Interview: David Tusing

A DUBAI-based journo, who happens to be from Lamka town of Manipur’s Churachandpur district, has done a remarkable job during the coronavirus crisis. This unsung hero has rendered selfless services by arranging the repatriation flights for more than 300 North East Indians stranded in Dubai (United Arab Emirates) while the world is battling with Covid-19 Pandemic.

The first ever chartered flight ‘Fly Dubai’ with 189 passengers from Dubai to Guwahati, Assam took place on July 3, 2020.

The second chartered flight ‘Indigo’ with 171 passengers from Dubai to Guwahati took place on July 23, 2020. Each flight ticket costs over Rs 30K. Then, how much would it cost for 300+ passengers?

The man behind this mission is David Lalzakham Tusing, a journalist and editor in Dubai City.

Here are excerpts from the interview with Mr Bruce K. Thangkhal, Joint Editor, Zogam Today.

Zogam Today (ZT): Hello Mr David, we appreciate your work in Dubai. Can we have a talk?

David Tusing (DT) : Thank you. It will be my pleasure.

ZT: Can you share us about yourself?

DT: I was born in Hill Town, Churachandpur. I am the middle child with 4 other siblings. Growing up, my father owned a chain of book stores called Book Centre as well as a printing press, L&R Printing Press. My mother was a housewife who was deeply involved in social work and church activities.

ZT: Where did you complete your high school?

DT: I was one of the first ever students of Lapuithluaii Foundation School. Although I moved schools a lot, I eventually came back to Foundation School and finished my Class 10 there.

ZT: What was your childhood dream?

DT: I was a loner growing up and was often bullied and made fun of at school because I was different. So I found comfort in books. I read a lot. Also, since my dad owned book stores, I would sit all day at the shop and read and read. That’s why, ever since I was a young boy, I wanted to be a writer.

ZT: Where did you complete your Graduation and PG?

DT: When I finished my Class 10 after two attempts (I failed the first time), I went to Kotagiri, a small hill station in The Nilgiris, Tamil Nadu, about an hour’s drive from Ooty. I did my Class 11 and 12 there. Then, upon graduation, I went to Mysore to do my Bachelor’s in Journalism. After that, I came to Bangalore to do my Master’s Degree in Media Studies.

ZT: What's your job at present?

DT: After 15 years working with different newspapers, I have decided to go freelance. So I am currently a free agent, contributing for different newspapers and magazines.

ZT: Which beat are you dealing?

DT: Ever since I started in journalism, I have been focused on lifestyle and entertainment. And that’s the beat I have been doing for the last 15 years. I have however also written on various topics outside of my main interest.

ZT: How do you landed in Dubai?

DT: While I was studying in Bangalore, I was freelancing for a newspaper in Dubai called Emirates Today. They were very impressed with my work and offered me a job. That’s how I landed in Dubai in 2006.

ZT: How do you get internship with CNN in London? Wasn't there an opportunity to work with CNN after your internship?

DT: I won a global journalism award in 2004 called the Ibda’a Media Students Award, organized by the Dubai Media City. I competed against more than 80 journalism students from around the world to win the title.  My prize was an internship with CNN International in London, with all expenses paid for by Dubai Media City.

No, I did not work at CNN after the internship because the UK has strict rules about residency visas for non UK citizens and it was too complicated to pursue.

ZT: What was your first job in Dubai?

DT: I came to Dubai in 2006 and worked as Features Writer with Emirates Today, an English daily that is no longer in publication.

ZT: How long have you been working in Dubai?

DT: I’ve been in Dubai now for 14 years.

ZT: Isn't Dubai expensive? How do you balance your life?

DT: Yes, Dubai is expensive. But since I’ve been here for so many years, I’ve learned how to balance things.

ZT: We heard that you did a commendable work in helping many Indians, especially the North East Indians, to reach home safely from Dubai? How do you do that?

DT: Thank you. I was only a small part of a group of volunteers who came together to help our stranded people go home.

When the Lockdowns began in March, many UAE residents who’ve lost their jobs could not go home. And as the lockdowns extended, they were running out of money.

I am quite active on Twitter and someone sent me a tweet asking of I could help them. That’s how it all started for me. I was just sitting at home and watching Netflix. I thought it might be better if I did something in my free time.

