Casting Nets of Hope: A Morning with a Father-Son Fishing Duo in Kanyakumari

“Some went down to the sea in ships, doing business on the mighty waters;
they saw the deeds of the Lord, his wondrous works in the deep.”
~ Psalm 107:23-24 (NRSV)

EARLY this morning -- 24.10.'24, we visited the Sunrise Viewpoint in Kanyakumari, joining a large crowd eagerly awaiting the sunrise. After over an hour of waiting, the weather took a disappointing turn -- clouds rolled in, obscuring the view. Disheartened and subdued, we decided to leave...

On our way back, we passed by an open fish market bustling with activity. Fishermen and potential buyers haggled over prices, their animated conversations filling the air. We lingered there for a while, observing the variety of fish on display -- Some species I had never seen before. Women sat with large pans, showcasing their catch, while others brought in fresh fish of varying sizes. These were the fruits of their hard work throughout the night, spent battling the seas unpredictability.

While sipping tea from a roadside vendor, an older man and his young companion, likely his son in his early twenties, joined us. The older man looked weary, his face lined with exhaustion, while the younger one appeared somber. Through the tea seller, who kindly translated their words, I learned that their night at sea had been unfruitful -- they had caught only a few fish. Their disappointment was palpable. The old man remarked, “We depend on luck. Sometimes, we catch plenty; other times, we return empty-handed.”

The old man shared that they rest during the day and begin their work again around 6 p.m., returning to the same spot by the next morning, around 6 or 7 a.m. They spend over 12 hours on the vast waters, often braving strong waves and tempests. Their lives are marked by hardship and struggle, sustained by the care and blessings of heaven.

As he finished his cup of tea, the young man shared that he had not attended school during his teenage years, as he chose to help his father with fishing. He mentioned having two younger sisters who are currently studying in high school, with their mother staying home to care for them while he and his father are out at sea.

We bid them goodbye after I paid for the tea (three cups for all of us). Initially, they hesitated to acknowledge it. However, the tea vendor explained that it was a gesture of goodwill and good wishes for their next trip. Upon hearing this, they accepted it graciously. The father, moved by the gesture, immediately pulled out a fish and tried to give it to me!

Here are some photographs you might enjoy.
As you look through them,
let your imagination take you to the heart of the scene.
Take a moment to explore and enjoy!
THE ROAD ENDS!

From the fishermen father and son, we learn resilience,
A life of hard work shaped by persistence and patience.
Their bond reflects sacrifice and shared devotion,
A reminder to face life’s waves with unwavering motion.

🙏 May God bless this father-son duo! 🙏

Traditional Banana Leaf Meal from Kanyakumari

A delicious South Indian banana leaf meal from Kanyakumari, featuring soft rice, lentil curry, vegetable sides, and crisp papad.

This meal is a true taste of Kanyakumari, served traditionally on a fresh green banana leaf. At the centre is soft, freshly cooked white rice, warm and comforting. A ladle of yellow lentil curry gently flows over the rice, rich with turmeric, mustard seeds, and curry leaves. It is mild, earthy, and deeply satisfying.

Here, the locals are taking food in traditional ways, passed down through generations, and these methods are not only cultural but also highly nutritious. Eating on a banana leaf, using the hand, and combining rice with lentils and vegetables helps digestion and provides a balanced meal for the body.

On the top side of the leaf are carefully placed accompaniments. A dark, slow-cooked vegetable preparation sits to the left, rich and slightly spicy, full of local flavour. Next to it is a dry vegetable curry, lightly spiced and cooked just right, retaining its natural taste. Crisp papad rests on the side, adding a light crunch to every bite.

Each element is simple, yet thoughtfully prepared. There is no excess—only balance. The food feels clean, homely, and honest. Eaten by hand, as tradition invites, the flavours come together beautifully.

Served in Kanyakumari, this meal is not just food—it is comfort on a leaf. It is wonderfully tasty, quietly impressive, and deeply rooted in Tamil tradition.

Traditional South Indian Meals in Nagercoil Hotel | Kanykumari

This meal is a celebration of South Indian flavours, served fresh and neatly arranged on a shining steel plate. At the centre sits a generous mound of steamed white rice, soft, fluffy, and perfectly cooked—the heart of the meal.

Around the rice are small bowls filled with a variety of dishes, each adding its own taste and colour. A rich red curry, likely a spicy vegetable or tomato-based gravy, brings warmth and depth. Alongside it is a comforting bowl of sambar, gently spiced and full of vegetables, followed by a tangy rasam that is light, soothing, and full of flavour.

The meal also includes creamy curd, cool and refreshing, offering balance to the spices. Crisp papad rests on the side, adding a pleasant crunch. There are well-cooked vegetable sides—yellow potato curry, green vegetable stir-fry, and a mildly spiced mixed vegetable preparation—each simple yet delicious.

Small portions of fried snacks add texture and indulgence, while the careful presentation shows attention to detail and respect for tradition.

Served in a hotel in Nagercoil, this meal feels homely yet special. It is wholesome, satisfying, and deeply comforting. Every bite tastes fresh, honest, and lovingly prepared—truly wonderful and very tasty.

Concordia Theological Seminary: History & Mission in India

Concordia Theological Seminary (CTS), located in Nagercoil of Kanyakumari district, was established by the Lutheran Church–Missouri Synod (LCMS) on 8 September 1924. It is recognised as the first Confessional Lutheran Seminary in South Asia.

According to the official website of Concordia Theological Seminary, the LCMS was founded in 1847 in America by Saxon and other German immigrants. They formed the church to practise and follow Confessional Lutheran beliefs. In 1894, the LCMS began its mission work in India through the Missouri Evangelical Lutheran India Mission (MELIM). The first missionaries—Karl Gustave Theodore Naether, Franz E. Mohn, Reinhold P. Freche, and George O. Kellerbauer—arrived in India on 20 January 1895.

During the First World War, the missionaries realised the need to train more Indian pastors. In 1917, they started a one-year catechist training programme in Nagercoil to give basic theological education to local people. In the 1920s, the mission work grew rapidly, and catechist classes were opened in Ambur and Trivandrum. However, the missionaries felt that this training was not enough to meet the growing needs. Therefore, they planned to establish a full Theological Seminary, similar to the Concordia Seminary in St. Louis, USA.

ZOMI COUNCIL explores ORGANIC FARMING

"Zomi Council Delegation Discusses Organic Farming and Tribal Affairs in New Delhi

Date: 23/10/2024

On October 22, 2024, Zomi Council delegation, consisting of Chairman Pu Vumsuan Naulak and Vice Chairman Pu Khamlianlal, met with an agricultural scientist in New Delhi. They explored the potential for expanding commercial organic farming across the vast landscapes of their homeland and discussed market opportunities. Further discussions will be held subsequently.

In the afternoon, the same delegation met with Pu Letpau, Minister of Tribal Affairs & Hills, Manipur, at his residence. They reviewed the outcomes of recent discussions between Manipur's ministers, MLAs, and representatives from the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), particularly regarding the SA demand. Other key topics included public concerns such as the demand for an airport, plans for the Autonomous District Council (ADC) elections, and tribal development funds. The minister also highlighted objections from former ex MDC chairmen and members regarding the NPF's proposal to nominate interim members for the District Councils while awaiting regular elections, expressing the need to hear various stakeholders' opinions.

On October 23, 2024, the Zomi Council Chairman called on the President of KIM in New Delhi to discuss mutual interests and potential cooperation for the future.
