An innocent young man of Bawm ethnicity, imprisoned in Chittagong Central Jail, dies

Thursday, May 15, 2025: A young man of Bawm ethnic tribe Lalthleng Kim Bawm (30), has died while imprisoned in Chittagong Central Jail. It is reported that he died on the way to the hospital this Thursday (May 15, 2025) morning. It has been alleged that he died due to lack of proper treatment and torture.

Laltleng Kim Bawm's father's name is Lammin Lian Bawm. His home is in Bethel Para, Ruma Upazila, Bandarban.

On April 8, 2024, in the name of an military operation against the Kuki-Chin National Front (KNF), the joint forces arrested 49 people, including women from Bethel village, one of whom was Lalthleng Kim Bawm.

It has been alleged that since his arrest, prisoners of the Bawm ethnic people have been detained in prison without trial for more than a year, and that the sick are not being given proper treatment. Due to which Lalthleng Kim Bawm died. A source said that he had suffered injuries on one side of his head.

The body is currently kept at the Chittagong Medical College Hospital morgue. It is learnt that the guardians have been asked to come tomorrow to collect the body.

Meanwhile, another prisoner named Sanmawi Bawm (55) is currently admitted in custody at Chittagong Medical College Hospital. His condition is also said to be critical.

Rights activists call the death of Lalthleng Kim Bawm in prison a structural state murder and ethnic oppression. They allege that in the name of the anti-KNF campaign, an ethnic cleansing campaign is being carried out against the Bawm ethnicity.

It is worth noting that during the fascist Awami League government, in rhe name of military operation on April 8, 2024, 49 innocent men and women were arrested from Bethel Para by  Joined forces led by Bangladesh Army  In this long-running campaign, more than a hundred Bawm men, women and children have been arrested and sent to prison in various bank robbery cases without any proof. They were transferred from Bandarban District Jail to Chittagong Central Jail in several phases. Four minor children are also still living in prison with their mothers.

They applied for bail in the court several times through their lawyers, but the court did not grant them bail. As a result, they have been forced to live an inhuman life in prison for more than a year.

After the fall of the Awami League government in the July 24th mass uprising, when an interim government was formed in the country, many notorious terrorists including convicted militants were released from prison in the country, but innocent men, women and children of the BAWM ethnicity are not being released.

RPI (Athawale) Manipur Unit Condemned the Incident

20/05/2025 (Tue): RPI (Athawale) Manipur unit president Maheshwar Thounaojam has strongly condemned the incident in which army personnel forced the removal of *"Manipur"* name written on Manipur State Transport bus heading for Shirui Lily festival.

"Under whose authorities has it been done? We want to see that order" Thounaojam said.

Kuki Women Organisation for Human Rights (KWOHR) condemns ARREST of Kuki Inpi Spokesperson

Press Release

20 May 2025

The Kuki Women Organisation for Human Rights strongly condemns the arrest of Mr. Thangminlen Mate, spokesperson of Kuki Inpi Tengnoupal, by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) in connection with the January 17, 2024 attack on the Kondung Lairenbi Moreh IRB post.

We categorically state that Mr. Thangminlen Mate is not affiliated with any armed organization. He is a respected public figure and representative of Kuki Inpi, the traditional apex body of the Kuki people. His arrest is unjust and baseless, and it raises serious concerns about the targeting of civilians under the guise of investigation.

It is alarming that despite numerous violent incidents, including attacks on multiple police stations and the looting of over 6,000 weapons in the Imphal valley, no substantial action has been taken by the authorities in those cases. This selective approach undermines the rule of law and erodes public trust.

We urge the government and relevant authorities to approach this matter with seriousness and fairness. The arbitrary arrest of innocent civilians must cease immediately. We call for the prompt and unconditional release of Mr. Thangminlen Mate.

Justice, peace, and the protection of human rights must prevail.

