His fight ends, but for those of us who are still in the fight, his dedication and sacrifice will continue to inspire us all.

Know Your Leader: Shri Thanglianpau Guite, President ZRO/A

UNKNOWING beforehand to be a celebrated leader of 21st Century’s ZO PEOPLE across the globe, a humble leader was born at Mualnuam Village, Churachandpur, Manipur in 1960 as the first son of Mr. Khatkhothang and Mrs. Niangchiin, a cultivator by profession from his grandfather Late Awithang Guite @ Thangbuai Guite and grandmother Late Chingkhoniang.  

Still adolescent at time of the demise of his grandfather Late Awithang Guite @ Thangbuai Guite, for better livelihood they migrated to his maternal village known as Pangmual, a few kilometers away from Indo-Burma border adjacent to Kangkap Village, India.

Nurtured and brought up amidst poverty stricken, his education from different villages to metropolitan till  MSc (Zoology) from Rangoon University by 1987 is remarkably extra-ordinary. Being a part of student’s leaders of pro-democracy movement against the Military Junta in Burma, fortune favor the brave, he survived martial laws through thick and thin.

Being a vocal pro-democratic student’s leader, his popularity favored and became a nominal elected MP from Tonzang Constituency, through Zomi National Congress (ZNC) ticket in 1990. But he was never sworn in as an MP for the Burmese Military Junta nullified the election result.

When the majority of the elected MPs fled the country for fear of execution, he directly returned to Pangmual Village and finally reached his native birth place Mualnuam Village, CCPur, Manipur in 1993 and today his family permanently settle at New Lamka, Manipur.

His statesmanship made him the first Vice-President of ZRO in 1993 alongside Khaizasong Guite, the founding father of ZRO/A as President. He is sworn in as the President of ZRO/A in August, 1997 amidst Kuki-Zomi ethnic conflicts.

Sons of the soil, on his return to ancestral home, Mualnuam Village, he left no stone unturned for the upliftment of the society. Passport, Voter Identity Card and AADHAR Card were issued accordingly as he is a citizens of India by birth.

His native place or birth place being  Mualnuam Village, Churachandpur, Manipur, the questions of his citizenship does not arise. His grandfather Mr. Awithang Guite @ Thangbuai Guite even participated in the France Labor Corps during the First World War, the list of participation from the Village can still be traced at Mualnuam Souvenir, 2005, page 27.

Though his was once nominally elected as MP during his student day, he was never sworn in as an MP. Though his education and childhood sojourn were in Burma, hi is a natives of India. 

Today, his contributions within almost 30 years as the face of the marginalize people across his ancestral land through armed struggle and were instrumental in the signing SoO agreement with Indian Government, least to say.

PRESS STATEMENT BY THE TEN KUKI-ZOMI-HMAR MLAs OF MANIPUR LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY

Thursday, Feb. 29, 2024.

Apropos of the Manipur Legislative Assembly Resolution of today (Feb.29) seeking abrogation of Tripartite Agreement for Suspension of Operations with Kuki National Organisation & United People's Front attributing respon- sibility to the SoO Groups for the ongoing ethnic conflict in Manipur, we the Kuki-Zomi-Hmar MLAs would like to condemn and place on record our dissent and disapproval to this one sided resolution emanating from prejudice, bias and hatred for our community that reflects a myopic view on the issue.

The SoO Tripartite Agreement was first signed on August 22,2008 and subsequently renewed periodically with clearly laid down Ground Rules. As part of the Ground Rules, there is a strong mechanism in place called Joint Monitoring Group comprising of Central agencies, State Government agencies and the KNO & UPF reps meant for overseeing adherence to the Ground Rules. We would like to question whether the resolution adopted by the august House was based on any report or observations of the JMG, which is the only official mechanism to determine whether any violation of the Ground Rules has taken place or not. This obviously is not the case as the resolution is based on an overwhelming sense of animosity and hatred for a particular community. The Tripartite Agreement was lauded as the harbinger of peace and security in the state when it was signed in 2008, and truly so Manipur particularly the Hill Districts have witnessed a sea change in the security scenario as the level of violence came down drastically in the years that followed.

Successive governments have been taking their share of credit over improvement in the law and order situation in the state owing to signing of the Tripartite Agreement.

The recent signing of a Peace Accord with an UNLF Faction was initiated by the State Government, and the role played by this outfit during this short period in the current violence is widely known to one and all. The august House resolution would have evinced fairness and peace objective if the role played by the valley based outfit cited above too was highlighted as it is a clear case for seeking termination of the pact too.

This resolution was adopted to defame the KNO & UPF and further alienate the Kuki-Zomi-Hmar community as part of the continuing hate campaign.

We appeal to the Home Ministry, Government of India to consider all aspects of the issue in a fair and just manner to check further discrimination and alienation of the Kuki-Zomi-Hmar people.

The Wall of Remembrance Massacre

"There is no tyranny greater than that which is perpetrated under the shield of the law and in the name of justice."

