Gurgaon city buses to get CCTV cameras

Gurgaon, May 14, 2013 [IANS]: All Gurgaon city buses will be fitted with CCTV cameras and 100 new buses, including 50 air-conditioned ones, will soon join the fleet, an official said in Gurgaon on Sunday. Bus terminals across Haryana will also get electronic eyes for security. Director General of State Transport Arun Kumar told reporters that an air-conditioned bus stand will be constructed in Sector 29 in Gurgaon to cater to city bus service and luxury Volvo buses. CCTV cameras will be introduced at a cost of Rs. 4 crore to prevent mischief in moving vehicles and bus terminals, he said. He said CCTV cameras will also be fitted in city buses in Faridabad. Latest GPS system would also be introduced in the city buses in Gurgaon and Faridabad. The intra-city buses in Gurgaon carry about one lakh passengers daily, covering 22,000 km and collecting Rs.4.5-5 lakh fare. In the next four months, Gurgaon city bus fleet will get an additional 150 vehicles and out of these 50 would be air-conditioned, Kumar said. The official said five super luxury Volvo buses would be added to the fleet of the existing 15 buses on the Gurgaon-Chandigarh route. An inter-state bus terminal will also be constructed at Rajiv Chowk near the Delhi-Jaipur highway, he said.

Teenaged girl shot dead in Delhi's Munirka area, father suspects role of relative

New Delhi, May 10, 2013 [INDIAN EXPRESS] --- A girl studying in Class XII was shot dead this morning allegedly by a youth in her house in south Delhi with her father alleging that a distant relative, who was stalking her, could be behind it.

The youth entered the house in Budh Vihar in Munirka area, closed the girl's room and pumped bullets into her chest, a senior police official said.

The victim has been identified as Pinki (18), a student of government school in RK Puram Sector 5.

"Her aunt was present in the house when the incident took place. After shooting her, the boy whose identity is yet to be ascertained, fled from the scene," the official said. The victim's aunt tried to chase the youth but he fled from the spot.

Pinki was rushed to Safdarjung Hospital where she was declared brought dead.

The victim's father Pritam said that he suspect one of his relatives to be behind the murder.

"He is a relative of my sister-in-law and my nephew. The person used to call me and threaten that he will kill my daughter. He was following my daughter since she was 13. He was forcing her to marry him," he claimed.

Manipuri girl died, 5 injured in accident in Delhi

New Delhi, May 9, 2013 --- A Manipuri girl died and five men including the auto driver injured when a bus suddenly hit the auto rickshaw from behind on Wednesday night around 10.30 pm here in RK Puram Sector-1. Some passersby rushed them to AIIMS trauma centre (Delhi), where the girl was declared brought dead. The bus driver absconded. Mob vandalized the bus. Except, the auto driver, the other 4 belongs to Manipur. 

 

With the initiative of Kuki Students' Organisation Delhi president, Thangminlen Kipgen, about 50 members of KSOD gathered outside the trauma centre praying for the injured and the girl's family.

25-year-old woman found murdered, husband suspected

Imphal, May 8, 2013 [Hueiyen News Service] --- A 25 years old housewife was found murdered after hitting with a club at Monumphai area near Kondong Lairembi, Moreh. The incident occurred around 2 pm yesterday. The victim has been identified as Nekhohat Kilong, w/o Vijay, a Non Manipuri worker of BRTF presently living at Moreh Ward No 9. There were injuries on the head of the victim. Police have also recovered a blood stained club from near the site where the victim was found. Even though police are yet to identify  the murderer, locals suspect the involvement of her husband. Moreh Police have registered a case over the incident and the body has been deposited at the mortuary of JNIMS for post mortem.

Three Northeast Boys beaten in Delhi

New Delhi, May 7, 2013 [NEH] --- In yet another shocking incident of discrimination against the Northeast people, three Northeast boys has been allegedly beaten up by the landlord and his son on Monday evening.  The father, Adarsh Kumar and his son, Ashish Tokas have been arrested after they allegedly assaulted three Northeast boys with wooden sticks accompanying a group of local people, here in Munirka yesterday. This is the sixth incident reported to NE Helpline this year. 

 According to the three victims, they were thrashed and beaten while they were standing inside the building, after one of them spitted on the ground. The incident occurred at around 3.30 pm yesterday, when one of the victims said that he inhaled a mosquito in his mouth and spitted out immediately on the ground.  When the landlord Adarsh Kumar saw this, he began thrashing them with the help of the local people numbering around 7-10 men with wooden sticks and iron rods.

 Mr Adarsh Kumar owned a flat next to the building where the three victims stayed. "Even our own landlord threatened us with dire consequences if we reported to police," said Roney, one of the victims.