ZT: How many North East Indians have been helped during the global pandemic?

DT: Honestly, I have lost count and I never counted. We've repatriated two full flights to Guwahati. I’ve also been involved with a number of groups and charities who were active during the lockdowns. There have also been situations when we’ve received distress calls, from people who cannot pay their rent or have food to eat, and we’ve been able to find ways around that.

ZT:  During the repatriation of overseas Indians, some said there is no Indian flights availabe for the North East states. What do you think?

DT: Absolutely. The North East region continues to be ignored. And in our time of need, no one was there to look out for us. Other states like Kerala had multiple flights and communities who came together to help their people. For the North East, there were none.

ZT: How can we improve/encourage the NE people when facing this kind of situations? How can we collectively work?

DT: We need to create a platform or some form of social organization that can be the one source of help in situations such as the global pandemic. We’ve been thinking about this and will probably work on setting up one.

ZT:  What kind of compliments have you received?

DT: Just lots of good wishes and thanks.

ZT: When was the campaign for Repatriation Flights began?

DT: I had lots of co-volunteers without whom I couldn’t have done any of what we did. I had leaders from the Mizo, Eimi and Tangkhul communities who were part of my core group.

ZT: You broke a record in Mysore University. Can you share us?

DT: Thank you. I did my Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism in Mysore. It’s a three-year course. Upon graduation, at the valedictory, they award gold medals to the highest scorers in each subject, and I won for Journalism. It was quite an achievement as there are more than 200 institutions under Mysore University.

ZT:  Is there any possibility for North East people to work in Dubai?

DT: Of course. There are many from the North East working here in Dubai.

ZT: You may heard "Racial discrimination" against the North East people in India. What is your reaction?

DT: Yes, I have, and have been a victim many times, back in India and many places around the world I’ve travelled to. Racism is mostly due to ignorance and the best way to tackle it is to calmly and firmly try to explain to the perpetrator why what they’re saying or doing is hurtful. Education is key.

ZT: How can we make Manipur a better state?

DT: Corruption is the root cause of many of our problems. But also, apathy from our political leaders who are not in it for the people they represent but for themselves. If we start voting for leaders who will take care of us as a people, we will go a long way. We desperately need real leaders.

ZT: What example can we draw from Dubai?

DT: Dubai is known for its vision. Sure, the discovery of oil changed the lives of people forever. But it is how they’ve used that oil money to transform their city that’s really inspiring. There is a lesson there for everyone.

ZT: How do you see us -- local dailies and journalists? Any suggestion?

DT: We still have a long way to go in terms of real journalism. True journalism is to serve the public, to give them an unbiased and unfettered picture of the world around them. That also includes asking tough questions and exposing the truth, no matter how uncomfortable or sometimes dangerous. We are yet to get to that point in Lamka. The risks are just too high, and no one’s willing to take them yet.

ZT: Who inspired you to take up this challenges, Repatriation Mission?

DT: My mother. Growing up, she’d always taught us that the more we give, the more we receive. She spent her life giving and giving. I probably got it from her.

ZT: Is there any bitter moment which you won't simply forget?

DT: There were many hardships and there were many days I had to to just switch off my phone because it was becoming too much to handle. The stories were all heartbreaking and that was the only thing that kept me going.

ZT: What's your plan?

DT: I would like to come back to Churachandpur, own a little farm, eat off the land and read lots and lots of books the whole day. Jokes aside, I’d like to continue my social work and turn it into something big. Let’s see.

ZT:  What do you like to convey to our readers?

DT: I still see a lot of the new generation stuck in their old ways, too comfortable to be where they are. We need to dream bigger and aim higher. There is nothing we cannot do if we try. There is no place in the world we cannot conquer.

ZT: Thank you for sparing your valuable time.

DT: Thank you for the opportunity.

Interview: Makeup artist Jacob Zou

In an exclusive chat with Zogam Today, Jacob Zou narrated how he became a professional makeup artist. "We even didn't have rice to cook. Then I borrowed fishing net from our neighbour and went for fishing with my siblings. We keep on fishing till late night..."

Here are the excerpts from the chat between Mr Jacob Zou and Mr Bruce K. Thangkhal, Joint Editor, Zogam Today.

