Demand ‘Territorial Council’ for the Zo Peoples

THE MIZO Students’ Union (MSU) and the Mizo Zirlai Pawl (Mizo Students’ Association/ MZP) are thrill on hearing the political development for the entire Zo people that the two organisations of Kuki National Organisation (KNO) and United Peoples’ Front (UPF) are united in one accord for political settlement and thereby a series of tripartite political talks have been going on with the representatives of Government of India, Government of Manipur and the negotiating team of both the KNO and UPF.
MSU and MZP sent letter to KNO and UPF collective leaderships saying “not to miss the chance for long-lasting solution of the political problem of the whole of Zo peoples under the present Manipur State”.
Here is the Letter dated the 23rd August, 2018.
To,
The President, Kuki National Organisation (KNO)
The Chairman, United People’s Front (UPF)
Subject: Territorial Council for the Zo Peoples.
Dear Zo Brothers,
We, the Mizo Students’ Union (MSU) and the Mizo Zirlai Pawl (Mizo Students’ Association) [MZP] are thrill on hearing the political development for the entire Zo people that the two organisations of Kuki National Organisation (KNO) and United Peoples’ Front (UPF) are united in one accord for political settlement and thereby a series of tripartite political talks have been going on with the representatives of Government of India, Government of Manipur and the negotiating team of both the KNO and UPF.
We have learnt from a reliable source that the KNO and the UPF submitted a joint Memorandum to the Government of India for a separate state, however the government is ready only for Territorial Council under the provisions of the Sixth Schedule. For that matter, the KNO and UPF constituted a Drafting Committee for the Autonomous Territorial Council (ATC). As per our understanding, the draft was submitted with consensus, focusing on the powers and functions for the proposed ATC rather than the vexed and contesting names for the Territorial Council since the Zo peoples in Manipur were called by different names. We were hopeful that the ATC would be given an appropriate name with consensus which is rooted in our culture.
When, on June 29, 2018, the KNO and UPF came up with two proposed names viz. Khul Territorial Council and Zalengam Territorial Council for discussion with civil society organisations, we were hopeful of a lasting solution for our brethren in Manipur. However, such hope was short lived by the meeting on July 10, 2018 at Kangpokpi where the KNO leaders backtracked on the earlier decision with regard to the name for the Territorial Council. To us, all these is also very perturbing.
We were worried that the KNO and UPF would separately approach the Government of India which may be seen as a sign of disunity among the Zo peoples which may impair the process of our cherished political negotiation.
Thus, we feel oblige to write letters of same contents to President of KNO, the Chairman of UPF, the Convener and the Joint Convener of Negotiating Team of KNO-UPF as it is critically important that you would stand firm on the bond of unity in the truest spirit to take the task of Zo nation-building process forward.
And, it is desirable from our point of view, if there is no consensus between KNO and UPF, the Name of the Territorial Council includes the term ‘Zo’ as it appears to be acceptable to all Zo-fate (Zo-descendants). In fact, all of us accept that we are an entity culturally, but due to various names by which we were known and called ourselves, we cannot transmute cultural entity into political entity. lt also appears to be most relevant in promoting Zo brotherhood and unity, not only who are living in the present State of Manipur alone but also the Zo Peoples all over the world. It is our firm belief that our Zo brothers in Manipur under KNO and UPF would become the torch-bearers in leading the project of Zo nation-building by adopting a name for their proposed Territorial Council which is in consonance with the vision of a shared future for all Zo peoples. We ask of them to imprint ‘Zo’ as a political recognition for our people in Manipur. Unity and brotherhood is our top priority in the Zo Nation building process not the variations or names of different groups. We are, indeed, inseparable and not detachable but connected in spite of artificial boundaries.
We, fervently beseech to the KNO and UPF collective leaderships not to miss the chance for long-lasting solution of the political problem of the whole of Zo peoples under the present Manipur State. It is our view that territorial council for the Zo people in Manipur is an important beginning step in realization of our ultimate political goal and rights, the Re-Unification. If we fail to make the right decision it will take generations to really correct the mistake and we will miss forever the cherished dream of Zo reunification.
May the Almighty God be with you and guide you throughout this crucial juncture.

