defeated Chinese Taipei 8:6, India lost to Japan 0:15, Singapore defeated Malaysia 10:3, India lost to Iran 0:9, and Japan defeated Singapore 10:4.

In the Senior Women’s category, India lost to Singapore by 0:39 goals, Iran defeated Japan 7:2, and Iran defeated Singapore 6:0.

In the Under-21 Men’s category, Chinese Taipei lost to Singapore by 3:6, India lost to Japan 2:24, Chinese Taipei defeated India 28:1, and Iran defeated Japan 8:4.

In the 12th Asian Canoe Polo Championship held in Hwacheon, Korea, in 2007, Chinese Taipei was the champion in the Men’s Senior category, while Iran won the Women’s Senior and Men’s Under-21 categories. In the 13th Asian Canoe Polo Championship held in Hualien, Taiwan, in 2009, Chinese Taipei won the Men’s Senior category, while Iran was the champion in the Women’s Senior and Men’s Under-21 categories. In the 14th Asian Canoe Polo Championship held in Tehran, Iran, in 2011, Iran was the champion in both the Men’s and Women’s Senior categories.

The semi-finals and finals of the 15th Asian Canoe Polo Championship will take place on 20 October. In the Men’s semi-finals, Japan will compete against Iran, while Singapore will face Chinese Taipei. In the Women’s semi-finals, Iran will play against India, and Singapore will take on Japan.

Canoe Polo is often described as a mix of water polo, basketball, and kayaking. The tactics and gameplay are similar to basketball and water polo but with the added challenge of manoeuvring boats. Players can use their kayaks to block, push, or jostle for position within six metres of the goal.

The sport was introduced in India in 1985 by the late Avinash Chander Kholi. Today, the association has around 2,500 individual members, 28 affiliated state associations, and 12 affiliated units.

MELC Delhi hosts three-Day Spiritual Camp

 

A three-day Crusade and Revival Camp, organised by the Manipur Evangelical Lutheran Church (MELC) Delhi, started on Wednesday (16 October 2013) at Don Bosco Technical Institute, Okhla, New Delhi.

Pastor Elvis Nehlal, a well-known evangelist from Manipur, delivered an inspiring message as the main speaker. He is also a popular singer in the Kuki community. Previously a member of the underground group, he left to dedicate his life to serving God as a Crusader for Christ.

MIZORAM lifted SUBROTO CUP for the THIRD Time, DEFEATS Assam 2-1

New Delhi, 15 October 2013: Mizoram has won the Subroto Cup for the third time in a row. Government Chawmfianga Middle School from Kolasib, Mizoram, defeated Betkuchi High School from Kamrup, Assam, by 2-1 in the final of the Sub-Junior Boys (U-14) Subroto Cup at Dr Ambedkar Stadium on Monday evening. The 54th edition of the tournament began on 27 September and saw 28 teams, including two foreign teams, competing.

The final match was intense, with both teams struggling to take control of the ball and score. Both sides were determined and played with great strength and strategy.

From the start, Mizoram dominated the match but missed several goal-scoring chances. Assam's defenders were strong and difficult to get past, acting as a solid shield for their team. Mizoram’s strikers found it hard to break through their defence.

Mizoram had the upper hand early in the game, but scoring was not easy. Assam’s goalkeeper was well aware of the danger posed by Mizoram’s star strikers, Lallawmsanga and Lalthansanga, who kept sending the ball towards the goal. Assam also had goal-scoring opportunities but missed about five or six chances. Both teams struggled to break each other’s defence.

Despite Assam’s resistance, Mizoram’s striker Lallawmsanga managed to break through and scored the first goal in the 28th minute. This was the only goal in the first half.

Runners Up - Assam

In the second half, Assam fought back but failed to score. However, luck favoured them when Mizoram defender SR Lallawmawma accidentally deflected the ball into his own goal in the 36th minute, equalising the score. Awma, who was almost in tears, stood firm to defend his team. The own goal occurred when an Assamese player crossed the ball from the right, and Lallawmawma attempted to clear it. Unfortunately, the ball bounced off his leg and rolled past Mizoram’s goalkeeper Lalmuansanga into the net.

As the match neared its end, the tension grew. The game remained fair, with no players receiving yellow or red cards. In the 47th minute, Lalawmpuia headed the ball to Lallawmsanga, who scored from close range, securing Mizoram’s victory with the second goal. When the final whistle blew, Mizoram’s supporters erupted in cheers, shouting “Hip hip hurray!”

Mizoram lifted the championship trophy along with a cash prize of Rs 2 lakh, medals, and certificates. Assam, as the runner-up, received a trophy, Rs 1 lakh, medals, and certificates.

Mizoram previously won the title in 2002 and 2003 and was the runner-up in 1998 and 2010. This was their sixth participation in the tournament, but it was the first time Government Chawmfianga Middle School had won.

“We are really happy. I can’t express my joy today,” said HC Zarzoliana, coach of the winning team.