ZT: We appreciate you that you started a beauty institute?

JZ:  Thank you. I have started a small beauty studio only, which is a makeup training institute and a studio.

ZT: What is the name of your insitute?

JZ:  Jacob Zou Beauty Institute.

ZT: Can you tell us about yourself?

JZ: Myself is Jacob Zou. I have three brothers and three sisters. I'm the sixth among the seven siblings. My beloved dad (Khupzalal Phiamphu), was a carpenter by profession. He left us for heavenly abode on Dec 24, 2012. My beloved mom (M. Niangneikim) is a small businesswoman. We live in Muizol village, in Sangaikot Sub-division, Churachandpur, Manipur.

ZT: How did your family live?

JZ: After my daddy left us, our livelihood became so hard. It was really difficult even to get two square meals in a day. Then my mom started a small business. By God's grace, my mom sustained our lives.

ZT: How old are you now?

JZ: I am 22. My birthday falls on May 4th!

ZT: When did you started this institute?

JZ: I started the construction of my studio in the first week of August. We completed on August 18th and was inaugurated on the next day.  Then class started on August 20th.

ZT: What about the course and its fee?

JZ: It's a two-month crash course. The fee is Rs 10K only, which can be paid in two instalments. I can say the course is 100% practicals. We also had theory class before starting the practicals. Basic theory is necessary so that trainees can learn quickly.

ZT: What type of equipments/tools used in your studio?

JZ: As it's all about makeup studio, we used everything that is related to makeup tools and brushes, etc.

ZT: Where is your institute located?

JZ: Tuibuong Khopi Veng, Opposite Thangkhal Baptist Church, Near MS Little Angel.

ZT: Where did you learnt Makeup?

JZ:  We, our family, shifted to Imphal and stayed in a rented house, when I was in 6th standard. I came to experienced the city life, as well as I came to know the son of our houseowner was a professional makeup artist and a renowned  fashion designer. I was so lucky to say that he understand my burning passion in makeup and he trained me like his beloved kid. So I gained knowledge and skills of makeup from him. He was my great mentor, who is a godfather to me. I started working under him as assistant when I was reading 9th standard. I have experienced in makepup for 6 years now.

ZT: What was your specialization area?

JZ: I am specialized in all makeup looks.

ZT: What is Makeup all about?

JZ:  From my own experiences, I can say that makeup is an art of making a person more beautiful with positive thoughts.

ZT: Who can join the course?

JZ:  It's open for everybody. There is no restriction whether gay, homo, or tomboy, etc. Every one is welcome if he/she has a soul thrill of makeup.

ZT: What was your childhood dream?

JZ: In my childhood days, I didn't have constant dream. My dream changes according to my moods.  When I saw a navy I want to become a navy, when I saw doctors I want to be a doctor.

ZT: Where did you studied?

JZ: I've completed Class X from Don Bosco High School, Imphal in 2016, and Class XII (Arts) from CC Hr Sec School, Imphal in 2019.

ZT: In what division?

JZ: Both Class X and XII in Second Division only.

ZT: Did you continue your studies?

JZ: I am currently pursuing BA (2nd sem) in Modern College, Imphal.

ZT: What prompts you to start this institute?

JZ: To give the best training to others about what I learned for the past many years.

ZT: How much have you spend on your studio?

JZ: Approximately 2.4 lakhs till now.

ZT: When is the next batch starting?

JZ: Admission for the Second Batch  is going on. Class will resume on October 20.

ZT: What are the class timings?

JZ: We took class only in the morningshift  from 7:30am -10:00am.

ZT: What is your favourite colour?

JZ: Green

ZT: What is your hobby?

JZ: Practicing makeup on my face.

ZT: Who is your favourite person?

JZ: My trainer Kumarjit Laishram, who has inspired me alot.

ZT: Who is your favourite actor?

JZ: Bollywood filmstar Kangana Ranaut is my favourite. Her fashion is amazing, her inner beauty, confident, etc. Above all, she is a self-made star that's why I love her the most.

ZT:  Any makeup asignments in films and albums?