Indian Bishop decries mob violence

BJP leaders and workers burn an effigy of the Chief Minister of West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee, in protest against the murder of a BJP worker, Trilochan Mahato, aged 20, in June. The BJP alleges that it was a political murder linked to the violent civic polls in the state, earlier the month

THE entire political class is to blame for the “polarisation and radicalisation” of India that has spawned mob violence, the Moderator of the Good Shepherd Church of India, the Rt Revd Joseph d’Souza, said this week.

After dozens of lynchings in recent months, people of all religions needed to join in countering the “mobocracy” he said.

The Telegraph reports that, in the past six months, 31 people have been killed across ten states, in most cases after being accused of kidnapping children in viral posts on Whatsapp and Facebook. Among them was Mohammad Azam Usmanseb, 32, an IT technician beaten to death by a mob of 200 last month.

Last month, the Chief Justice of India, Dipak Misra, condemned “horrendous acts of mobocracy” and urged the government to take action to combat lynchings and stop the spread of internet rumours that fuelled the violence.

“The people involved in mob violence believe that they have their own people in power, and the police don’t act when they should act,” Bishop d’Souza said on Tuesday.

Dalits, Muslims, churches, and Hindu leaders had all been targeted, he said.

“You cannot say directly that Modi and his government is involved in this, because no sane government can back this. But, you can trace it to the radicalisation of groups along very radical interpretations of Hinduism, which most Hindus do not subscribe to. So there are many moderate Hindus now fighting this. . .

“The political class as a whole, in my opinion, not just the BJP, is to be blamed for the polarisation and radicalisation of Indian society along caste and religious lines. In an attempt to get votes during an election they appeal to the narrow identities of people and their insecurities.”

The All India Christian Council — of which he is President — was leading efforts to find “fraternal partners between religious communities across the world to address these issues”. This would entail work to “challenge the lies that are being spread”, from claims that Christians were involved in forced conversions to the “demonisation” of Muslims, accused of being “terrorists and anti-national”, to reports that Dalits seeking rights were “Maoists”.

Social media was a “huge problem”, he confirmed. India had 600 million mobile-phone users, and “probably the largest Whatsapp community in the world. . . It’s a very effective tool now if you want to galvanise your friends and colleagues.” It had been used, he reported, to recruit the perpetrators of the rape and murder of an eight-year-old Kashmiri girl.

As President of the Dignity Freedom Network (formerly the Dalit Freedom Network), Bishop d’Souza said that the situation of Dalits was “both hopeful and also very challenging”. He highlighted the affirmative-action benefits granted to Dalits, and the success of the Network’s 104 centres and schools, currently educating 27,000 children. Seventy per cent of the 2300 graduates had entered higher education, and one young woman had secured a doctorate in pharmacology.

But Dalit and tribal women remained the primary victims of the country’s sex trade, and gender-selective abortions and female foeticide had resulted in the loss of almost 20 million girls.

“The mindset of Indians towards women is going to take some time to change across the caste system,” he said. “A woman is a burden while a male child is a blessing. . . We are combating that . . . across faith lines.”

The caste system “poisons all of society”, and as Dalits began to assert themselves, violence had been unleashed, he said. He cited the case of Rohith Chakravarti Vemula, a PhD student at the University of Hyderabad who committed suicide in 2016. He was a member of the Ambedkar Students’ Association, which fights for the rights of Dalit students.

“The societal mindset of caste has permeated all of the religions including Christianity, it is shameful to say, in the South where there is so much of caste in the Church,” he said.

Born into a middle-class Christian family, he had been “blind” to their cause, growing up. But after marrying a Christian woman from a tribal background, and witnessing the caste protests of the 1990s, he had “had to wake up”.

“Now, of course, it completely dominates me,” he said. “I don’t think you can really do the full gospel if you ignore the issue of justice and righteousness and reconciliation.” ~ https://www.churchtimes.co.uk/articles/2018/17-august/news/world/indian-bishop-decries-mob-violence

Finally! Thangkhal New Testament Arrives

"New Testament in Thangkhal dialect released after many decades"

A HISTORIC moments for the Thangkhals in Manipur, a New Testament Bible in Thangkhal dialect has been released at Thangkhal Bible Church, Tuibuang Village, Churachandpur District on July 16, 2010 for the first time ever.

The Thangkhals does not have their own Church for more than 40 years and Bible for almost 30 years in the past, now they can leaps in boundless joy. A big joy for us!