While the deeply biased, vindictive and authoritarian Meitei Government has been relentlessly carrying out a series of anti-tribal agendas, the latest took the form of suspension of a Kuki Head Constable Siamlalpaul by Mr. Shivanand Surve, SP Churachandpur for an alleged offence that thousands in the valley have been allowed to get away with for far too long.

The love of a nation runs deep, transcending all ages and genders. An injustice and oppression upon one member of the community is felt to the core by all. And in necessary protest against the injustice of the state, two young lives have fallen, and at least 25 others injured by the bullets ordered to be directed at the civilian protestors by the powers that continue to disdain and oppress us.

Our frontlines are not just the buffer zones. They exist wherever our enemy exists, wherever oppression and tyranny exists. Those who die in the name of the nation at such a time are all martyrs for the same cause, and all are heroes whose names will live on. The nation salutes our martyrs of the The Wall of Remembrance Massacre.

KSO consoles the ultimate sacrifices made by Mr. Letlalkhuol Gangte and Mr Thanggunlen Haokip to the extent of laying down their lives in protesting against the unjust suspension of Mr. Siamlalpaul, and in defense of our ancestral Kuki lands.

To the parents of the deceased, to their beloved brothers and sisters, to  their near and dear ones, the KSO offers our deepest sympathies and heartfelt condolences. We will continue the fight against the evil forces. 

May God now grant them eternal peace!

February 2, 2024

The position of neutrality decided upon by the Nagas in the quest of peace and communal harmony in Manipur in the wake of the 3^rd May, 2023 violence brought about the following casualties amongst many others -

 

May 24, 2023 – 4 Naga women from Ukhrul attacked and molested by a mob in Imphal. June 18, 2023 – A Liangmai Naga house was burnt down at Leimakhong by Kukis.

July 16, 2023 – A Maring Naga woman was shot dead at Sawombung, Imphal and the body was found mutilated.

Sept 5, 20123 – A Liangmai farmer beaten by KRA personnel on Imphal-Tamei road for refusing to pay illegal tax.

September 27, 2023 – outrageous provocation & attempt to murder involving blatant gun firing against Naga leader by one individual self- proclaimed KNF cadre at Kangpokpi.

December 3, 2023 – 3 Tangkhul men were beaten up by armed Meiteis at Sawombung, Imphal

December 11, 2023 – 2 Rongmei Naga girls were beaten up at Bishnupur Bazaar. 

December 11, 2023 – 1 Naga driver from Tamenglong beaten up at Imphal.

December18, 2023 – 4 Naga girls working in beauty parlour were kidnapped in 

                        Imphal. 

January 29, 2024 – A Tangkhul Naga boy kidnapped from Mantripukhri, Imphal.

January 31, 2023 – 2 Zeliangrong Nagas kidnapped and held hostage from Bishnupur District The following unwarranted and unacceptable acts were also perpetrated upon the Nagas -

a)      Nagas subjected to unwarranted cutting off Inter Village Roads/blockage/construction of bunkers/ checking/frisking/extortion of taxes along the National Highways and inter-District roads by armed Kuki militants and womenfolk.

b)      Frisking/checking, violent behaviour, kidnapping, looting and extortion against Nagas by Meitei radicalized groups and womenfolk in Imphal valley.

c)       Collection of money from citizens on highways by Meira Paibis

d)      Churches burnt and demolished, and sacrilegious acts committed inside religious place of worship by the radicalized Meiteis in the name of waging war against a community.

In all these acts of violence, intimidation, disrespect and insult, the common admission of mistaken identity have been cited. In the interest of peace in spite of the extreme provocations, Nagas have addressed the many sensitive situations and sought to resolve them through customary laws and practices. Yet time and again our people have been attacked with impunity, making mockery of the many agreements and resolutions for restoration of peace and good relations.

The Meitei legislators, who have submitted to the Arambai Tengol in the 24^th January, 2024 Kangla capitulation cannot claim anymore to be the Government of the entire State of Manipur and has limited its powers, functions and relevance to the valley and the Meitei community only. Not to speak of reigning in the non-state actors it has allowed itself to be dictated and co-opted into a radicalized organization. It is no wonder that the attack on Nagas in Imphal valley have not been prevented nor addressed with state instruments as it should be with a state government in place.

 

The Meitei legislators and Government of India owes it to the people of India to explain what it has been doing for the last 9 months with the situation going from bad to worse day by day, while Nagas have become victims of its neutrality to the conflict.

In view of the above, the United Naga Council issue this statement particularly to the Meiteis and Kuki-Zo groups to immediately desist from targeting, provoking and attacking the Nagas, their homes and properties in the Imphal valley and also in the peripheral hill areas.

Should this appeal go disrespected in the Imphal valley, we will have no option but to call upon the Nagas populace in Imphal valley to vacate it for taking up further appropriate measures thereafter. 

On the same line, should the Kuki-Zo group continue with their targeting of Nagas, free access to Naga Township and villages and free passage across Naga areas will have to be prohibited.