 The three victims Roney (25), Guite (23) and Samson (25) sustained injuries during the physical assault by the locals. The victims were brought to Sardarjung hospital for medical test after the incident with minor injuries. However, Guite said Doctor told him that his eardrum busted and he needs to go for minor operation after some days.

 A case has been registered in Vasant Vihar Police Station under sections 506 (Punishment for criminal intimidation), 323 (Punishment for voluntarily causing hurt), 341 (Punishment for wrongful restraint) and 34 (Acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of IPC (1860).

 The FIR has been successfully lodged only by midnight, after more than 10 hour's pursuance from a bunch of Northeast youngsters, viz. Mr Bruce K. Thangkhal, Media Incharge of NE Helpline, Mr Satminlun Khongsai, General Secretary of Kuki Students' Organisation (KSO) Delhi, Mr Huten Alexandar, General Secretary of Naga Students' Union (NSU) Delhi, Mr David Sukte, Vice President of Zomi Student's Federation (ZSF) Delhi Cell, Mr Thanglenpao, Asst Information Secretary/KSOD, and Mr Timothy Chongthu, Finance Secretary/KSOD. The FIR was lodged at around 12 O'clock last night, when Mr Anil Sharma, Station House Officer, Vasant Vihar Police Station arrived. 

"On hearing incident, I immediately rushed to the spot and call up 100 (PCR Van). The police told us, along with the victims, to come up to the main road where the police awaited. They didn't even come to the spot, where the victims were laying in a pool of blood," said Mr Timothy Chongthu.

 Roney, who works in a call centre, sustained injuries on his head, and his friend Guite, who is doing some IT course, injured on his left ear, which he says, ne need to go for minor operation soon, as told to NE Helpline.  The third victim, Samson, who tried to calm down the angry locales, was injured in his chest and right arm. However, the Safdarjung hospital in its medical report did neither mention grievous nor minor, nor unhurt. Police are waiting for the detail medical report and accordingly sections will be added, police said.

 Ms Stacy, a cousin of Roney, said, "We felt insecure and didn't stay last night at our room. We stayed in our friend's room. We have to vacate our rooms, otherwise, we may be backlash by the locales if they saw us".

 This is not the first incident happened there are so many which goes unreported. In last month April 28, one Northeast boy was allegedly beaten up by the locals in a similar case. When the Northeast boy was passing through a narrow passage in the street, some locals standing beside the road blocked his way with one motorcycle, when he requested them to make ways, he was simply thrashed then and there, he informed NE Helpline yesterday.

The Northeast Student leaders sought the Delhi Police to immediately arrest and punish the persons who accompanied the father-son duo in beating the three Northeast boys on Monday evening. Until and unless the accomplices were caught, they will still continue the same in future, the Northeast Student leaders feared. However, Vasant Vihar Police Station SHO Anil Sharma assured all the possible help to the Northeast people.

Over 300 houses destroyed in CCpur storm

 

 Lamka [Manipur], May 5, 2013 [The Sangai Express]: Three days after a destructive windstorm hit the district, it has been now evident that no part of the district was spared by the spell of triple storms with latest reports indicating that houses destroyed by the storm would be well beyond 300.

On the night of May 1 a strong gale hit the district and a day later, on May 3, a another spell of hailstorm again hit the district causing immense devastation, much more than it was initially assumed.

Addressing the Press at his chamber, ADC Chairman Langkhanpau Guite said over 74 houses were destroyed and at least 69 of them beyond redemption in New Lamka's Khominthang area alone.

The Chairman said 23 houses were destroyed in V Munhoi village, another 4 in Kanan Veng, 34 at New Lamka, 28 at Rengkai, 18 at Lungthul in Thanlon sub-division, 3 in P Sezol under Henglep sub-division along with the community hall, 7 in Suangpek also in Thanlon sub-division, 3 in Kotlian, 12 in Senvon and 11 in Parvachawm both located under Tipaimukh sub-division, 25 or so in Saikot area, 13 in Mission Veng, 14 in Saiton area, 31 in B Vengnom area including a Sunday School and a school at New Boljang, 9 totally and 15 partially damaged at Zenhang Lamka area and a Church at Pherzawl in Tipaimukh sub-division.

He also said that 5 schools; Thenmol JB School, Seilal Veng JB School, Lhangmol JB school, Tuithapi JB School, and Sanglel JB School all run by the ADC were damaged by the triple storms but nevertheless cited that flouting of construction quality norms as one of the main reason for the damage.

'Most of the schools have no iron rods on the pillar or has no pillar at all. The pillar portion were just coloured in a fashion that it appears to be an authentic pillar but without a proper pillar there,' he said adding it would be pertinent for all those involved in constructing such building to hold a soul searching and that similar practices were not repeated in future.He however did not mention any form of penalty that will be initiated against the contractors that flouted the construction norms.

