Dr Sir HH Mate: The Jewel of Manipur

NO INDIVIDUAL in India has ever received 100 awards in a lifetime — except for Dr. Sir H.H. Mate, a humble and multifaceted personality from Manipur, one of India's most strife-torn states. Recently, SATYA DESH, a renowned national magazine, had its special correspondent visit Dr. H.H. Mate and his family at their home. Dr. Mate is a man of extraordinary talents: a distinguished scientist, educationist, social worker, writer, and deeply religious individual.

Dr. Houlim Hemkholun Mate, also known as H.H. Mate, has been conferred with an astounding 123 awards by 2014, including 26 prestigious awards in 2014, 24 in 2013, and 28 in 2012. In January 2015 alone, he received the International Corporate Leadership Award in Bangkok (January 15) and the Jewel of Asia in Panaji, Goa (January 31).

More accolades are lined up for Dr. Mate, including:

  1. International Economic Gold Star Award (Bangkok, February 2, 2015)
  2. International Status Award for Intellectual People (Bangkok, February 2, 2015)
  3. Pearson Teaching Award (New Delhi, March 2015)
  4. Nelson Mandela Peace International Award (Moscow, June 2015)
  5. Star of Asia International Award (Moscow, June 2015)

To date, Dr. Mate has been recognized with 79 national awards, 38 international awards, and six state-level awards, with many more expected in the future.

The Apostolic Theological Seminary, New Delhi, awarded Dr. Mate an honorary Doctor of Divinity in 2011. His contributions to education and society are monumental, having authored over 1,500 articles, 31 research papers, 15 books, and 53 seminar papers, including eight international and 45 national/state-level presentations. Additionally, he has completed seven research projects published in scientific journals. Three of his books—Know Your Space & Universe, Ways for Reforming the Nation, and Education is the Maker of Life—are currently awaiting publication.

As an educationist, Dr. Mate has guided two MPhil students (completed in 2004 and 2006), three PhD scholars (completed in 2005, 2006, and 2010), and three technical research students, including one BTech and two MTech candidates (completed in 2009 and 2010). From 1994 to 1998, he also authored Thadou-Kuki (MIL) textbooks for Classes IX to XII.

In his quest to explore the identity of the Chin-Kuki-Mizo-Zomi community, Dr. Mate has conducted significant research on Maneshe—the lost tribe of Israel. His earlier work includes contributions to the National Research Laboratory for the Conservation of Chin, Kuki, and Mizo cultural heritage across India, Myanmar, and Bangladesh.

Dr. Mate has traveled extensively, visiting countries such as the United States (Washington, New York, North Carolina), the United Kingdom (London), France (Paris), Norway (Helsinki), Thailand (Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Pattaya), Nepal (Kathmandu), the UAE (Dubai), Russia (Tashkent), Mauritius, Singapore, Malaysia (Kuala Lumpur), and Sri Lanka (Colombo).

In 2014, the Autonomous District Council of Churachandpur (ADCC), Manipur, led by its Chairman Langkhanpau Guite, presented a new car to Dr. Mate at DM Veng Community Hall in recognition of his achievements.

Born in 1957 to Mr. Holkhojam and Mrs. Deihat in Lamjang Village, Chandel district, Dr. Mate is the eldest of five brothers and four sisters. Despite scoring only 38% in his HSLC exams, he persevered, completing his PUC (Science) with 45% and BSc (Physics) with 58% from Churachandpur College in 1982 and 1985, respectively. He went on to earn a BE (Electronics & Telecommunications) with 63% from AMIETE, New Delhi (1989), MSc (Physics) with 73%, MPhil (Physics) with 75%, and a PhD (Physics) with 78% from Osmania University, Hyderabad (1991-1999). He was the topper of his MPhil batch.

One of Dr. Mate's most profound moments came in a dream in 1989, when he envisioned meeting the great scientist Albert Einstein, who blessed him to teach and inspire others in the fields of education, science and technology, and social work. This dream became the cornerstone of his life's mission.

Mrs & Mr Mate

Married to Kimjalam in 2000, Dr. Mate is blessed with five daughters. In 1997, he received his first national recognition, the Bharat Excellence Award, shortly after completing three books over 15 years.

Dr. Mate served as a Junior Scientist at ISRO, New Delhi, for eight years before resigning to pursue his dream. In 2002, he established the Dr. S. Radhakrishnan Foundation School in Tuibuang, Churachandpur, to provide quality education for underprivileged children. He has personally sponsored 35 orphans. Last year, the school achieved an 80% pass rate, with 800 students enrolled and 74 Class-10 students currently preparing for board exams.

Despite being nominated twice for the Padma Shri Award, Dr. Mate has not yet received it, a fact he attributes to political factors. “I am not happy with the Manipur Government because my name has been overlooked for the Padma Shri many times without any reason. But I am not demanding it,” he stated.

Dr Mate and Special Correspondent of Satya Desh

Dr. Mate continues to dedicate his life to molding young minds and uplifting society, leaving an indelible mark as a scholar, scientist, and humanitarian.
