The Khongjai Hills (1741–42) Expedition of 1786: A Brief Kuki Historical Account and Kanglei Manipur

"The Khongjai Hills (1741–42) Expedition of 1786: A Brief Kuki Historical Account and Kanglei Manipur"
By:- Dr. TS Haokip
30 March, 2025

Abstract
This article provides a historical account of the Khongjai Hills Expedition of 1786, led by King Chingthangkhompa of Manipur. The expedition was a significant event in the history of the Kuki people, and this article aims to provide a detailed and accurate account of the events surrounding the expedition.

Introduction
The Khongjai Hills Expedition of 1786 was a significant event in the history of the Kuki people. The expedition was led by King Chingthangkhompa of Manipur, who mobilized the whole forces of Manipur to attack the Khongchai villages of the Khongjai Hills (S.N. Parratt, 2: 25–27).

Background
The Khongjai Hills are located to the east of Vangaitang Mountain, along the Tuipui (Tuipi) River valley. The Tuipui River originates from the northern points of the Thanlon ranges and flows north to release its water into the Irang River (Cheitharol).

There were previous interactions between the Khongjais and the Manipur kingdom, including:

An attack by the guru in 1742 (S.N. Parratt, 1: 151, 153)

A visit by the Khongchais to the palace in 1784 (S.N. Parratt, 2:22)

The Expedition
The forces led by King Chingthangkhompa passed through the Kuchu Valley and encountered many Khongjai villages (Cheitharol). From a base camp at the foothills of the Khongjai Hills, they attacked villages including:

Phunchong Yanlam

Khongchai village

Phunchongyon
(Cheitharol)
The king erected a stone pillar at Tuyai Yirok and performed the spear dance in the centre of Khongchai village (Cheitharol).

Aftermath
The Khongjais were subjugated, and many villagers visited the king and paid presents (Cheitharol). Records indicate that the Kukis (Khongjais) settled in large numbers in the area, starting from the south of the Kuchu Valley (Cheitharol).

The term "Khongjai/Khongchai" was derived from the name of the main village attacked, inhabited mainly by the Khongsai king and other Kuki clans (Shaw, 1929: 47).

Conclusion
The Khongjai Hills Expedition of 1786 was a significant event in the history of the Kuki people. It highlights the complex interactions between the Kuki people and the Manipur kingdom. This article aims to provide a detailed and accurate account of these events and contribute to a deeper understanding of Kuki history.

Tracing Human History: From Prehistoric Origins to Writing Systems

Fossil and genetic evidence suggests that anatomically modern humans (Homo sapiens) first appeared around 300,000 years ago in Africa. But the earliest known writing systems, such as cuneiform (Sumerians, ~3,100 BCE) and hieroglyphs (Egyptians, ~3,100 BCE), appeared about 5,000–6,000 years ago. Before this, humans passed down knowledge through oral traditions, which are harder to trace archaeologically. While written records only cover a small fraction of human history, archaeological, genetic, and paleoanthropological research helps us understand prehistoric times

Arambai Tenngol leader demands clarification from NPP state unit president

Imphal, Apr 2: Meitei body Arambai Tenngol chief Korounganba Khuman has demanded an apology and clarification from National Peoples' Party Manipur unit president Yumnam Joykumar for his allegations in a social media post that the outfit attacked Kuki community.

Khuman said "in the midst of your politically oriented conflict, do not sell the land. On May 3, it was 4 pm when AT went to Phougakchao (in Bishnupur district) to save houses engulfed in inferno burnt by armed mob from Churachandpur. Phougakchao is located 10 km from Churachandpur."

"We demand an apology from Joykumar for his remarks on X. He must also clarify if the account is his or if its fake" Khuman added.

Earlier, Joykumar in a post on X said "it’s unfortunate that Mr. N. Biren Singh dragged Late P.A. Sangma’s name into the Manipur crisis via his Twitter and Facebook posts on 31/03/2025. His statement is baffling, as NPP never backed Kukiland. The 2014 video he shared predates the issue, showing his poor grasp of the Meitei-Kuki conflict. Despite ample time, he failed to restore peace."

"The 2014 video of P.A. Sangma is irrelevant to today’s clash. Biren’s queries to NPP President Conrad expose his weak understanding. He claims credit for ILP, but it was the Dy CM from NPP, not BJP, who pushed for it in the delegation meeting" Joykumar said.

"Biren Ji misjudged the Kuki-Meitei conflict’s roots. The Tribal Students’ rally against the High Court’s ST status order for Meiteis was a law-and-order issue he let spiral into communal strife. Why did his govt allow massive rallies, withdraw commandos from Churachandpur, and let groups like Arambai Tengol attack Kukis?" Joykumar added.

"His govt’s failure to protect lives and property fueled this crisis. Biren blames drugs, illegal immigration, deforestation, and power grabs, but who runs the drug trade? Refer to ex-SP Brinda Devi’s exposé. Who let Kuki immigrants from Myanmar settle in Tengnoupal to aid BJP’s Letpao Haokip and SS. Olish’s wins? Jhum cultivation, not Kukis, harms forests. If he means BJP’s deals with Kuki groups, NPP isn’t involved. Conrad’s right—focus on peace, not blame, for Manipur’s future" he added.