JZ: Yes, I did makeups in Thadou-Kuki music albums mostly directed by Mr M. Paoneo Haokip, namely, "Nang Ka Ngaina" (which crossed million views), "Honey Moon", and Lhangvum Khat A", which has crossed 100k views in 24 hours soon after uploaded. I also did makeups in albums like Dai Lou Ding, Nanga Kahiye, and documentary film Anglo-Kuki War (1917-1919).

ZT: Which is the most satisfying makeup you did so far?

JZ: I think I did my best in the Anglo Kuki War, a documentary film, last year in Henglep. This was my first "wounds" makeup, the look was so natural. Many of us were amazedI I received lots of appreciations.

ZT: Are you also good in hair styles?

JZ: Some how but not as  a professional.

ZT: What type of people need makeup? Do a normal person need?

JZ: Of course, we can do every day makeup, especially when we are about to go outside. But don't do heavy makeup.

ZT: Do you think the people of Lamka town is "beauty conscious"?

JZ: Yes, everyone is hunting for beauty knowhow person. I think our people today have changed their mindsets. They understand better than before.

ZT: Some said you got awards. Can you share us?

JZ:  I received Zolengthe Multi-Academic Award 2019 as an Outstanding Makeup Artist.

ZT: Can you share some of your professional experiences?

JZ: I worked in the following:

---- as Head Character Makeup Director in the Anglo Kuki War (1917-1919) documentary film.

---- as Head Makeup Director of the Models in the Sangai Festival 2019 Fashion Show (on Nov 29).

----  as Assistant Makeup Director of the Models in the Kumarjit Fashion Show at the Sangai Festival 2019 (on Nov 30)

---- as Makeup Artist in Manipur Fashion Rendivous first edition 2014.

----  as Makeup Artist in Manipur Fashion Rendivous second edition 2015.

----  as Makeup Artist in Manipur Fashion Week 2018.

----  as Makeup Artist in Kumarjit Fashion Show Present 2019 (Organised by Radiant Group).

ZT: You've reached this stage. To whom do you credit?

JZ: Some how my dream comes true now. It's all because of the love and support I got from my family. The unceasing supports from my mom, who prayed for us every day and night. My sister, Naomi, who is my second mom because she took care of us. She is the main source of our income, next to my mom. She take all the family responsibilities. Both worked so hard for us. They sacrificed for our life so much, I won't forget in my life. I owe them to due respect and treat them the best from me, until my last breath.

I am grateful and indebted to my guru Kumarjit Laishram, who lovingly brought me into the World of Makeup. Without him, I won't be here today. I prayed for his blessings.

Last but not the least, special thanks goes to all my sweet friends who always stood by me through thick and thin.

ZT: Do you have any incident which lingers in your mind?

JZ: I can't forget one incident when I was in 9th standard. It was a rainy day, there was flood everywhere in Imphal. We cannot go anywhere due to the floood. It was off season for my mom's business, so we faced financial problem in our family. We even didn't have rice to cook. Then I borrowed fishing net from our neighbour and went for fishing with my siblings. We keep on fishing till late night so that we can have for dinner. It was very difficult but there were no choice either. I can't explain what I felt at that time, but i didn't lost hope for my future.

ZT: What is your future plan?

JZ: To have a healthy family. Also to give my best to my mom till her last breath.

ZT: What do you want to convey to the readers?

JZ: Believe yourself follow what your heart desires no matters how hard it will be. Don't forget to grab the opportunity which comes only once in lifetime.

ZT: Thank you for sparing your time. Wishing you all the best in your future endeavour.

JZ: Thank you very much for giving me such a big opportunity. May God bless Zogam Today and staff, more and more.

Who is Zamminlun Singson?

A VILLAGE boy from India's far northeast state Manipur has won an International Artist Grand Competition recently.

His painting, the 'Peaceful Smile' was sold out, at Rs.3,74,688.67.

The news shocked all over India and the netizens started buzzing: "Who is he?"

This self-taught artist have Been declared as the "Winner of the 2020 International Artist Grand Prize Competition" by the ART Revolution Taipei-2020 in Taiwan.

Around 5000 artitsts from 82 different countries participated in the exhibition from 27-30 August 2020.

He loves art since childhood and is passionate about hyperrealism sketches.