MEITEI FLAG on KUKI CHURCHES

Compiled by:-
KHALVONTAWI MEDIA
---- Voice of Voiceless ----

ZOMI FLAG: Targeting the tribal communities specifically is a misguided choice.

The representation of diverse communities is what unites India. The Zomi Community possesses its own flag, similar to other communities. In the context of Manipur, the focus on the Zomi or Zo ethnic groups represents yet another act of injustice perpetrated by the state-sponsored terrorism, which the Indian government has failed to address adequately.

If displaying a community flag violates the Indian armed forces' code of conduct, then why were the successionist Meitei allowed to display the Arambai Tenggol flags on Indian Navy ships?

The systemic injustices, selectivity, and majoritarian autocracy of the government have obscured the truth. The Meiteis, who align with RSS ideology, should not feel secure if actions are taken against Zomi youths who have recently completed their training.

Resilience and Reform: The Normative Shift in Kuki Society: TS Tongminthang Haokip

For long, we have rightfully mourned the loss and deep scars left by the ongoing conflict. Our energies have been devoted to documenting our suffering and counting the cost. But now, as a semblance of peace returns, let us shift our gaze to the opportunities and growth born out of adversity.

History reminds us that even the darkest chapters can become turning points. Wars, though inherently destructive, have often sparked critical transformation be it technological innovation, new institutions, bold ideas, and far-reaching social reforms. The internet, for instance, emerged from Cold War competition; the United Nations was born from the ashes of World War II.

Similarly, our society now stands at a critical juncture. If we choose to harness it wisely, this moment of crisis can also become a catalyst for long-term positive change. While we must never glorify war, we should also not ignore the possibilities for growth that can emerge from this debilitation.

What is normative shift?

The conflict has resulted in a significant normative shift within the Kuki community. By this I refer to a change in our collective values, beliefs, and expectations about what is considered right, legitimate, or necessary in society be it morally, politically, or culturally which I believe will serve as the foundation for a broader legal, institutional, or cultural reforms.

New perception of politics

To begin with, we traditionally place a deep trust in the state, depending on it for our security, welfare, and development. However, the outbreak of ethnic violence, coupled with the government's perceived inaction or complicity, has sparked a deep sense of disillusionment with state institutions. There is a shift in our political mentality. It has I believed changed our perception about our neighbouring community, the state and our place in this political context. We have now shifted from a firm believer of the state to skeptic of the state. We are moving towards what Ronald Reagan once wittingly remark, "The nine most terrifying words in the English language are: I'm from the government, and I'm here to help" to indicate suspicion and skepticism of the role of the government.

People's Movement as a new political strategy?

Corollary to this political awakening is the emergence the idea of people-led movement— marked by grassroots mobilization and civic engagement. The Delhi Declaration, initiated by the Delhi Kuki Students' Organisation (KSO), along with efforts by our community leaders in Hyderabad and Manipur, signals a departure from traditional political strategies to collective action. Equally noteworthy is the public outcry against acts of gender-based violence, including protests over cases of rape and murder issues that were once silenced or dealt with strictly under customary practices. The bold stand taken by women's groups like Zalen Numei in Delhi reflects a breaking of taboos and a new willingness to confront deeply rooted social injustices.

Community Empowerment and Self-Reliance

This crisis has also awakened a powerful sense of shared responsibility within us. We have begun to tap into the vast potential of our diaspora and mobilize funds through crowd funding for healthcare, education, emergency aid, and infrastructure.

A significant example of this is the establishment of six KSO Community Schools, which now provide education to displaced children, forming village volunteers for our security to crowd funding infrastructure projects like the D. Phailen Road, Gangpimual blacktopping, and the IB Road in Lamka are noteworthy.

The role of the Church has also been redirected from its traditional focus on spiritual and religious services to take humanitarian role such as supporting education for displaced students, providing relief and rehabilitation materials etc.

What emerged from necessity is now becoming a new norm: the belief that we cannot—and should not—rely solely on external actors for our progress marks the beginning of a more self-reliant and community-driven approach to development.

