Manipuri film 'Delhi Mellei' released in New Delhi

New Delhi, Nov 16, 2014: The highly anticipated Manipuri film "Delhi Mellei," focusing on the experiences of the northeast community in Delhi, premiered at Delhi University's Shankar Lal Auditorium on Saturday.

The screening was organized by the Manipuri Young Minds' Association, Delhi (MYMAD).

"Delhi Mellei" addresses the issue of discrimination faced by people from the Northeast in Delhi. The film's storyline follows the life of a young Manipuri girl, Mellei, who moves to Delhi for her undergraduate studies but becomes entangled in a lifestyle of late-night parties, drinking, and bad habits. She eventually returns to her home state, having failed to meet her parents' expectations. The film delivers a strong message to parents back home, urging them to remain attentive to their children to prevent them from going astray.

The premiere attracted a large audience, with the auditorium packed for both the first and second screenings.

Starring popular Manipuri actors Bonny Sharma and Hijam Bala Devi (who plays Mellei), the film appears poised to resonate strongly with the Northeast community.

"Delhi Mellei" was primarily filmed in locations around Delhi University, including Patel Chest (where the hero resides) and Vijay Nagar Double Story (where Mellei's character lives).

Raju Singh, the production controller, announced that the film was also screened at Chandigarh University on Sunday and will be shown in cities like Hyderabad, Pune, and Bangalore in the coming days.

Directed by Ajit Ningthouja and produced by Bishoya Potshangbam, "Delhi Mellei" began filming in September this year. Despite a modest budget, the film's central theme is expected to make a significant impact on the minds of the Northeast community, especially Manipuris.
