Assam Rifles inspects SoO designated camps in Manipur

Lamka, Feb 28, 2021: In an effort to ensure adherence to Suspension of Operation ground rules by signatory underground insurgent cadres, Churachandpur Battalion of Assam Rifles carried out inspections of SoO camps jointly with the district police in Sangaikot, Churachandpur and Henglep subdivisions on Saturday.

In addition to checking attendance of the SoO signatory insurgent cadres inside the designated camps, sensitization programs on COVID-19 precautions and vaccination drives were also held. Various details of the cadres were also collected for the preparation of Aadhar cards.

Moreover, infrastructure requirements of the SoO camps were also noted for appropriate renovations by DRDA.

Furthermore, recent violations of SoO ground rules by few SoO groups were also discussed and the cadres were advised to strictly follow the guidelines and not indulge in any illegal or prohibited activities.

It needs to be mentioned here that, earlier this week, Manipur DGP LM Khaute had issued an order to the district police superintendents to ensure that the SoO cadres don't indulge in any unlawful activities prohibited under the SoO agreements and initiate legal actions against all violators including civil society members.

Indian Army has published the notification for admission to 4 years B Sc. (Nursing) Course 2021 in the employment newspaper dated 13 February to 19 February 2021.

Manipur Hill Journalists’ Union: Condemnation

The Manipur Hill Journalists' Union (MHJU)  condemns in the strongest term the bombing attack on the twin offices of Poknapham and The People's Chronicles, located at the heart of Imphal on the 13th February, 2021. Owing to its role and importance, press/media is regarded as the fourth estate or fourth pillar of democracy and such a
savage act on media house in this age is totally uncalled for. 

The MHJU consider such a cowardly act as attack on journalism and media fraternity and warned the culprits to refrain from such act in future.

The MHJU urged the concerned authority to book the culprits and gave befitting punishment as per law.

The MHJU express our solidarity to the staffs of Poknapham and The People's Chronicles and further re-affirm our stand for media fraternity of the state and national level.

The MHJU appreciate the steps taken in connection with this incident by AMWJU and EGM and support the call for 48 hours cease work strike starting 16th February, 2021. All publications under MHJU will cease until further notice.

Exclusive Interview: Grace Simte, Makeup Artist

IN a candid chat with this young lady, she shared her story. Sorrow overshadowed her soon after her parents died. Out of the three siblings, she’s the middle, of two brothers. She began restless searching for an opportunity to stand on her own feet.  Both, her dad and mom passed away in 2012.  Inspite of many odds, she managed to passed XII standard. She hails from Kamdou Veng, Churachandpur, who is now residing in Gurgaon, with her younger brother – a college going student. She earnestly prayed to God. Gradually, she landed up into the world of make-up!

GS: I am honoured.

ZT: Can you tell us something about yourself?

GS: My name is Grace Simte. And I am a Certified Professional Makeup Artist. Currently working in Gurgaon, Haryana.

ZT: What actually is your job profile?

GS: A Certified Makeup Artist & also a Nail Technician.

ZT: Is this a regular or part time?

GS: It’s a regular Job.

ZT: How long have you been into this profession?

GS: I’ve been working in this field for the past 2 years.

GS: It’s always been my passion since my childhood. I would say it’s my determination that brought me unto this day.

ZT: Is this job, only for women?

GS: No, not at all. It’s for both male and female.

ZT: Where did you learn Makeup and Nail Extension?

GS: I was certified from Aashmeen Munjaal Star Academy, Gurgaon and I have learnt Nail work from Paint Box, Gurgaon.

ZT: What was your last job?

GS: I use to work as a Marketing Manager for a Guest House.

ZT: Before you came to Delhi, where were you?

GS: Manipur.

ZT: When did you landed in Delhi?

GS: In 2017.

ZT: What was your childhood dream?

GS: I actually dreamt of becoming Air Hostess or Singer, and ofcourse a Makeup Artist!

ZT: I’ve seen your singing in social media. Have you record any song so far? Or Any plan to make album?

GS: I actually got a chance to work with Mr L. Mawia Simte (artist) on a song and recorded it. I am planning to work on my singles in the coming days. My song is currently on Youtube…You can check it out. (Song name: Ka Selung Muanna)

GS: Well…I really love to sing and dance. You know all the girly stuffs...

ZT: Your favourite singer? 

GS: I am really fascinated by Lauren Daigle. She is a Christian Singer… apparently it was her song that brought me closer to God.

