CM Attends Vungzagin Valte Funeral in Lamka

Lamka, July 4, 2026: Chief Minister Shri Yumnam Khemchand Singh on Saturday attended the funeral service of former Thanlon MLA, late Vungzagin Valte, at his residence in Dorcas Veng, Churachandpur, becoming the first Chief Minister to visit the district since ethnic violence erupted in Manipur on May 3, 2023.

The Chief Minister travelled to Churachandpur by helicopter before returning to Imphal later in the day to attend a virtual meeting with Union Home Minister Shri Amit Shah.

Paying tribute to the late legislator, Shri Khemchand Singh described Valte as "a very calm person" and recalled their close association since 2017, when he first became the Speaker of the Manipur Legislative Assembly.

Reflecting on the May 4, 2023 attack on Valte during the early days of the Manipur crisis, the Chief Minister expressed deep regret, saying, "My deepest regret is that on that particular afternoon, if I were with him, that incident would not have taken place."

He said his visit was a personal gesture of respect and friendship.

"Today, I came here to pay my last respects to my friend Pu Valte. It is a great honour for me to attend his funeral. Valte's family is like my family, and I will always extend any support whenever needed," he said.

The Chief Minister also recalled the tense situation during the initial phase of the violence and said every possible effort had been made to prevent further bloodshed and ensure the safety of public representatives.

Later, while speaking to reporters, Shri Khemchand Singh stressed that dialogue remains the only path to restoring peace in Manipur and said lasting peace is essential for the state's overall development.

Responding to a question on the roadmap to peace, the Chief Minister remarked, "Your smile is the way for peace," answering the reporter with a smile.

The Chief Minister, accompanied by MLA Shri Tongbram Robindro, offered floral tributes and prayed for the eternal peace of the departed leader. Others who paid homage included Shri Chinlunthang, MLAs Shri Letzamang and Shri V. Hangkhanlian, former ministers, tribal leaders, civil society organisations, government officials, supporters, and members of the public.

The mortal remains of late Vungzagin Valte were laid to rest at the YPA New Lamka Cemetery in Dorcas Veng after family members, friends, and well-wishers paid their final respects.

Late Vungzagin Valte is survived by his wife, one daughter, and two sons.

FIFA World Cup 2026 | RO-32: Egypt 4 – 2 Australia

EGYPT booked their place in the Round of 16 of the FIFA World Cup after beating AUSTRALIA 4-2 on penalties following a hard-fought 1-1 draw after full time at Dallas Stadium, Arlington, on Friday, . Egypt took the lead in the 13th minute through Emam Ashour, who finished calmly after a bright start by the Egyptian side. The Socceroos fought back with determination and levelled the match in the 55th minute when an own goal by Mohamed Hany brought the Socceroos back into the contest. Despite several chances at both ends, neither side could find a winner before the final whistle.

The penalty shoot-out began disastrously for Australia. Their opening kick sailed over the crossbar, while Egypt confidently converted their first attempt. Australia's fourth penalty struck the crossbar, leaving Egypt firmly in control. The Egyptians remained composed from the spot and secured a 4-2 shoot-out victory, ending Australia's World Cup journey. Egypt's discipline, patience and confidence under pressure proved decisive in one of the most dramatic matches of the Round of 32.

Football often rewards the team that stays calm when the pressure is greatest. Australia battled bravely, but missed opportunities in the shoot-out proved costly. Egypt now march into the Round of 16 with renewed belief and momentum.