Nicole Smith-Ludvik: Fearless Stunt on the Burj Khalifa for Emirates

Nicole Smith-Ludvik, the woman who bravely stood atop the Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest building at 828 meters, as part of an advertisement for Emirates Airlines.
Smith-Ludvik was secured to the pinnacle of the Burj Khalifa, and the shoot adhered to strict safety protocols. To capture the desired footage, an Emirates A380 aircraft flew around the Burj Khalifa 11 times at a speed of 145 knots, which is relatively slow for an A380. The plane maintained a distance of approximately half a mile from the building and was level with its top

The Kiss of Life: A Pulitzer-Winning Photo of Heroic Rescue

This iconic photo, taken by Rocco Morabito in 1967, is called “The Kiss of Life.” It shows two electrical workers, Champion Randall and JD Thompson, atop a power pole. While doing routine maintenance, Champion accidentally touched a low-voltage line, sending over 4,000 volts into his body and causing his heart to stop. (For comparison, an electric chair uses around 2,000 volts.)

Thanks to his safety harness, Champion didn’t fall, and Thompson, who was climbing below, quickly reached him and began mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. Although he couldn’t perform full CPR due to the situation, Thompson kept Champion’s lungs active until he felt a faint pulse. Then he carefully unzipped the harness and carried Champion down the pole on his shoulder.
Once on the ground, Thompson and other workers performed CPR, gradually bringing Champion’s breathing and heartbeat back. Paramedics arrived soon after, and Champion made a full recovery. He survived and lived until 2002, passing away at 64 from heart failure. Thompson is still alive today.
The photo, showing what looks like a life-saving kiss, was widely published and won a Pulitzer Prize in 1968. It beautifully captures the bond between two men who were more than just coworkers—they were true friends.

Visualized: The 4 Billion Year Path of Human Evolution

From Protocells to People: A Visual Journey Through 4 Billion Years of Human Evolution

Life on Earth began with tiny, simple structures known as protocells—primitive forms of life that lacked complex features but set the foundation for everything that came after. Over millions of years, these basic life forms evolved into more complex, multicellular organisms. One of the earliest known examples is Dickinsonia, a soft-bodied creature that existed long before modern animals.

As evolution progressed, new biological features emerged—bilateral symmetry, nervous systems, and early eyesight—leading to the first vertebrates. Fish were the pioneers of this group, dominating the oceans before some species ventured onto land. This transition gave rise to tetrapods, the ancestors of amphibians, reptiles, and ultimately, mammals.

About 200 million years ago, early mammals appeared—small, shrew-like creatures that lived alongside the dinosaurs. Over time, mammals developed defining traits such as fur, mammary glands, and more advanced circulatory systems, allowing them to thrive.

Fast forward to about 7 million years ago, and the first great apes emerged. From this lineage, early humans in the Homo genus evolved, bringing key advancements like walking upright, larger brains, tool-making, language, and fire. These developments set the stage for modern human civilization.

Today, human evolution is shaped not just by natural selection, but by technology and environmental changes. As we continue to advance, the future of our species may be influenced by medicine, genetics, and global adaptation, potentially altering the course of evolution itself.

ZUF calls for observance of 91st Zeliangrong Solidarity Day

DIMAPUR, MARCH 31 (MExN): The Zeliangrong United Front (ZUF) has called upon the Zeliangrong people to observe the 91st Zeliangrong Solidarity Day with "full reverence" at key headquarters across Assam, Nagaland, and Manipur.

The observance marks the historic Chukthoibe/Chukthoibo/Chuksumei solemnization, which took place on April 1, 1934, at Tamenglong District Headquarters, Manipur.

According to ZUF, during this sacred event, "our forefathers performed deep secrecy rituals by sacrificing a pure black dog and cat-both without stripes." The ritual signified "purification, where many priests, elders, and leaders took an oath to forgive and forget all internal feuds and to strengthen the bond of brotherhood among the Zeliangrong people."

"It was firmly resolved that anyone who violated or abolished the oath of allegiance to Chukthoibe-Chuksumei-Chukthoibo would inevitably face the curse of the forefathers," the statement read.

Observances will take place at three key locations: Mount Bhubon/Duilumluang Provincial Headquarters in Assam, Mount Lwangdilwa/Pauna Provincial Headquarters in Nagaland, and Mount Koubru/Kandih Nah Raguang Provincial Headquarters in Manipur.

In honor of "our forefathers' commandments," ZUF has urged all Zeliangrong people "to offer morning prayers before stepping out of their homes as a symbol of unity and integrity among our people."

ZUF chairman S. Kamson stated that "the preamble of ZUF is solely aimed at safeguarding the Zeliangrong people, their land, and resources while promoting and preserving their culture and traditions."

The Front strongly warned against "the sale of land and the issuance of No Objection Certificates (NOCs) to the central or state governments, NGOs, Companies, Private Sectors, or Individuals who are not Zeliangrong origin."

ZUF also reaffirmed its opposition to "seismic projects and the Zeilad Wildlife Sanctuary in D2 and D3," emphasizing that "human settlement must take priority: 'Man is more important than animals.'"

Additionally, ZUF appealed for "the protection of fauna, flora, and rare species." It called for "an immediate halt to destructive fishing practices using electronic machines, inverters, bleaching powder, endrin and other harmful substances."

Furthermore, the Front urged people "to refrain from cutting down trees for business purposes and instead preserve dense forests for a healthier environment."

Sikkim’s first female IPS: Aparajita Rai

Meet IPS Aparajita Rai. Raised in Sikkim, Aparajita faced personal tragedy early on—losing her mother at just 8 years old. But instead of giving in to her pain, she used it as fuel to chase her dreams. Determined to bring change from within the system, she cracked the UPSC Civil Services exam twice—in 2010 and 2011—despite the odds stacked against her.

Becoming Sikkim’s first female IPS officer, she shone during her training, winning multiple top awards. As an officer, she’s played a key role in busting smuggling rackets involving drugs and gold, earning respect for her courage and integrity.

Aparajita’s journey teaches that setbacks don’t define us—our response to them does. She continues to inspire countless young minds to rise above challenges and chase their purpose.
