NESSDU hosts Intellectual Meet cum Freshers Orientation 2014

New Delhi, 13 Sept 2014: The North East Students’ Society Delhi University (NESSDU) held its annual fest, “The Intellectual Meet cum Freshers Orientation,” at Talkatora Stadium in New Delhi, under the theme “Reconciliation & Social Transformation Through Education.”

The event, which drew a large crowd of Northeast students, was graced by notable dignitaries including Oscar Fernandes, MP (Rajya Sabha), Takam Sanjoy, former MP from Arunachal Pradesh, and Robin Hibu, IGP (Women & Child Cell), Delhi Police, who served as Chief Guest, Guest of Honour, and Speaker, respectively. Student leaders from across the Northeast and representatives from NSUI and BJP were also in attendance.

Founded on July 2, 2012, NESSDU has grown into the largest student organization representing all eight Northeastern states in Delhi University. The society aims to promote unity, peace, and cultural pride among Northeast students while helping them navigate university life without the feelings of alienation or inferiority.

NESSDU President Saveio Khole, speaking to TNT, emphasized the society’s mission to unify the scattered Northeastern students at Delhi University. Despite facing personal attacks for his leadership, Khole continues to champion the cause of unity and cultural representation for the students.

The event saw students from all over Delhi flock to the stadium, which remained packed with vibrant youth throughout the day.

Oscar Fernandes, in his address, encouraged the students to take pride in their talents and seek recognition in the capital city, which he emphasized was within their reach. As a token of appreciation, the organizers presented mementos to the dignitaries.

Robin Hibu, a guiding figure for Northeast students in Delhi and Nodal Officer of the NE, Delhi Police, spoke on safety measures initiated for the community, urging the students to take charge of their future. Hibu remarked, “What will decide tomorrow is in your hands today.”

Takam Sanjoy, former MP from Arunachal Pradesh, shared practical advice, encouraging the students to embrace greetings like “Namaskar” and “Jai Hind” to bridge cultural gaps. He also stressed the importance of networking and learning for personal growth.

Despite the heavy rain outside, the festivities inside the stadium continued without interruption. Comperes Tenzin and Zugami, followed by Thaopu and Zeena in the second session, kept the crowd energized, especially during the freshers' introduction.

The event showcased a wide array of talent, including a soulful performance by Manipur’s Mary Vaiphei, a mesmerizing dance by the Zovontawi Crew, and stunning cultural performances like Assamese Bihu, Chakma dances, and Kuki bamboo dances.

The night concluded with solo performances, a band session, and the highly anticipated Mr. and Miss NESSDU Fresher titles, which were awarded to Mr. Aron from Motilal Nehru College and Miss Pooja Lama from Maitreyi College, respectively.

The day’s festivities not only celebrated cultural diversity but also fostered a sense of unity and pride among Northeast students in the heart of the nation’s capital.

Another NE Girl Stabbed in Delhi

New Delhi, 11 Sep 2014: Just two days after a girl from Manipur was stabbed in Dwarka, another girl from Arunachal Pradesh was attacked with knives by unknown assailants in South Delhi on Wednesday (Sep 9) night. This marks the second brutal assault on girls from the Northeast in the national capital within three days.

The victim, a staff nurse at AIIMS, was attacked while on night duty. The attackers attempted to strangle her, according to the police. An FIR has been registered at Hauz Khas police station, though no arrests had been made at the time of this report.

Robin Hibu, IPS, Nodal Officer for North East, Delhi Police, stated that he had contacted the SHO, urging immediate arrests.

Earlier, on Monday night, a girl from Manipur was stabbed multiple times by three men in Dwarka Sector 22. She sustained several injuries and was hospitalized but later discharged. In that case, police apprehended one suspect, but his accomplices remain at large.

Manipur Girl Stabbed in Brutal Attack in Delhi

New Delhi, 09 Sep 2014: In a gruesome incident, Silvia Hatpi Vaiphei, a girl from Manipur, was stabbed multiple times by local goons in Dwarka Sector 22 on Monday night (Sep 7). The attack occurred around 7 p.m. when Silvia was out buying household items. Three to four men, riding on bikes, assaulted her, stabbing her in the neck, waist, and leg, leaving her with serious injuries.

Silvia was initially rushed to Artemis Hospital in Dwarka and later transferred to Bensups Hospital, where her condition remains critical. Around 50-70 Northeast community leaders gathered at the hospital late into the night to show their support.

