KNA fighter and Civilian killed in Ambush; One Villager arrested and allegedly tortured

A member of the Kuki Chin National Army (KNA) and a civilian farmer were killed in an early morning ambush on 03 July 2035, allegedly carried out by the Bangladesh Army near the Ruma zone.

According to the Media Wing of the KNA, the incident took place at around 6:00 a.m. when a group of armed KNA personnel from Mualpi village were on their way to conduct an operation in the Ruma area. While resting during their movement, they were reportedly surrounded and attacked by Bangladeshi forces. In the attack, Laltlanhthang Bawm, a newly recruited KNA private, was killed on the spot.

A civilian, Mr. Lalhimsang Bawm, a jhum (shifting cultivation) farmer from Munnuam village who happened to be nearby, was also shot and killed during the encounter.

Later that night, Mr. Ramthang (also known as Pasen Bawm), a resident of Mualpi village, was arrested by the Bangladesh Army on suspicion of collaborating with the KNA. He was reportedly taken to a military camp, where he was subjected to inhuman torture, including brutal physical beatings. Unconfirmed reports suggest that he was subsequently transported towards Chittagong.

This incident has once again highlighted the ongoing plight of the Kuki-Chin people in Bangladesh, who have long been deprived of basic human rights, including access to quality healthcare, education, and developmental opportunities. For decades, the community has faced systemic neglect, marginalisation, and military oppression, further escalating tensions in the Chittagong Hill Tracts region.

The KNA has condemned the attack and alleged human rights violations, calling for international attention and intervention to ensure justice and protection for the Kuki-Chin population. Local human rights organisations have echoed these concerns and are demanding an independent investigation into the incident and the broader situation faced by the community.

As of now, the Bangladesh Army has not issued an official response regarding the incident.

Karenni Force captures Myanmar Junta Soldiers

July 4, 2025: In a significant development highlighting the intensifying conflict in Myanmar, the Karenni Nationalities Defence Force (KNDF), a prominent pro-democracy armed group, has reportedly taken several soldiers from the Myanmar Army's 134th Infantry Battalion as prisoners of war (POWs).

Sources within the resistance movement claim the capture took place during a recent clash in the conflict-ridden Karenni (Kayah) State, where KNDF and allied forces have steadily gained ground against the military junta.

The growing success of pro-democracy rebel groups across the country marks a turning point in the resistance against military rule, which began after the February 2021 coup. The ongoing fighting reflects the deepening instability in Myanmar, with no clear resolution in sight.

Observers note that the prolonged unrest has been exacerbated by the influx of narcotics and illegal weapons, with allegations pointing to external influences—particularly China—seeking to benefit from a weakened and divided Myanmar. What was once a relatively peaceful nation is now embroiled in a prolonged civil conflict, threatening regional stability.

The World Kuki-Zo Intellectual Council (WKZIC)-GHQ is pleased to come across the 'Press Releases' of our blood brothers, namely the Chiru Students in the name of CSU-NEI, Vide. Ref.No. Nill, dated, the 3rd July 2025 and the Inpui Youths' Union (INYO), Vide. Ref.No. Nill, dated, the 3rd July 2025 respectively regarding Kuki-Zo peoples' road connectivity. WKZIC take this opportunity as a moment of "Social Interactions and Communications" between long separated blood brothers.

We, the Manmasi Kuki-Chin blood related and connected community including the Chirus and the Inpuis had been socially divided during pre-historical period due to 'Tribal Internecine Clan Wars' which was prevalent during the era, who were further politically divided by colonial administrators during colonial period, to subjugate and supress them. Today, we are raised high and recognised as distinct tribes each by the Government of India through Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes Modification Acts 1956, to protect and safeguard all groups constitutionally. In the context of Manipur too, we the Manmasi Kuki-Chin blood groups were divided socially and polically by neighbouring stronger communities, resulting into blood brother versus blood brother situation geo-politics, which one  must stick to roots. We the Kuki-Chin/Kuki-Zo people knew very well that the Chirus and the Inpuis are our own blood and not enemies._

Here is the specific Chiru and Inpui Genealogical Tree (Ralngam, Anthropologist, Historian & Researcher) of Kuki-Chin blood group as under.

