The Zomi Council Headquarters and its Constituent tribes condemn in the strongest terms, the heinous crimes against humanity unleashed by Military Junta in Myanmar (Burma) since 1st

February 2021. We also condemn the non-recognition of election results in the country and subsequent Coup by Military Junta, and their brutal attempts to subside democratic voices of the people leading to killing hundreds of innocent people. At this juncture the Council is minutely 

observing the developments unfolding in the country and could not be a mere spectator to the 

sufferings of the Burmese, especially our very own people within the present territorial jurisdiction under the Government of Myanmar, as 'blood is thicker than water'. The Zomi Council uphold democratic principles and has been tirelessly working for restoration of fullest democracy in Myanmar ever since its inception. We, therefore, appeal to the international community to intervene immediately for restoration of democracy in Myanmar and stop the brutal killings of peaceful protesters. The Indo-Myanmar boundary is unique in many ways - it was drawn unilaterally by the colonial British and remains inconsistent with the traditional limits of the indigenous people living in the borderland for ages. Knowing this fact, the British initiated free movement zone within 20

kilometres on both side of the boundary. The policy continues in the form of Free Movement 

Regime (FMR) which allows indigenous people living along the border to travel 16 kilometres 

across either side of the border without visa restrictions. In the event of humanitarian crisis 

unfolding in Myanmar, we request the Government of India to uphold the existing FMR policy to facilitate humanitarian aid and assistance. We also appeal to each and every Zomi and the Churches to uphold in prayer the sufferings of our people in Myanmar and fervently pray that peace, normalcy and democracy is restored in the country. We cannot remain silent spectators in times of the emerging humanitarian crisis.

A Tribute to Pu Thawngluan – Pioneer Missionary to the Thangkhals

The story of Pu Thawngluan, the missionary who brought the gospel to the Thangkhals 
and transformed their faith and community life.

On 07 March 1939, a little-known evangelist named Pu Thawngluan from the Evangelical Convention Church arrived in the Thangkhal hamlet of T. Khajang. He carried the same gospel first brought to Senvawn in 1910 by the Welsh missionary Watkin Roberts—a message that had already transformed many Zo communities across the hills.

Before him, some Mizo gospel messengers had reached the Thangkhal hills, but due to language differences, the Thangkhals paid little attention. This time, however, things were different.

Pu Thawngluan first went to Mulam with the hope of sharing the gospel. But the Thangkhals there did not allow him to enter or stay the night. They feared he would bring bad omens, sickness, and misfortune to their village. They chased him away, even shooting him with slings (saili) and spraying him with pig-swill (food scraps mixed with water). They drove him out as if they were chasing away animals.

Mulam was the first settlement of the Thangkhals, who at that time followed their old religion known as Lawki. Their customs and community life were deeply rooted in traditional practices, with the Siampu (priest) holding an important role.

Mulam is a hill situated on the top of a mountain between two hills—Kulhvum and Gamdawng Vum. The name Mulam comes from mu (kite) and laam (soaring over the hills). The sight of a soaring kite was a sign to the Thangkhal forefathers that the mountain would provide abundant food and resources. Kulhvum is a hill from which one can clearly see the surrounding areas, and it served as a lookout point during times of danger. Gamdawng Vum, on the other hand, is a pasture land where cattle grazed on the open grass.

Finding no place to stay in Mulam, Pu Thawngluan simply returned to Khajang, which was further downhill. Life in the Thangkhal villages continued as usual. People drank Zupi and sang Saan-Nem-La, their traditional songs, in the evenings after working in the fields. Their harvests were plentiful and often lasted two to three years, so they lived without much worry. They also kept many animals—cattle, buffaloes, goats, chickens, dogs, and more. Hunting was their favourite pastime.

Everything changed when the chief of Khajang, Pu Ulchin, welcomed him. Pu Thawngluan stayed in the village and began preaching the gospel. Gradually, Pu Ulchin accepted the new faith and was baptized by him, followed by Pu Vumkai, Pu Selkha and Pu Lunzahau—with whom Pu Thawngluan celebrated Christmas with chicken meat (akpum). Then, one by one, others followed.

From his base in Khajang, Pu Thawngluan travelled to other Thangkhal villages such as Suangkuang, Khaukual, Khuangkhai and Mulam. Only a few accepted him at first, but the seed of the gospel had been planted. Slowly, the villagers responded.

A touching moment came when his beloved wife passed away in Khajang. The Thangkhal women loved her deeply and wanted to cry for her. They asked him, “Pa Luan, may we cry for our beloved mother?” He gently replied, “No, you must not cry. She is peacefully resting in the bosom of our God in heaven. We are believers; we should not cry for her. She is at peace.” Out of respect, they hid their tears. Some cried quietly behind his house, not wanting to disobey him.

In Thangkhal, Pu (for elder men) and Pi (for elder women) were titles of honour, while Pa means dad and Nu means mum.

Pu Thawngluan and his wife, Pi Thuangkhongai, had eight children—five girls and three boys. The first three children were born while the family lived in Khajang. The rest were born after they moved away.

The evangelist worked among the Thangkhals from 1939 to 1947 before being posted to Mualpi (ECC). His time among the Thangkhals was short, yet the seeds of the gospel did not die out. Instead, they continued to grow. Over the years, the Thangkhals gradually turned from Lawki to Tapidaw (believers of Christ). This spiritual transformation eventually led to the formation of the Thangkhal Christian Association at Mulam Tanglian on 04 April 1981. Sadly, Pu Thawngluan passed away on 02 July 1983.

By God’s grace, through this faithful servant Pu Thawngluan, the Thangkhals began a new journey—one that still shapes their community today.