Silvia, who resides with her sister's family in Dwarka, is receiving medical care as police investigate the attack. One of the attackers has been arrested, though the motive for the attack remains unclear. Further details are awaited as the investigation continues.

Delhi Police launched 24/7 Special Police Unit for North East People

New Delhi, 03 Sep 2014: To ensure the safety of the North East community in Delhi, the Delhi Police has launched a 24/7 Special Police Unit for North East People. This unit is located at the Joint Commissioner of Police for Crime Against Women and Children Office, near the Post Office behind Gurudwara, Nanakpura, New Delhi -21. The office's landline and fax number is 11-24104568.

According to IGP Robin Hibu, IPS, Nodal Officer for North East People, twenty-one police officials from North Eastern states have been assigned to the unit. Currently, there are 41 police personnel from Delhi Police out of a total force of 84,000 dedicated to supporting the North East community.

A separate helpline specifically for North East individuals is available at 1093, with nine NE police officials assigned to operate it 24/7. The first North East Special Police Unit includes the names, mobile numbers, and states of origin for direct contact in emergencies, enabling communication in their mother tongues.

Nagas Protest Against Imposition of Section 144 CrPC in Ukhrul

New Delhi, 03 Sep 2014: Thousands of Nagas gathered at Jantar Mantar on Wednesday to protest the recent killings of innocent Naga civilians by Manipur Commandos and the Indian Reserved Battalion during a peaceful rally in Ukhrul town on August 30. The protest, organized by the Naga Students' Union, Delhi (NSUD), condemned the imposition of Section 144 CrPC in Ukhrul District.

According to a press statement by NSUD, the unprovoked firing stemmed from the imposition of Section 144 CrPC following the assassination of Mr. Ngalangzar Malue, a member of the Autonomous District Council (ADC), on July 12, 2014. Mr. Malue was gunned down by unidentified armed men 22 km from Ukhrul town.

Following the incident, the Manipur government raided the public liaison office of the National Socialist Council of Nagaland (NSCN-IM) and arrested eight cadres. On the same day, Section 144 CrPC was imposed in the district's headquarters.

NSUD condemned the government's actions, stating that it unfairly targeted the Naga community without conducting a proper legal investigation. The union warned that the "draconian" actions of the Manipur government and the Central government’s negligence could provoke an open civil uprising, jeopardizing the peace and coexistence between the hills and valley communities in Manipur.

NSUD also highlighted the impact on innocent students who are unable to pursue their education, and the broader public, who are deprived of their daily freedoms, including movement and association.

"We, the Nagas, have been suffering for 68 years. We demand the withdrawal of security forces from Ukhrul, the removal of Section 144 CrPC, and an expedited resolution of the Indo-Naga talks," said NSUD spokesperson Lakpachui Siro.

The protestors burned an effigy of Manipur Chief Minister Ibobi Singh near Parliament Street Police Station, shouting slogans in unison. NSUD submitted memoranda to the President of India, the Union Home Minister, the Chairman of the National Human Rights Commission, and the Chief Justice of the High Court of Manipur.

The Naga People's Movement for Human Rights (NPMHR) also condemned the killings and organized a separate protest at Jantar Mantar on Tuesday, expressing solidarity with the cause.

Manipur ADC Members Demand Extension of Sixth Schedule in Tribal Areas

New Delhi, 02 Sep 2014: A group of Members of District Councils from Manipur has recently arrived in the capital to organize a demonstration advocating for the extension of the provisions of the Sixth Schedule to the tribal areas of Manipur. This demonstration is set to take place at Jantar Mantar, New Delhi, on September 5.

According to a press release issued on Tuesday, the six existing Autonomous District Councils (ADCs) in Manipur—namely Churachandpur, Chandel, Sadar Hills, Senapati, Ukhrul, and Tamenglong—were established in 1973 in accordance with the North Eastern Reorganization Act, 1971, which was later enacted as ‘The Manipur (Hill Areas) District Council Act, 1971’. However, after functioning for approximately 16 years, these councils were stripped of their powers and functions as outlined in the Acts and Rules.

The elections for the Members of the District Council were boycotted starting in 1989 due to demands for the extension of the Sixth Schedule provisions of the Indian Constitution to all six ADCs. In 2010, elections were held under the Manipur (Hill Areas) District Council, Third Amendment Act 2008. Since then, the elected members have been working diligently, hoping that the aspirations of the tribal people would finally be realized after two decades without local self-governance.