RELATIONS OF DOUNGEL AND SHONGKIP (PUMTU)

Doungel(Aisanpa) who is the piba(eldest) among the kuki had historical connection with the Shongkip(Pumtu). It will be a paradoxical to some scholars about the relations between the Doungel(Aisanpa) and the Shongkip(Pumtu). But bloodline define the rationality of the Doungel(Aisanpa). Doungel(Aisanpa) although he was not the eldest(pipa) among the kukis, earned the title of the eldest(piba) and even till today the clans among the kukis gave Sating( a customary practice of kukis which marked and respect to the eldest brother by giving the spine of an animal) to Doungel(Aisanpa). The blood line of Doungel Aisanpa at a time ended with the death of the Chief of Aisan for he left without a son to inherit and continue his rule. So, a deeply analysis should be done to understand who really are the Doungel( Aisante) in contemporary age.
At times, Doungel(Aisanpa) the chief of Aisan had only one daughter and had no sons. Chengjapao Hanghal married to the only daughter of the Chief of Aisan. The chief of Aisan is left without the heir of inheritance as according to kuki customary law a son is  the only rightful heir to inherit the property and the bloodline is only traced through male-father to son. Chengjapao Hanghal as he married the only daughter of the Chief of Aisan ruled the village of Aisan as a sub- ordinate to the Chief of Aisan. Gaining the trust and wisdom of the Chief of Aisan, Chengjapao Hanghal exercise his insightful knowledge in assisting the Chief of Aisan in governing the Village of Aisan and began gaining favour of the Chief of Aisan. Chengjapao Hanghal and his wife stayed in the house of the Chief of Aisan and assist the Chief of Aisan till the last breath of the Chief. When the Chief of Aisan died, his only daughter took all the ornaments( traditional necklace, earings etc.) that each marked the power and superiority of the Chief of Aisan and let her husband wear the ornaments. Then, Chengjapao Hanghal became the Chief of Aisan and began to exercise his full power in governing the Village of Aisan. During his rule, the first world war 1914-1919 broke out which affected the kuki dominated areas. It should be rightly pointed out that the kukis did not tolerate any invasion to their Autonomy and their cultural rights, and historically the kukis did not serve any masters, the village Chiefs governed their land as the indomitable kings. Chengjapao Hanghal as the Chief of Aisan began to participate in the war between the kukis and the British. Subsequently, Chengjapao Hanghal began to emerged as one of the greatest leader among the kukis in the war. The war was known to the world as Anglo Kuki War of 1917to 1919 in which the kukis fought the Britishers to defend their sovereignty and autonomy. The kukis fought the war with using guerrilla warfare/jungle warfare. Chengjapao Hanghal reluctantly surrendered to the British on 23,August,1918 as the forces of the kukis and the mighty British is beyond compared. After the complete suppression of the war by the British, the kukis were forced to finger point their leader among them. On hearing the British order, the kukis were left with doubt and fear, for they had the intention that the Britishers will execute the leader. The kukis conspired and finger pointed Chengjapao Hanghal, Chief of Aisan as their mi-upa) 'pipa' among them and that he was the Chief leader and organiser of the Anglo Kuki War of 1917 to 1919. Chengjapao Hanghal was imprisoned by the British colonial rulers for his role in the Anglo-Kuki War of Independence, which lasted from 1917 to 1919. He was imprisoned in Taungyi Jail in Burma (Myanmar). Initially, other Kuki chiefs were imprisoned here for three years. But,Chengjapao Hanghal was detained for another year beyond the three year term served by the other chiefs, likely due to his leadership role as "Mi-upa" (head of all Kuki clans). He was released in 1923. After his released, Chengjapao Hanghal was given the acknowledgement letter by the British as the mi- upa(head of all kuki clans). The British gave certificate that acknowledge him as the Kuki Raja(king of Kuki) and his clan was written as Doungel from that time.
 In all the writings of historian and scholars, Chengjapao Hanghal was written as Chengjapao Doungel and the British acknowledgement letter and symbols of Chengjapao Hanghal as mi-upa( head of all kuki clans) were written as Chengjapao Doungel. Chengjapao Hanghal while enjoying the power as the Chief of Aisan despised his kinship/clan and accepted Doungel as his clan's/kinship, and disregarding and disrespect by other kuki clans also led to the despised of his kinship/clanship by Chengjapao Hanghal himself. Even today, Chengjapao Hanghal was written as Chengjapao Doungel in the kuki history and his role in the Anglo Kuki War of 1917 to 1919 was the greatest outstanding among the kuki leaders at that time.
Chengjapao Hanghal was named after Ngulcheng Hanghal( Ngulcheng - Chengjapao) and his progenies were still using Doungel as their kinship . Even today, his descendants still rule the Village of Aisan and remained as the head of all the kukis( mi- upa). Chengjapao Hanghal was among the youngest in the sub- clans of Hanghal. Among the progenies of Hanghal, Neingul was one among the sub-clans and Chengjapao Hanghal was the descendants and on the linage of 'Haongul'. Currently, Ngamkhotinthang Doungel who is the great grandson of Chengjapao Doungel rule the Aisan Village and remained as the head of all kukis.
Today, the Shongkip(Pumtu) phungpi, an organisation of the Hanghal headed by some greedy and hypocratic out of ignorance gave Doungel(Aisanpa) sating( a customary practice in which the spine of an animal is given to the eldest by the younger brothers to marked respect/eldest) and so, this became a controversial to the Hanghal people. The Hanghal's at any cost will not be able to give Sating to Doungel (Aisanpa) as Doungel(Aisante) are the blood brothers of Hanghal, and they are one of the youngest among the progenies of Hanghal. Shongkip( Pumtu) was the person who migrated form the mythical cave from China with his brothers. Shongkip(Pumtu) was the younger brother of Shongthu(Guite). So, the rightful eldest brother who can be given Sating by Hanghal is Shongthu(Guite). The kukis followed patriarchal system in which the bloodline is traced through father to son so, one must be fully aware to simply assimilate to other clans/kin deliberately or out of ignorance inorder to prevent the generations from disgrace and misunderstanding.