Brief history
‘Thangkhal is a dialect-based community in Manipur. The word ‘Thangkhal’ derives from its village name, somewhere in Kawlgam, in which the Zous and Sukte tribes settled together in olden days. Haidawi, Khodai, Khuongnung, Tungkuo and Thangkhal are considered as the composite dialects of Zo tribe.

Thangkhal comprised of different clans practising same custom, culture and tradition from time immemorial. This lesser-known group ranging from 2000-3500 population identified themselves as ‘Thangkhal’ is constantly seeking tribe recognition; while some of them strongly advocated that they belong to Zou tribe. Thangkhal dialect is closely related to Paite, Tedim and Zou dialect.

The Thangkhal fore-fathers set-up their first home at ‘Mulaam’ in the southern part of Churachandpur, the exact year is yet unknown. Mulaam, literally means ‘an eagle casting over its prey’.

Early Church
The first Thangkhal church ‘Thangkhal Christian Association’ was established on April 4, 1981 at M. Tanglian village, about 15 kms away from Lamka town (Churachandpur). Since then the Thangkhal peoples unified in one denomination. M. Tanglian is the new location of Mulam. The initial ‘M’ stands for Mulam.

 Arrival of the Gospel
Known for their fierce ‘head hunting’, the villages of Thangkhals remained untouched for many decades. These dreaded warriors in Churachandpur hills received the gospel in 1939. A pastor from Evangelical Convention Church (Now EBCC) called ‘Thawngluan’ landed at T. Khazang village on March 7, 1939. This hamlet soon became the epicentre of Christianity in ‘Thangkhal Kual’, the hilly lands occupied by the Thangkhals in Manipur.

Organisations
In Manipur, Thangkhal Peoples’ Organisation and Thangkhal Youth Organisation was formed in 1978. The Zomi Fins (music band) formed in 1985 and Thangkhal Sinlai Pawlpi (students’ union) in 1987.

The Bible

Earlier several attempts failed to obtain the permission of Bible translation. For the first and the foremost in the history of Thangkhals, a New Testament Bible in Thangkhal dialect has been remarkably released by Rev. Dr. Z. K. Rochil, Auxiliary Secretary, Bible Society of India, Dimapur at Churachandpur’s Thangkhal Bible Church in Tuibuang village on July 18. Over 1000 crowd gathered at the historic event.

Rev. Dr. Zaihmingthanga, Assistant Director, BSI, Shillong, who tirelessly paved ways for Bible translation, could not attend the gathering. He send his greetings to the Thangkhals. The Thangkhal Bible Church has expressed their ‘heartfelt thanks’ to him.

On this auspicious day, Dr. Rochil encouraged the gatherings: “I want the Thangkhals should have a complete Holy Bible atleast during my tenure. I am ready to help the Thangkhals as much as I can in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.” The audience applauded Dr. Rochil’s words.

Speaking to our reporter over telephone from Manipur yesterday, a senior Thangkhal Bible Church leader Rev. Khaikhanthang, said “20,000 Bible has arrived now. One would be priced at Rs. 50. We are overwhelmed by the new Bible. We are very happy so much so that we could not express our happiness. Too see the much-awaited Bible for over many decades, is really amazing.”

“The news of the arrival of Thangkhal Bible touched each and every corner of the Thangkhals in Manipur. People sang jubilantly on this day. Everyone is happy to see the Bible. Even the Sunday collection on the releasing day touched Rs. 3945. This is the largest collection in a single day so far,” he added.

“It’s really great to have Bible in our own dialect. We’ve waited for so long,” says Mr. Kammuanmung, a Ph D student in JNU, New Delhi.

The writer with Pi Thuangkhongai
wife of Pu (L) Thawngluan in Feb 2015.
Behind the successful of this newly released Bible, the worth-mentioning prominent Thangkhals were Shri Ginsuanhau, President, United Zou Organisation, Manipur, for contributing Rs. 50,000; Shri Khamthang, Chief of Zoukhonuam and Shri Thangkhenhang, Chief of S. Zezaw village, for contributing Rs. 5000 each. From faith promised Rs. 10,000 collected and another Rs. 10,000 gathered from various sources. These are the total cost of the released Bible. One New Testament Bible cost Rs. 40 in printing.

Rev. Ginkhankap, B.A., M. Th., began the New Testament translation in May 2006. The same translator is preparing to carry out the next herculean task for another five or six years.