The Digital Frontline of Conflict

Another striking realization during the crisis has been that in digital age, war is also waged in cyberspace not only on ground. We have seen that in the larger political context what is seen and circulated online sometimes matters more than what happens on the ground.

The rise of social media "warriors" and digital campaigns has shown how narratives, misinformation, and visibility shape public perception.

This has led to a heightened awareness of the power of digital media and the critical importance of maintaining an active and informed presence online. Undeniably, a strong push toward digital literacy. We thus learned and acquired a new strategy for political protest and movement.

Some other promising development in this regard has been the emergence of communitydriven information on electronic and digital platforms. Initiatives like Field Notes by the Zomi Students' Federation (ZSF) and Thingkho le Malcha by the Kuki Students' Organisation (KSO) offer timely, well-curated news bulletins from the ground.

The Growing Realisation of Mental Health

One of the quieters, yet profound shifts brought about by the conflict has been our growing awareness of mental health. Traditionally, we either ignored mental well-being or misunderstood it. However, given the crisis we faced and the emotional toll of prolonged violence, displacement, and trauma has compelled many to confront the psychological scars left behind. Conversations around anxiety, depression, and PTSD have slowly entered our public discourse. There is a growing acknowledgment that healing is not just physical or material, but also emotional. This shift—though still in its early stages—is a positive step toward building a more empathetic, and emotionally aware society.

Building on Our Own Future

We should not let these positive developments to not remain a temporary response to crisis. We should nurture and institutionalised them for long-term growth and development. It's time we follow John F. Kennedy once famously said, "Ask not what your country can do for you—ask what you can do for your country." And finally, like the Churchillian dictum said "If each of us does our duty, we shall not fail". We shall overcome

BTT CONDEMNS ASSAM RIFLES: ISSUE OF FLAG

We express our strong condemnation of the Assam Rifles' recent biased post on X (formerly Twitter) concerning the display of the Zomi community flag. This post is not only unjust but also reflects a disturbing double standard in the treatment of ethnic communities in the region.

The Zomi flag is a cultural and ethnic symbol, representing the history, resilience, and identity of the Zomi people—proud citizens of India. It is not a political or secessionist emblem, and it has never been used to undermine the sovereignty of the nation.

The misrepresentation and targeting of the Zomi flag by a security force is both unwarranted and deeply hurtful to the sentiments of our community.

What is more alarming is the silence and inaction of the Assam Rifles and other security agencies in the face of actual secessionist displays—most notably the unrestricted public display of the Salai Taret flag by Meitei secessionist groups, who have openly voiced anti-national rhetoric and engaged in activities that threaten India's unity and territorial integrity. The selective scrutiny and one-sided narrative perpetuated by the Assam Rifles raise serious concerns about institutional bias and unequal treatment under the guise of national security.

The Zomi community remains committed to peace, democratic values, and the unity of India. We call for respect, equality, and justice—not just in words, but in actions that reflect the true spirit of the Indian Constitution.

OPEN LETTER to PM & HM: KUKILAND MEDIA

Open Letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah

We urge you to acknowledge that a separate administration for the Kuki people is the only viable solution to the ongoing conflict in Manipur. The imposition of President's Rule under Article 356, destruction of duty posts by security forces in the buffer zone, and attempts to restore peace through military means have not been effective measures for restoring peace.

The communal conflict in Manipur is, in essence, a territorial dispute. Therefore, the Government of India must recognize the Kuki-inhabited region as a separate territory, which has been the ancestral homeland of the Kuki people for generations.

The creation of a separate administration in the form of a Union Territory is the sole solution to ensuring lasting peace between the Meeteis and the Kukis in the region.

It is also imperative to acknowledge that the Kuki, Naga, and Meetei are the indigenous peoples of Manipur. The Kukis have no connection to external elements, such as illegal immigrants and refugees from foreign countries.