Several individual awards were also given:

Best Player Award: Lalawmpuia (Mizoram) – Rs 25,000 and football boots

Best Goalkeeper Award: Chiran Swargiary (Assam) – Rs 20,000 and football boots

Most Promising Player Award: Nayanjyoti Kuli (Assam) – Laptop and football boots

Fair Play Trophy: Infant Jesus School, Goa – Rs 10,000

Best Coach Award: H.C. Zarzoliana (Mizoram) – Rs 25,000

Air Marshal HB Rajaram AVSM VSM, Air Officer-in-charge Administration and Vice Chairman of Subroto Mukherjee Sports Education Society, presented the prizes. He highlighted the importance of the U-14 category in identifying young football talents across India.

The Subroto Cup has three categories: U-14 Boys, U-17 Girls, and U-17 Boys. The U-17 Boys’ final will be held on 17 October, and the U-17 Girls’ final will take place on 19 October between RMSM Vidyalaya, Bishnupur, Manipur, and Government Senior Secondary School, Fatehabad, Haryana. Assam will play against Reverend Saiaithanga Memorial School, Aizawl, Mizoram, in the U-17 Boys’ semi-finals on 17 October.

On Tuesday, Magurmari High School, Kokrajhar, Assam, caused the biggest upset of the tournament by defeating hot favourites Troeschina from Kiev, Ukraine, with a 4-1 victory in the U-17 Boys’ quarter-final. Devide Basumatary (35th minute), Inngbla Brahma (40th), Kapil Kumar Ray (47th), and Josef Ekka (70th) scored for Assam, while Maxim Koshelev (45th) scored for Ukraine. In the girls’ section, Government Senior Secondary School, Fatehabad, Haryana, reached the final after a 4-0 victory over Tyssad School, Shillong, Meghalaya, with Nisha scoring a hat-trick.

In the U-17 Girls’ semi-final on 12 October, RMSM Vidyalaya, Nambol, Manipur, defeated Reverend Saiaithanga Memorial School, Aizawl, Mizoram, by 5-1. D Grace scored a hat-trick in the first half, while Ratanbala Devi added two more goals in the second half. Captain Lalhriattiri scored for Mizoram in the 30th minute.

Each year, over 20,000 schools participate in the qualification stage of the tournament. Selected young players receive scholarships for education and football training through the “Subroto Boys” programme.

However, despite Mizoram’s strong performance, none of its players were selected for The Air Force School (TAFS) U-14 Boys team, which picked 15 players for training.

Assam’s goalkeeper, Chiran Swargiary, receives the Best Goalkeeper Award (Rs 20,000 and a football boot).

Road to the Final:

Mizoram: Scored the most goals in the tournament, with 34 goals in five matches (excluding the final).

Rev Dr Chin Do Kham Passes Away in Maryland

AIZAWL, 15 October 2013: The Zomi community worldwide is mourning the sudden passing of a distinguished figure. Rev Dr Chin Do Kham (MDiv, DMin, PhD), affectionately known as Do Kham, passed away in the state of Maryland on 13 October 2013 due to a heart attack. He was 54.

Originally from Tiddim Township in Chin State, Myanmar, Dr Kham resided with his family in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He briefly served as a faculty member at Oral Roberts University in Tulsa and held a PhD in Theology from Trinity International University. He was the founder and president of Global Outreach and Community Development and also served as the president of both Zomi Inkuan USA and Global Zomi Inkuan.

He is survived by his wife, Ed, son Joshua, and daughter Mary. Dr Kham was reportedly set to attend the 3rd World Zomi Convention in Lamka, Manipur, as one of the main speakers from 25 to 27 October.

Manipur-based organisations, including the Zomi Council, Zomi Re-Unification Organisation (ZRO), and Siamsinpawlpi (SSPP) Headquarters, Aizawl, have expressed their deepest condolences to the bereaved family.

Manipur is slum-free state, reveals census

The Registrar General of India has recorded the state's slum population at 1,97,266 - the highest in the northeastern region - while Manipur has been reported as a total slum-free state.

The slum population in the state accounts for 0.63 per cent of the total population of 3,12,05,576 crore, according to a Census report on slums for 2011, which was published recently. Significantly, Arunachal Pradesh, which did not have any slums in the 2001 Census, has recorded slums in the 2011 Census.

Manipur, along with Daman & Diu, Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Lakshadweep have not reported any slums in 2011 Census, in which the national slum population is 6,54,94,604.

After the state, the next highest slum population in the region is 1,39,780 in Tripura, followed by 82,324 in Nagaland, 78,561 in Mizoram, 57,418 in Meghalaya and 15,562 in Arunachal Pradesh.

According to the Census report, Assam has 88 towns, of which 33 towns have slum dwellers. In Tripura, 15 of the 16 towns have slum dwellers. Mizoram has 23 towns and only one of them has slums while 11 of 19 towns in Nagaland have slum people. According to the report, the country has 2,613 slum towns in all.

The report also shows that Tripura has the fifth highest population of scheduled caste slum dwellers in the country. Mizoram has the lowest SC population in the country living in slums, but it has the highest scheduled tribe population living in slums in India.

