KNA Request for Transfer of Kuki Inmates from Manipur Central Jail Sajiwa
Justice V. Ramasubramanian
Chairperson, National Human Rights Commission (NHRC)
Manav Adhikar Bhavan, Block-C
GPO Complex, INA
New Delhi - 110023
Subject: Request for Transfer of Kuki Inmates from Manipur Central Jail Sajiwa
Honourable Sir,
I am writing to you on behalf of the Kuki people to request your esteemed office to investigate the condition of Kuki prisoners in Manipur Central Jail Sajiwa and prevent human rights degradation and discrimination against them.
As you may be aware, Manipur has witnessed ethnic violence since May 3, 2023, and the prevailing situation remains unchanged, with no substantial solution found to control the unrest in the state. Consequently, the Kuki inmates of Manipur Central Jail Sajiwa have been severely affected by the Meetei-Kuki conflict and have been unable to exercise their fundamental rights within the prison.
They face significant challenges in contacting their families and relatives, unlike their fellow inmates, and are often barred from receiving visitors. Furthermore, due to the communal and geographical division between Meeteis and Kukis, it is extremely difficult for any Kuki individual to visit Imphal, as there are no Kukis left in the Meetei-dominated areas.
In light of these circumstances, we respectfully request that your office take necessary steps to uphold the dignity of our Constitution and provide safety and liberty to the minority Kuki community. We urge you to protect their rights and consider transferring the Kuki inmates to a jail outside Manipur State or creating a separate jail for Kukis in their dominated area.
Thank you for your concern and consideration.
Sincerely,
Mangboi Haokip
Spokesperson, Kuki National Assembly