Data available with the District Disaster Management Committee indicated that about 150 houses were completely devastated while about two times the number to be partially damaged. The number however would continue to increase as reports from some interior area were still awaited.

Three relief camps were set-up to accommodate the families whose belonging are completely shattered. Two of the camps are located at Khominthang with the local MDC and Executive Member ADC and incharge of Education M Gouzamang Guite bearing all the burden of running the camp. Another camp was set-up at B Vengnom by MDC Khaipao.

At PT Sports complex, one of the relief camps that housed about 31 families 23 year-old mother of one slept on a hostel bed her leg bandaged for the wound she received while trying to flee from her falling house. Recalling her ordeal she said she was cooking when the hailstorm struck early yesterday.

Suddenly their houses collapsed and its roof blown-off. While trying to escape, the cooking oil she had heated to fry her morning meal pour-on her leg causing her immense injury. It was only after the intervention of the local MDC that she was taken to hospital for treatment.

'The loss we have suffered made me numb and careless; I could not afford to care myself. All my concern was for my baby boy who turned one and a half years old. He has fever and how on earth could I care to get myself admitted at the hospital,' she told The Sangai Express today. When asked about her future plans, all she could said was 'I don't know.' Her husband a daily labourer she said was working to assemble something their family could restart their life with out of the rumble from from their devastated and rented house.

She was treated of her wound today with the insistence of the local MDC. When contacted the MDC also in-charge of Education said he has rope in the services of SSPP, the Paite Students' Welfare Association to help the victims out but will bear all the expenses himself. He said he had instructed the SSPP to collect the data of all those kids in the relief camps who lost their text book and assured that he will arrange a new set of books for all of them. 'The calamity is beyond our control but I want my people to be assured that I will left no stone unturned to restore their life and education with whatever means that was available before me,' he said with a matter of serenity.

The eldest son of Health minister Phungzathang Tonsing, Khanthang Tonsing and his sister have also conducted a spot visit of about a hundred houses destroyed by the storm yesterday and bearing the heavy rain. The Deputy Commissioner and Chairperson the district disaster management committee Jacintha Lazarus is out of stationed attending a training course at Mussourie but we are trying our best to fill the gap and present a reasonable response to the calamity, said an official.

It is also learnt that MLAs from the district including TN Haokip, Vungzagin Valte and Ginsuanhau have rushed to their respective constituencies along with relief materials.

Delhi nursing student loses eye in Mumbai acid attack

Mumbai, May 03, 2013 [Indian Express] ---  A NURSING graduate from Delhi, set to join the Army Medical College in Colaba, Mumbai, as a lieutenant, lost vision in her right eye after an unidentified man threw acid on her, minutes after she arrived at the Bandra railway terminus on Thursday morning. The accused was reportedly travelling in the same train, Delhi-Bandra Garib Rath, as the victim, Preeti Rathi, 25, who was accompanied by her father, Amarsingh Rathi, uncle Vinod Kumar Singh, and aunt Sunita Singh. Preeti has been admitted to the Masina Hospital in Byculla. "The victim has suffered severe internal burns due to inhalation and consumption of acid and has been put on ventilator. She has completely lost vision in her right eye, but her left eye appears to be all right. She remains critical," said Dr R B Dastur, director, Masina Hospital. "I called the Army Medical College and asked for help. But the management said that since Preeti had not officially joined duty, they could not do anything. They told me that she cannot join now," said Vinod Kumar. Preeti's aunt told the police that she saw the attacker at Navsari, Gujarat. "The accused possibly boarded the train at Navsari. Sunita Singh told us that she first saw him at the Navsari railway station with a bottle in his hand. She then spotted him on the platform of three other stations. It appears that he picked his chance after the train reached Mumbai," said B Shirsat, DCP, GRP (Western Railway). According to the police, the attacker was in the same coach (G-2) as Preeti and her family. Vinod Kumar also recalled spotting the accused in the coach early on Thursday morning. "At 5:30 am, I walked to the door to get some fresh air when I saw him standing near the bathroom. He appeared to be 20-22 years old," he said. Amarsingh, a foreman at the Delhi government-run electricity plant Bhakra Beas Management Board, and two other passengers were also injured in the attack. The family is now struggling to pay the medical bill. "The Railways gave us an ex-gratia payment of Rs 5,500. But the hospital has asked to pay Rs 60,000. We had brought only around Rs 20,000 with us, of which more than half has been spent on medicines," said Amarsingh. R--A--P--E “Don’t be an idiot: Don’t blame the victim”

RAPE is a type of sexual assault, which is initiated by one or more persons against another person without that person’s consent. The act may be carried out by physical force, coercion, abuse of authority or with a person who is incapable of valid consent, such as one who is unconscious, incapacitated, or below the legal age of consent. This is what RAPE means.