Unfortunately, even after four years, the condition of the ADCs remains disappointing, rendering them virtually meaningless as autonomous entities. Under the 2008 Act, 26 subjects were listed under Section 29, sub-section (1) of the principal Act, but more than half of these subjects have not been devolved as promised by the government. Furthermore, no corresponding rules regarding finance, powers, and functions have been established to date.

Having experienced the insincerity of the Government of Manipur, the representatives have decided to persistently pursue their demand for the extension of the Sixth Schedule. They point out that all tribal areas in the northeastern states—such as Mizoram, Meghalaya, Assam, and Tripura—have been granted the provisions of the Sixth Schedule to safeguard the interests, customs, and cultures of the tribal populations. In contrast, the hill areas of Manipur remain unattended and unjustly excluded from these provisions.

“The demand for the implementation of the Sixth Schedule provisions in the hill areas of Manipur is not a new issue, but rather a pending solution for over four decades. Three successive state governments have adopted resolutions for its implementation based on the recommendations of the Hill Areas Committee (HAC). We have also consistently pursued this matter with various central leaders,” stated the press release.

Despite these efforts, there has been no progress or initiative from either the state or central government. Therefore, the representatives of the Autonomous District Councils are holding peaceful demonstrations to express their grievances over the indifference of both governments toward the plight of the hill tribal people.

The current situation in the hills of Manipur can be attributed to the absence of local self-government. The ADC members believe that strengthening this fundamental aspect of democracy will enhance the nation and promote national integration.

MANIPUR AUTONOMOUS DISTRICT COUNCILS: INVITATION

DEMONSTRATION IN DEMAND FOR EXTENSION OF THE PROVISIONS OF

THE SIXTH SCHEDULE TO THE CONSTITUTION OF INDIA

TO THE TRIBAL AREAS OF MANIPUR

The existing 6(six) Autonomous District Councils (ADCs) in Manipur i.e.(1) Churachandpur( 2) Chandel (3) Sadar Hills (4) Senapati (5) Ukhrul and (6) Tamenglong were installed in the year 1973 in pursuance of the North Eastern Reorganization Act, 1971 and later subsequently passed as Parliamentary Act called ‘The Manipur(Hill Areas) District Council Act, 1971’. However, the council after functioning for about 16 years, were denied of the powers and functions of the Acts and Rules . 

Hence, the subsequent Election to the Member of District Council was boycotted from 1989 in demand for extension of the Sixth Scheduled Provision of the Indian Constitution in all the six (6) ADCs. 

In 2010 election to ADCs were held under the Manipur(Hill Areas) District Council, Third(3^rd) Amendment Act 2008. Since then, the elected members have been sincerely functioning with the hope that after twenty years of absence of Local Self Governance the aspiration of the tribal people would be realized. 

However, even after completion of four (4) years the condition of the ADCs is disappointing and has no meaning in its existence as an autonomous entity. 

According to the 2008 Act Power to the 26(twenty six) subjects were enlisted under Section 29 in sub-section (1) of the principal Act but more than half of the subject has not been devolved till date even though the Govt. issued order to this effect. Further, no Rules corresponding to the Act of 2008 in regards to Finance, Power and functions etc. were frame till today. 

Having tasted the insincerity of the Government of Manipur, we decided to persistently follow up our demand for 6^th schedule extension. Whereas, all Tribal Areas in the whole of the North Eastern State such as Mizoram, Meghalaya, Assam and Tripura had been extended to the Sixth Scheduled Provision to safeguard the interest, customs and culture of the tribal, the Hill Areas of Manipur remain unattended and unjustly left out from extension of the Sixth Schedule Provision of the Constitution of India.

Delhi Kuki, Mao, Hmar CELEBRATES Freshers’ Meet 2014

New Delhi, 31 Aug 2014: The Hmar Students Association (HAS) Joint Headquarters in Delhi celebrated its 29th Fresher Social Meet at the International Youth Centre in Chanakyapuri on August 30, 2014, marking the 75th anniversary of the Hmar Students Association.

Similarly, the Kuki Students Organisation (KSO) hosted its 27th Freshers Meet at the MTNL Hall in RK Puram Sector VI. 

The Mao Students’ Union Delhi also celebrated its 44th Freshers Meet at Shanker Lal Hall in Delhi University. The events featured day-long celebrations where participants donned traditional attire and enjoyed typical cuisine during lunch, followed by dinner at the end of the program.