GS: Mom & Dad

ZT: Your favourite sport?

GS: I am not a sport person…but, I do like to play badminton.

 

ZT: Which place do you like to visit?

GS: I would really love to go to London.

ZT: Do you ever sing in the church or any event, before? 

GS: Actually I am a part of the worship team in our Church (ANDF Church, Gurgaon)

ZT: Is your place safe for women?

GS: Ahhh…I would say there’s no place safe for anyone. Anything can happen to anyone. But! Despite a lot of Crazy NEWS we have heard on TV and other media. God have been protecting me from trouble! So, I think we are only safe in His hands.

ZT: Do you ever face any harassment or racial abusive?

GS: No, nothing at all.

ZT: Do you love Bollywood songs?

GS: I love Arijit Singh and most of his songs.

ZT: How do you spend your Sundays?

GS: I go to Church every Sunday. Sometimes hang out with friends.

GS: I do actually miss them but God has been strengthening me to move on.

The Unforgotten Warriors: A Legacy of ZOU RESISTANCE against the BRITISH

THE Zous commemorated the Centenary of the Zou Gal (1917-1919) in Behiang village, Churachandpur district, near the Indo-Myanmar border, on December 18-19, 2017. The centenary stone, Zou Nampi Suongphum, was unveiled, and hundreds gathered to pay tribute to the souls who fought against the British during 1917-1919. Interestingly, Zou Nampi Suongphum is also inscribed in Zoulai script, adding a unique cultural touch to the memorial.

Zou Gal is also officially recorded as KUKI Rebellion (1917-1919) by the British.

Here is one of the folk songs composed by my grandfather, Pu Mangzathang (son of Goulian Dopmul), on the occasion of the uprising in our dialect:-

The seafaring White Imperialist coils like the ‘kill’ plant,

Tremors of earthquake do quiver the Zo world,

’Tis the land of my birth: I shall not part with it!

Stain’d with blood is my Sword

That has routed the adversaries of Zoland,

I shall yet fight with the wild Boar, injured.

“This folk song of the Zou, reflecting the collective mind of the natives, indicated that the anti-imperial fervour was very high in 1918; and interestingly the Britishers were compared by the native mind with the wild Boar, or with a native wild creeper-plant called ‘kill’. Independent India justifiably took pride in its legacy of colonial resistance. In Manipur, the Palace uprising and Rani Gaidinlieu's movement are relatively well-known. However, the "Kuki Rising" and the participation of the Zou tribe was less well-known. The anti-colonial legacy of the Zou is a tribute to the multi-ethnic people of Manipur itself," wrote Dr David Vumlallian Zou, a history professor in Delhi University.

To protect their land and people, the peace-loving Zou tribesmen were compelled to wage a costly war against the mighty British, who encroached upon their ancestral territory.

Hiengtam and Gotengkot Forts served as the two main centres of resistance for the Zous, where both British soldiers and Zou fighters suffered heavy casualties.

A remarkable aspect of this struggle was that, despite living in distant and scattered settlements, our forefathers rushed to the epicentre of the conflict to support their fellow Zou warriors.

Their love, sacrifice, and unity are praiseworthy and serve as an inspiration for future generations. Though they lived in the hills in thatched, straw, or wooden houses, they abandoned their agricultural work and joined the fight against imperialist forces to defend their ancestral homeland.

In other parts of the Kuki areas, fierce fighting also took place against the British. Early colonial writers referred to this as the “Kuki Rebellion”.

This story from our side has never been recorded, yet the truth remains.

At Zougal Cemetery stands the memorial stone of our brave Zou warriors, inscribed with their names, clan names, and villages — a lasting tribute to their sacrifice.

Pu Goulian: Father of my grandfathers -- Pu Thangchinkhup & Pu Mangzathang. 

Let us honour their legacy by reflecting on their names through the lens of this writer, who visited the cemetery on 01 February 2021, Monday morning 8:47 AM to pay tribute to his great-grandfathers from the Suantak-Dopmul clans: Pu Goulian Dopmul, Pu Suokviel of Hita village, Pu Phungsel, Chief of Tuollien village, Pu Genzakham of Khuainuai village, and Pu Khaamdal Dopmul.  This writer has discovered 97 names of Zou warriors. Undoubtedly, some may have been forgotten or remain untraceable.

The United Kingdom must acknowledge and apologize for the killing of our great-grandfathers on our ancestral land.

in our dialect about the Zou Gal:
