Veteran Journalist Yambem Laba Abducted by Meitei militants, Later Released
VETERAN JOURNALIST and Special Correspondent of The Statesman, Yambem Laba, was abducted by a group of around 20 armed gunmen from
his residence in Imphal at around 3 a.m. today. He was released after several
hours in captivity.
According to a
complaint filed with the Officer-in-Charge of Imphal Police Station by his
brother, retired Army Major Yambem Angamba Singh, the 69-year-old journalist
was taken just hours after speaking to a local television channel about the
proliferation of armed groups in Manipur, The
Statesman reports.
The
abduction took place shortly after the resignation of Manipur Chief Minister N.
Biren Singh, who has been accused of playing a partisan role in the state’s
ethnic conflict. His administration, criticized for its failure to curb
violence, has also faced allegations of allowing civilians to raid police
armories and seize lethal weapons.

Biren Singh Steps Down, Kuki-Zo Demands Persist
The resignation
of MANIPUR Chief Minister N. Biren Singh on Sunday, 9 February
2025, marks a significant turning point in BJP-ruled Manipur, a state that has
been grappling with violence and unrest for over 21 months. His unexpected
resignation has sparked widespread speculation, particularly as it comes just
ahead of the scheduled Manipur Assembly session. Political analysts and
opposition leaders are questioning the timing of his decision, with some
suggesting that it may be linked to internal party dynamics, pressure from the
central leadership, or mounting public discontent over the handling of the
ongoing crisis.

However, as reported by the media, the demand of the Kuki-Zo people has remained unchanged. The Kukis and Meiteis have been physically and emotionally separated due to the prolonged violence, deepening the communal divide. It is time for the central government to present a long-term solution beyond mere lip service. The minority and historically oppressed Kuki-Zo people need a separate homeland where they can enjoy their fundamental rights and live in security.
Granting a separate STATE or Union Territory to the Kuki-Zos could also offer political advantages for the BJP in the future. Unlike the Meitei underground groups, which are actively fighting for a breakaway from the Indian Union, the Kuki-Zos are peace-loving and have always remained loyal citizens of India. Their historical record reflects this, particularly their resistance against British colonial forces in 1917–1919 to defend their ancestral land, which was never under the rule of Meitei kings. In light of these realities, a decisive and just resolution to the crisis in Manipur is imperative for lasting peace and stability in the region.