 

What comes in our mind when we read newspaper reports “a girl is being raped”? Do we blame her dress code, place, time, her characters? But...no matter where, at what time, what she wore or whatever she did – if she said “NO”, it is “RAPE”. Our conceptions and understanding  towards the victims promoted the RAPISTS to have a sense of raping innocent children and women in today’s  society. We are an idiot to blame the victims rather than helping them, which leads the rapist to fulfil his lustful fantasies – to rape again and again, whenever chances come.  Do we raped a baby girl just because of her dress? Do we raped a women just because she is too flirty - loose characters - street girls? Or just because we try ourselves to show off that guys are stronger or braver than women? No..! We are just an IDIOT!

 

It is not a shame at all to report sexual offence, but it is one of the sweetest source to solve the problems and the most preventive measures to avoid RAPE. Many of the children and women in our society hesitate to report to their parents-relatives-elders. We tend to know such incident only when the situation is critical and most of the victims reported as only the last option or knowing herself that she won’t be able to manage her problem. It is believed that rape also happens within a family, husband-wife, friend circles, relatives and in a relationship. We may wonder how “rape” can be happen in life-partner (husband & wife), but once a women say “NO” or if it’s without her consent, it’s a RAPE.

 

Have we ever think how many of our beloved children, sisters and women in our society have had faced such situation which remains unheard where they hid and a­­shamed of to let know their parents and swallowed the pains though it truly hurts them. Here, it is our duty to have a good relationship with parents to daughters to parents. In a situation where daughters trust their parents, they are likely to share the top secrets. If it’s not, parents may not be able to find out the hidden dark side of our dear ones. PAINFUL!

 

When crimes are not publicized, it seems to repeat one after another unnoticed. We all want to stop “rape” but no one will be able to STOP it until and unless if the crime is not reported. It is known that most of the victim reported only when they are in helpless condition, researchers found that women who have been abused or raped tend to hide such­­­­­­­ offences. In such condition the rapist will not QUIT his attitude unless we do something against the rapist. Let us be open, let us not feel shame to stand-up for the TRUTH in order to PREVENT rape.

Lamka town looks 'land of hailstones'

Lamka (Manipur), May 3, 2013 --- A violent windstorm accompanied by rain, rolling thunder and hailstones swept Lamka, the famous and vibrant town of Churachandpur in Manipur on Wednesday (May 1) night. According to reports, numerous school buildings, a church and over hundreds of houses were devastated. Trees and electric poles were uprooted. This is amazing and it is believed to be the first ever havoc happened in the history of Zogam Lamka.

Sarabjit Body to be cremated in Bhikhiwind Friday

Bhikhiwind (Punjab), May 3, 2013 [IANS] --- Indian prisoner Sarabjit Singh, who died in Pakistan early Thursday, will be cremated in his hometown Bhikhiwind in Punjab's border district of Tarn Taran, amid great anger in the town. Sarabjit's family, which was in New Delhi, reached Bhikhiwind, 50 km from Amritsar, by helicopter Thursday evening. Scores of local residents gathered at the helipad to meet them and walked with them to their house. Sarabjit's body was being flown from Lahore to Amritsar on its way to this town, and arrangements were underway for the last rites. A number of leaders are expected to attend the cremation Friday. Angry resident of this town held protests Thursday and kept the entire town shut. Shops and educational institutions also remained closed. Protestors gathered at various places and condemned the "cowardly" act by Pakistani authorities which led to Sarabjit's death. Residents of the town mourned his death and said the Indian and Pakistani governments could have saved him. The town Thursday woke up to receive the sad news of his death in a Lahore hospital. Residents of the town saw celebrations and disappointment within a few hours in June in 2012 when reports first said that the Pakistan government had announced his release. However, in a flip-flop, the Pakistani authorities later clarified that not Sarabjit Singh but another Indian prisoner, Surjeet Singh, was being released. "We were expecting a miracle to happen. We wanted Sarabjit to recover. What the Pakistanis have done is cowardly. He had suffered in their jails for nearly 23 years and now they have murdered him," a visibly upset Bhikhiwind resident Kirpal Singh said as he and some others gathered outside the house of Sarabjit's family. Some residents also gathered outside the local gurdwara and protested against Pakistan. "Residents of the town were hoping and praying that Sarabjit would return in their midst one day. The Pakistani authorities have killed him by conspiracy," another resident, Amrit Kaur, said. Sarabjit, 49, suffered critical head injuries after an unprovoked and sudden assault by other prisoners April 26. Sarabjit was on death row in Pakistan since 1990 after being convicted by Pakistani courts for bomb blasts in Lahore and Multan, which left 14 people dead. Sarabjit's family claimed that he was innocent and was arrested when he crossed over to Pakistan in an inebriated state. Police in Pakistan, however, claimed that Sarabjit Singh was involved in terror strikes.