Furthermore, it is essential to recognize the significant contributions of the Kuki people to India's struggle for independence, including the participation of over 80 Kukis in the Indian war of independence.

In light of these facts, the Kuki people deserve a separate state and administration, as enshrined in the Constitution of India.

Sincerely,
St. Ginth Haokip

KWOHR PRESS RELEASE: PAOJAKHUP GUITE

The 18th May, 2025: The Kuki Women Organisation for Human Rights (KWOHR) strongly condemns the filing of a First Information Report (FIR) by a group of Meira Paibis against Mr. Paojakhup Guite, a prominent voice advocating for the rights and security of the Kuki-Zo people. This FIR is an attempt to criminalize legitimate democratic expression and silence those speaking out against the injustices faced by the Kuki-Zo community.

Since May 2023, the Kuki-Zo people in Manipur have suffered systematic violence, displacement, and what amounts to ethnic cleansing at the hands of dominant Meitei groups. Despite incendiary hate speeches by Meitei leaders like Korounganba and Pramod Singh who have openly incited violence with slogans such as "Kuki Hatlo" (Kill all Kukis) the government has failed to take any legal or punitive action against them. This blatant inaction reveals a dangerous double standard and the failure of the state to uphold justice and equality.

In a recent speech delivered in Churachandpur, Mr. Guite raised serious and valid concerns regarding buffer zones established due to ongoing ethnic tensions. These zones have restricted movement between Meitei and Kuki-Zo areas to prevent further conflict. However, the government's facilitation of unrestricted passage without addressing the underlying political crisis and without consultation with affected communities is a direct provocation to the Kuki-Zo people. His remarks emphasized that allowing such transit without a political solution violates the purpose of the buffer zones and risks further unrest.

Mr. Paojakhup Guite's call for a separate administration for the Kuki-Zo people is rooted in the constitutional right to self-determination and is a legitimate response to prolonged neglect, discrimination, and insecurity. In a democracy, the people have the right to organize and raise their voices when the government fails to protect them.

KWOHR expresses full solidarity with Mr. Guite and all others working toward justice and dignity for the Kuki people. We call on the authorities to immediately withdraw the FIR and instead address the real issues facing the state rampant impunity, lack of political will, and the continued marginalization of minority communities.

Justice Delayed is Justice Denied. We will not be silenced.

Mizoram received 4.69 Lakh visitors

Mizoram recorded over 4.69 lakh visitors in the 2024-25 fiscal, 4,64,742 were domestic and the remaining 5,011 came from more than 80 countries, including the United States, UK, China, Japan and Germany, according to the records, according to the state tourism department.

The department's records indicated that a total of 4,69,753 tourists arrived in the hilly state during the financial year 2024-2025 till February, a whopping 114.29 per cent increase from the tourist footfall of over 2.19 lakh in the 2023-2024 fiscal.

The detailed record of tourist arrival for March this year is yet to be established, officials said.

During 2024-25, Aizawl district recorded the highest tourist footfall with 2,62,224 domestic and 4,097 foreign tourists, followed by Assam bordering Kolasib with 1,05,593 visitors, including 25 foreigners.

The northeastern state is making headway in the tourism sector with a responsible tourism policy that came into force in August 2020, officials said.

The policy envisages a sustainable development strategy, coordination, strengthening institutional framework and skill development.

It also focuses on making tourism a tool for the development of villages and local communities, eradicating poverty and providing livelihood for the local population while upholding the principles of economic, social and environmental responsibilities, they said.

According to officials, the state tourism department generated ₹3.27 crore in revenue in the 2024-2025 fiscal.

At present there are 197 identified tourist destinations and 78 tourist lodges or facilities across the state, the officials said.

Of the 78 tourist facilities, 39 are directly operated and managed by the department, while the remaining 39 facilities were outsourced to private agencies.

There are now 101 registered hotels, 125 homestays, 76 tour operators, 95 tour guides and 31 catering units in the state, they added.