Women burn effigy of Churachandpur DC

CHURACHANDPUR – Following the boycott of deputy commissioner of Churachandpur, Shyam Lal Poonia by Thaduo-Kuki Students’ Union (TKSU), there were also strong protests today morning (14-08-2018) against the DC by women folks which were held at two main intersections leading to the DC office approach road.
The protestors used placards that read ‘Shyam Lal Poonia, who are you to object Kuki Inpi Manipur?’, ‘Remove Shyam Lal Poonia from Churachandpur’, ‘Shyam Lal Poonia do not play with the sentiment of Kuki’ amongst others.
Though the DC failed to turn up at his office due to other official engagements, the protesters burned an effigy of him at the protest site shouting slogans. The protestors said that the agitation for removal of the DC will continue and will be intensified if the need arises.
It may be mentioned that TKSU boycotted the DC after he conducted cleanliness drives at different government offices during the 24-hour total shutdown called by Kuki Inpi Manipur last week. TKSU claimed that the DC disregarded the Kuki and their sentiments and is incompetent. The students’ union also demanded the removal of the DC from the district. ~ Imphal Free Press

ZUF to flash out NSCN-IM cadres from Zeliangrong areas

MANIPUR – “There was a gun fight on 7th August, 2018 at around 7pm at Khumji-II (Lukhambi) near Longmai Village (Noney between the NSCN-IM in which a former NSCN-K cadre who was defected to NSCN-IM group namely Mr. Gaibungpou @ Abung, Rajo Peyu was killed. The NSCN-IM cadres who are stationing in the village have been creating lot of problems and cause insecurity for the people,” said a press statement issued and signed by A. Dangmei, Secretary,  Information & Publicity of the Zeliangrong United Front (ZUF) on August 10, 2018.

According to the statement the Hebron Camp had deputed so called Special Task Force (STF) numbering around 40 to assists the stationed cadres in carrying out maximum anti-social activities in Zeliangrong areas. They have been involving in extortion of huge amount of money from different companies and agencies that are executing mega projects, imposing a huge amount of illegal tax from all vehicles plying on the National High Way – 37 and collecting as tax from the hard money of the general public in the name of Naga political movement.

“The huge amount of money collected in the name of pursuing the Naga political movement are using in construction of multiple gigantic building, luxurious houses, buying hectares of land in different cities of the country, purchasing costly and luxurious vehicles, accumulating wealth and spending on luxurious things. The culture of lies and deceiving the innocent people by the NSCN-IM for so many years in now intolerable therefore, the ZUF have decided to flash out the NSCN-IM from the Zeliangrong areas so as to keep the Zeliangrong from the bondage of the NSCN-IM,” as mentioned in the press statement.

The old habit and unpopular tactics of the NSCN-IM accusing the ZUF of colluding with the Indian security forces particularly Assam Rifles in order to cover up their defeat and weaknesses whenever they suffered miserably is now well known by the general public as a proverbial goes “you can fool all the people sometime but you cannot fool all the people all the time”.

It further states that the wild imagination and baseless allegation of the NSCN-IM that UNLF supply AK-47 rifles to ZUF or fabricated story of Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) shows their complete desperation. The NSCN-IM misusing the Naga political movement with their cheap propaganda just for their own convenient and selfish gain have now exposed in the open when there is no sign of solution even after negotiation for more than 20 years.

The ZUF extends revolutionary arm to all the Zeliangrong cadres who are by mistake served in the NSCN-IM to quit and return to the mainstream to avoid any kind of confrontation among the Zeliangrong brothers. Time has come for the Zeliangrong brothers to assert your zeal, display courage and God gifted wisdom to the NSCN-IM that “you cannot be misused” any longer for valueless cause. The NSCN-IM leaderships deputing “Zeliangrong” to fight “Zeliangrong” is despicable. Such policy of the NSCN-IM is nothing but a desperate effort to sow seed of distrust among the Zeliangrong of which will be a futile exercise.

“The NSCN-IM leadership deputed non Zeliangrong and selective people to gather money which are collected from the various sources by NSCN-IM Zeliangrong cadres but at the time of confrontation and fighting the leadership of the NSCN-IM deputed Zeliangrong cadres which shows the worthlessness to get benefit but fit to die a worthless dead. The ZUF is inconsolable for all those precious lives of Zeliangrong people who had lost their life due to divisive policy of the NSCN-IM therefore, it is not too late to realize the deceiving policy of the NSCN-IM,” the statement added.