The celebrations highlighted the rich traditions and cultural dances of the Hmar, Kuki, and Mao tribes. Freshers were introduced to the audience and received blessings from seniors and pastors. The festivities included a Mr. and Miss Fresher contest, with talented singers entertaining the attendees throughout the events.

3rd Edition of Hriday Manch Theatre Festival set to delight audiences

New Delhi, August 25, 2014: Theatre enthusiasts are in for a treat as Sparsh Natya Rang, a Delhi-based theatre group founded in 2005, is all set to present the third edition of its annual theatre festival, “Hriday Manch.” The four-day event will be held at Sri Ram Centre, Mandi House, from August 28 to 31, 2014, at 7 PM. Sparsh Natya Rang has long been associated with renowned actors, directors, and writers, and has consistently provided a platform for various theatre groups, folk dancers, and musicians across India. The group is also known for its special initiatives for underprivileged children.

Hriday Manch goes a step further by offering a unique platform for theatre groups from both inside and outside Delhi to showcase their talents. Theatre lovers will have the chance to witness a variety of plays, each performed on a different day, promising a rich blend of comedy, drama, and romance.

The festival will kick off with Neem Hakeem Khatra-e-Jaan on Day 1, an adaptation of Moliere's work. This Sparsh Natya Rang production, adapted by V. K. Sharma and Amitabh Srivastava, with music and direction by Ajit Chowdhury, tells a comedic story of a wife seeking revenge on her drunkard husband, who is accidentally turned into a doctor.

Day 2 will feature Sakharam Binder, a high-intensity drama written by Vijay Tendulkar and directed by Suresh Sharma. Presented by Himachal Culture Research Forum Theatre Repertory, the play explores the rebellious actions of a bookbinder who challenges societal norms and marital hypocrisy.

On August 30, audiences will enjoy Bobby Breaker, the story of a young man named Bobby, who struggles with a stammer. Despite being mocked by society, Bobby is determined to overcome his speech impediment for the love of his life, Ms. Choudhary.

The festival will conclude with Aadhi Sadi, a collection of four short stories – Ussne Kaha Tha, Pazeb, Parda, and Chief ki Dawat – staged by Sambhav Art group and directed by Devendra Raj Ankur. These stories, written by literary figures like Chandradhar Sharma Guleri, Jainendra Kumar, Yashpal, and Bhishm Sahni, depict the first 50 years of modern Hindi literature, with love as the common thread.

Ngambom FC WINS 3rd Rajiv Gandhi Sports Meet Trophy 2014

New Delhi, 26 Aug 2014: The final match of the 3rd Rajiv Gandhi Sports Meet concluded on Monday, with Ngambom FC triumphing over Mazeltove CF in a penalty shootout. This year, 43 teams competed for the coveted trophy over four days.

Both teams showed strong offensive plays in the first half, but neither could score. After an intense second half, the match remained tied, leading to the shootout where Mazeltove missed two goals, while Ngambom missed one.

The closing ceremony was graced by Oscar Fernandez, MP (Rajya Sabha), as the chief guest, alongside Girish Chaudankar, AICC Secretary-in-charge of NSUI, and Roji M. John, National President of NSUI, as guests of honour.

Ngambom FC walked away with a cash prize of Rs 20,000, along with the trophy and certificate. The name “Ngambom” is derived from a Kuki folktale about a boy who sacrificed himself to reunite with his beloved, Khupting, in the afterlife.

Mazeltove CF got underway in a festive atmosphere, with Oscar Fernandez, MP (Rajya Sabha),
kicking off the ball with great enthusiasm. As the ball rolled onto the field, the officials,
players, and friends in attendance erupted in jubilant joy, setting the tone for an exciting match.

Mazeltove received a cash prize of Rs 10,000, trophy, and certificates, while Feather Head United claimed the second runner-up prize, consisting of a trophy and certificates.

Mazeltove’s striker Jiden was named the Best Player, receiving a cash prize of Rs 2000 and a certificate.

All individual players from the teams were awarded certificates as well.

Organized by the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI), the sports meet took place at Chhatrasal Stadium from August 22-25 for North East students of Delhi University.

Runners up: Mazeltove CF 

“We love football, so we don’t mind playing under the scorching sun for four consecutive days,” said Mr. Len, a DU student from Manipur.

“This year, we have the highest number of participants. We organized this for North East students of Delhi University to showcase their skills and talents,” said Subrat Borah, chief of the organizer.