Art plays an important role in his life in overcoming any problems or stress. His works do not showcase monotonous themes. His works are full of vibrant themes and showcase a variety of aspects of everyday life.

His inspiration comes from his observations from day to day events including anything which moves his heart and touches the strings of his soul.

The artist himself admires the patience needed behind a realistic art work and loves to work patiently on each and every detail.

His main aim as an artist is to reach out to people through his art works and bring a smile on their faces and share the joy he receives while working on his artworks with his audience, cause to him the process of making an artwork is as important as  the finished piece of art.

From a small hamlet to international cities, his paintings/drawings (art) travelled worldwide surpassing around 5000 competitors from across the globe.

Three of his paintings -- The Peaceful Smile,  The Inquisitive Eye, and The Fiorenza -- have been selected in the recently concluded art exhibition in Taipei.

One sold out at Rs 7.4 lacs, and the other got an international grand prize.

Let us see what is inside these arts.

1. THE PEACEFUL SMILE

Title: Peaceful Smile

Medium: Pencil on paper

Size: 73cm x 53 cm

Time taken: 70 hours

This was sold at Rs. 3,74,688.67!

Description:

This sketch depicts the happy and energizing youthful smile of the girl, who is seen playfully smiling as water is being splashed on her face. With wet face and water dripping all over, she is enjoying the moment and cherishing it as she gives her most vibrant smile showing her pearly whites.

The artist skillfully portrays the intricacies of a happy girl with a peaceful smile. The girl is seen looking at someone with playfulness in her eyes as she smiles.

Happiness which is a very broad spectrum for humans as each one finds their happiness in different ways so is the girl here happily smiling with wet face.

Thus, the artist leaves the space open for his audience who can then come up with their own assumptions and conclusions not restricting them to narrow done their thinking.

2. THE INQUISITIVE EYE

Title: The Inquisitive Eye

Medium:  Pencil on paper

Size:  77cm x 65 cm

Time taken:  80 hours

Description:

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and it is shown wonderfully in this pencil sketch of the artist. As he sketches the minute details of the eye and makes the audience wonder what the eye is seeing and looking at, giving them a chance to look at the sketch and come up with their own imaginations and views.

"The eyes are the mirror of the soul and reflect everything that seems to be hidden; and like a mirror, they also reflect the person looking into them." - Paulo Coelho.

The artist beautifully demonstrates the peeking eye which is in focus and is looking at the world outside with wonder.

Given to the artist commendable skills one can see the intricate details including the eye lashes and the pupil. So real it seems that one can look at it and find the eye looking back at them, watching them.

3. THE FIORENZA

Title:  Fiorenza (old italian)

Medium: Pencil on paper

Size:  77cm x 60 cm

Time taken:  80 hours

This won the "2020 International Artist Grand Prize Competition" in the recently concluded ART Revolution Taipei-2020.

Description:

A beautiful illustration of a young maiden looking with a very calm and composed, poised grace as delicate as a flower and as fierce as the blazing fire.

The artist skillfully portrays the girl with a wet face and water droplets slowly dripping from her forehead to her hand on which she rests her face gazing with a seductive composure where she can be seen with a slight mocking gaze as her eyes highlight the slight smirk which is hidden in her expression.

The artist beautifully demonstrates the entire face with a very even and real description of the actual real features and not animating the portrait. From the beautiful face to the glossy hair with little strands over her face as she is wet with water dripping all over her.

This 23-year-old artist Singson is now planning to startup his own "Art Studio" in Lamka town, Churachandpur. He want to create awareness about "hyperrealistic arts".

He participated in the following art exhibitions:

1. National level "Passion Explosion" at Artizen Gallery, ITO, New Delhi 2019.

2. National level "Art n Art" at Artizen Gallery, ITO, New Delhi. 1st Prize Winner of the year 2019 Art n Art (public voting).

3. Art Exhibition at North East Festival at IGNCA 2019.

4. World Indegenous Day, Indira Gandhi National Centre for Arts 2019.

5. Art Exibition at GOA (Entertainment Society of Goa) 2020.

7. Spandan Global: Indo Singapore Art Festival, Singapore, April 17-21 2020, and

8. ART Revolution Taipei 2020 - Taiwan, May 22-25, 2020.