KOHUR Demands Highway Access for Kuki Survival

Lamka, July 3, 2025: The Kuki Organization for Human Rights Trust (KOHUR) has strongly condemned opposition by Meitei civil society groups to the construction of alternative highway routes — Lamka–Kangpokpi and Tengnoupal–Chandel–Lamka. In a press release issued today, KOHUR accused these groups of displaying deep-seated prejudice and double standards, endangering the fundamental rights and survival of Kuki communities in Manipur.

The organization highlighted that, since May 3, 2023, Kuki populations have been effectively cut off from the rest of the state due to ethnic violence and the unsafe condition of highways in Meitei-dominated areas. Vehicles carrying essential supplies, including medicines, have been attacked, and neither state nor central authorities have intervened effectively to restore safe passage.

Despite these challenges, KOHUR noted that the Kuki community has not retaliated violently, instead focusing on developing alternative routes to sustain access to food, medicine, and communication. The group criticized the central government's inaction and condemned the opposition to these self-funded and volunteer-built routes as "deeply discriminatory."

Calling for urgent action, KOHUR demanded that:

The Central Government stop appeasing majoritarian forces and protect minority rights;

Meitei civil societies cease their obstructionist stance;

Media and civil society speak out against the injustices faced by the Kuki people.

The statement concluded with a strong warning: "The Kuki people will not remain silent or gullible in the face of such blatant injustice."

Such reports have stirred emotions, bringing a mixture of cautious hope and quiet longing among our people who have been waiting to be seen and heard in the last more than 2 years.

Although no official announcement has been made from any authoritative government source till today, its possibility has given rise to renewed anticipation.

If the august visit by the PM truly happens, we would extend a warm and sincere welcome to him in our land. Such a visit would be a highly symbolic act of recognition to acknowledge the grief, endurance and quiet strength of our people who went through fire. And the suffering has finally been noticed by the nation at large.

Over the past years, we have attended occasional dialogues, albeit mostly at the official advisory representative level, without ministerial/political involvement. Such interactions have failed to yield any political relief so far. It is our sincere hope that a
visit from the Head of Government will mark an inclusive turning point—not just for show, but in taking decisive action to heal and kindle hope for the people.

The Zomi Council is ready to work hand in hand with the government at all levels to help bring peace, stability and a better future for our people.

We respectfully urge the Centre to address the situation that rampages amongst us. Let the proposed visit be an opportunity to rebuild trust, restore faith and walk together towards a meaningful political solution.

Let it be remembered as a moment when the nation turned its face towards the communal purging which plagued Manipur since May 3, 2023.