Thangkhal Tangvalte: A Glimpse of the 1990s

This photo shows the typical bachelor fashion of the Thangkhal community in the 1990s—smart coats, colourful ties, polished shoes, and a proud village charm. Each outfit has its own character, yet all of them reflect the careful dressing and youthful confidence expected of Tangvalte at that time. Tanglian, in those days, was a beautiful village located on a hill, with a flowing river below that added to its natural charm.

Assam Rifles inspects SoO designated camps in Manipur

Lamka, Feb 28, 2021: In an effort to ensure adherence to Suspension of Operation ground rules by signatory underground insurgent cadres, Churachandpur Battalion of Assam Rifles carried out inspections of SoO camps jointly with the district police in Sangaikot, Churachandpur and Henglep subdivisions on Saturday.

In addition to checking attendance of the SoO signatory insurgent cadres inside the designated camps, sensitization programs on COVID-19 precautions and vaccination drives were also held. Various details of the cadres were also collected for the preparation of Aadhar cards.

Moreover, infrastructure requirements of the SoO camps were also noted for appropriate renovations by DRDA.

Furthermore, recent violations of SoO ground rules by few SoO groups were also discussed and the cadres were advised to strictly follow the guidelines and not indulge in any illegal or prohibited activities.

It needs to be mentioned here that, earlier this week, Manipur DGP LM Khaute had issued an order to the district police superintendents to ensure that the SoO cadres don't indulge in any unlawful activities prohibited under the SoO agreements and initiate legal actions against all violators including civil society members.

Indian Army has published the notification for admission to 4 years B Sc. (Nursing) Course 2021 in the employment newspaper dated 13 February to 19 February 2021.

Manipur Hill Journalists’ Union: Condemnation

The Manipur Hill Journalists' Union (MHJU)  condemns in the strongest term the bombing attack on the twin offices of Poknapham and The People's Chronicles, located at the heart of Imphal on the 13th February, 2021. Owing to its role and importance, press/media is regarded as the fourth estate or fourth pillar of democracy and such a
savage act on media house in this age is totally uncalled for. 

The MHJU consider such a cowardly act as attack on journalism and media fraternity and warned the culprits to refrain from such act in future.

The MHJU urged the concerned authority to book the culprits and gave befitting punishment as per law.

The MHJU express our solidarity to the staffs of Poknapham and The People's Chronicles and further re-affirm our stand for media fraternity of the state and national level.

The MHJU appreciate the steps taken in connection with this incident by AMWJU and EGM and support the call for 48 hours cease work strike starting 16th February, 2021. All publications under MHJU will cease until further notice.

Exclusive Interview: Grace Simte, Makeup Artist

IN a candid chat with this young lady, she shared her story. Sorrow overshadowed her soon after her parents died. Out of the three siblings, she’s the middle, of two brothers. She began restless searching for an opportunity to stand on her own feet.  Both, her dad and mom passed away in 2012.  Inspite of many odds, she managed to passed XII standard. She hails from Kamdou Veng, Churachandpur, who is now residing in Gurgaon, with her younger brother – a college going student. She earnestly prayed to God. Gradually, she landed up into the world of make-up!

GS: I am honoured.

ZT: Can you tell us something about yourself?

GS: My name is Grace Simte. And I am a Certified Professional Makeup Artist. Currently working in Gurgaon, Haryana.

ZT: What actually is your job profile?

GS: A Certified Makeup Artist & also a Nail Technician.

ZT: Is this a regular or part time?

GS: It’s a regular Job.

ZT: How long have you been into this profession?

GS: I’ve been working in this field for the past 2 years.

GS: It’s always been my passion since my childhood. I would say it’s my determination that brought me unto this day.

ZT: Is this job, only for women?

GS: No, not at all. It’s for both male and female.

ZT: Where did you learn Makeup and Nail Extension?

GS: I was certified from Aashmeen Munjaal Star Academy, Gurgaon and I have learnt Nail work from Paint Box, Gurgaon.

ZT: What was your last job?

GS: I use to work as a Marketing Manager for a Guest House.

ZT: Before you came to Delhi, where were you?

GS: Manipur.

ZT: When did you landed in Delhi?

GS: In 2017.

ZT: What was your childhood dream?

GS: I actually dreamt of becoming Air Hostess or Singer, and ofcourse a Makeup Artist!

ZT: I’ve seen your singing in social media. Have you record any song so far? Or Any plan to make album?

GS: I actually got a chance to work with Mr L. Mawia Simte (artist) on a song and recorded it. I am planning to work on my singles in the coming days. My song is currently on Youtube…You can check it out. (Song name: Ka Selung Muanna)

GS: Well…I really love to sing and dance. You know all the girly stuffs...

ZT: Your favourite singer? 

GS: I am really fascinated by Lauren Daigle. She is a Christian Singer… apparently it was her song that brought me closer to God.

GS: Mom & Dad

ZT: Your favourite sport?

GS: I am not a sport person…but, I do like to play badminton.

 

ZT: Which place do you like to visit?

GS: I would really love to go to London.

ZT: Do you ever sing in the church or any event, before? 

GS: Actually I am a part of the worship team in our Church (ANDF Church, Gurgaon)

ZT: Is your place safe for women?

GS: Ahhh…I would say there’s no place safe for anyone. Anything can happen to anyone. But! Despite a lot of Crazy NEWS we have heard on TV and other media. God have been protecting me from trouble! So, I think we are only safe in His hands.

ZT: Do you ever face any harassment or racial abusive?

GS: No, nothing at all.

ZT: Do you love Bollywood songs?

GS: I love Arijit Singh and most of his songs.

ZT: How do you spend your Sundays?

GS: I go to Church every Sunday. Sometimes hang out with friends.

GS: I do actually miss them but God has been strengthening me to move on.