According to the report, Mizoram's slum population has the highest literacy rate (98.1 per cent) in the country followed by Tripura (90.7%) in the third place, Meghalaya (89%) in fourth place and Nagaland (88.8%) in fifth place.

Tripura Maharaja Graces TSFD Freshers' Meet

New Delhi, Oct 7, 2013: The Tripura Students’ Forum (TSF) Delhi, organised its 11th Freshers’ Meet on Saturday evening at the Qutub Institutional Area. The event was graced by Tripura Maharaja, Pandyot Bikram Manikya, who is also the Editor of Northeast Today magazine, as the Chief Guest. Dr Yaruingam Awunghsi, Head of the Department of African Studies, Delhi University, attended as the Special Guest.

Held at Srimanta Sankardeva Bhawan, Assam Association, the programme witnessed a vibrant gathering of Tiprasas residing in the national capital. The boys donned formal attire with Risha, while the girls showcased their traditional dress.

Addressing the students, Maharaja Manikya urged them to remain focused. “Don’t get into politics. Follow your leader. Politics and political parties exist only for elections, which happen every five years,” he said. “We need to wake up and stand united. The system of governance has created further division among us. We must rise beyond it.” He added, “If you are affected, it also affects me. We are one—the indigenous people of Tripura.”

The Maharaja also spoke about the recent declaration of the Ujjayanta Palace as a heritage building. Defending the 112-year-old palace, he remarked, “Let them [the government] build statues and museums of Rabindranath Tagore, Swami Vivekananda, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose—I don’t mind. But why are they trying to take away the heritage of the indigenous people of Tripura?”

A dynamic personality, the young Maharaja serves as the General Secretary of Tripura Pradesh Congress and Chairman of the Royal Tripura Foundation, in addition to being actively involved in social work, including establishing schools in remote areas.

Dr Awungshi, the Special Guest, spoke on the importance of quality over quantity. He urged students to cultivate intellectual excellence and uphold moral values. “If morality deteriorates, we deteriorate. You must nurture intellectualism, for we live in an era of knowledge,” he said.

The evening was filled with cultural performances, including Lebang Bumani, the Reang community’s traditional Dailo dance, the modern-Kokborok fusion dance Oh Jadu, Kwchang Kwchang, and Mokol Bal.

The freshers performed the Kokborok dance Kowai Khili, while senior students choreographed an elegant Bollywood dance. An English-style dance, followed by a Hindi Longi dance, also drew enthusiastic cheers from the audience. A special skit presented by the president and two male colleagues had the crowd roaring with laughter.

The first round of freshers’ introductions was followed by a cake-cutting ceremony, symbolising a warm welcome by the senior members. Dr Yaruingam Awunghsi and TSDF President Ms Tiffani Kalai jointly cut the cake.

Hamu Jamatia, a student of Dayal Singh College, and Tanushree Debbarma, from the Regional Institute of Management, Gurgaon, were crowned Mr and Miss Fresher, respectively.

The event was a rich celebration of Tripura’s culture and history, showcased through vibrant dances, songs, and skits by talented students. It would not be an exaggeration to say that Tripura students are natural performers, effortlessly dancing to English, Hindi, and Punjabi beats. The evening concluded with Wahan Mosodeng, a signature dish of Tripura.

General strike cripples life in Manipur

Imphal, Oct. 7 2013--- Normal life was disrupted in Manipur on Monday in response to the 12-hour general strike called to highlight the problems stemming out of the construction of the fence along the Manipur-Myanmar border. Contending that the union government has turned a deaf ear to the public outcry, the Committee on Protection of Land in Border Fence called the strike. A number of organisations have extended support to the general strike.

All commercial vehicles were off the roads. Buses plying to long distances and trucks including inter-state services were off the roads. All educational institutes were closed, and thin attendance reported in government offices. Many patients from far off places requiring medical attention could not make it to hospitals in Imphal.

There was no report of untoward incident during the general strike. Trucks and passenger buses coming from other north-eastern states were stranded at the border towns of Mao and Jiribam. The legalised border trade at Moreh in Manipur and Namphalong in Mynmar was also ground to a halt.

Police sources said that it was not possible to provide armed escorts to all vehicles during the general strike.

Brozendra Ningomba, convener of the Protection of Land in Border Fence told The Hindu that his organisation and the Manipur government have brought the issue to the notice of the union government. However, till date there has been no response at all. He said that the general strike is just the beginning and warned of more stirs since Manipur will be lossing large chunks of land once the border fence is completed.

After the completion of the border fence 18 villages in the three border districts will be affected. Choro Khunnou village in Ukhrul district will go entirely to Myanmar. When there were protests the Manipur government set up an official committee to look into the matter. It is in the backdrop of the report that Myanmarese army had intruded to Hollenphai village, 3 km away from the police station at Moreh, the border town. When civil and police officials rushed there the Myanmarese army officer maintained that the area belongs to Myanmar as per maps maintained by the Birtishers.

Suresh Babu, the principal secretary (Home) told reporters that what was being constructed was a security wall and not border fence.

Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam Gangmei said that once the committee submits its report, a ministerial team will visit the border areas.
