Rocket Attack Targets Myanmar Army Chief in Mandalay

Myanmar military chief Min Aung Hlaing was targeted in a rocket attack on January 27 while travelling to the Central Command (Lah Pah Kah). The group Brave Warriors for Myanmar (BWM) claimed responsibility, saying they fired five 107mm rockets under Mission 50.

According to the group, the attack was carried out with allied forces, including No More Dictatorship (NMD-PDF), Shadow (Mandalay), and Infinity, at around 4:30 am. The attack reportedly took place as Min Aung Hlaing was returning from a visit to a mock election site in Mandalay.

Three rockets are said to have hit the command area, possibly striking the commander's residence. Authorities are currently investigating the incident. Earlier, on December 28, 2025, BWM Mission 49 had carried out another attack that reportedly killed at least two soldiers.

134th Chin–Lushai Conference Emphasises Unity of Zo Kindred Communities

Lawngtlai, January 29, 2026: The 134th Chin–Lushai Conference, organised by the Zo Re-unification Organisation (ZORO), was held with significance and renewed commitment to unity on Wednesday at the Lal Thanhawla Auditorium in Lawngtlai.

The conference was graced by Mizoram Legislative Assembly Speaker Lalbiakzama as the chief guest. Addressing the gathering, the Speaker highlighted ZORO's long-standing efforts, since 1988, to bring the Chin kindred communities together under a common identity. He described the organisation's role in promoting unity among the Zo people as both meaningful and timely.

Recalling recent milestones, Lalbiakzama mentioned the launch of the Zo Indigenous Identity Card on December 24, 2024, an initiative led by ZORO, and encouraged the people to continue the movement with dedication and perseverance.
Referring to history, the Speaker noted that attempts made during the 1892 Chin–Lushai Conference to unite the Chin communities under a single administration had failed, resulting in the people being divided later by international boundaries. These divisions, he said, led to differences in territories and languages, but never broke the shared ancestry, blood ties, and brotherhood of the Zo people. He urged the community to remain united wherever they reside.

The theme of the 134th Chin–Lushai Conference was "Unity", reflecting the organisation's core objective.

The morning session was presided over by ZORO President R. Sangkawia while ZORO Vice President L. Ramdinliana Renthlei presented a report highlighting the organisation's activities and achievements. The afternoon session featured cultural programmes, during which Lalmuanpuia Punte, MLA and Adviser to the Chief Minister delivered the inaugural address.

The conference concluded with a renewed call for solidarity, cultural preservation, and collective effort towards strengthening unity among the Zo kindred communities.

ZNN Match Report: Khallai FC 3 - 2 PPFC | 29.01.2026

Match Report: Zomi Nam Ni Football Tournament
Final Score: Khallai FC 3 - 2 PPFC

In a thrilling encounter today at the ongoing Zomi Nam Ni football tournament, Khallai FC pulled off an impressive comeback to secure a victory against PAPA FC (PPFC).

The match was a tale of two halves. During the first half, PPFC dominated the scoreboard, heading into the break with a 2–1 lead over Khallai.

However, the momentum shifted dramatically in the second half. Khallai FC found their rhythm, netting two unanswered goals to overturn the deficit. The match concluded with a hard-fought 3–2 win for Khallai FC, marking a significant turnaround in the tournament standings.

Khallai FC enters the pitch needing a miracle: four goals to keep their tournament dreams alive. But as the minutes tick away, it becomes clear that luck has deserted them -- shots rattle the woodwork, and the bounces simply refuse to go their way.

🔖 The 78th Zomi Nam Ni Football Tournament 2026 Edition

⭕ Today's Matchday Update
28th January, 2026 (Wednesday)

📃 2nd Match Result :

The Shepherd's Football Academy 0-2 SYMROPIA FC

SYMROPIA FC concludes group-stage with a perfect win record

SYMROPIA FC became the first team to have concluded the group-stage as Pool champions as goals by Manglianthang and Napoleon Lunminlen Haokip ensured a 2-0 win against The Shepherd's Football Academy for their third win on the trot.

A draw would have been enough for The Shepherd's Football Academy to claim stake in the knock-out round and they fought brilliantly from the start but a simple finish by Manglianthang after fine work down the left flank by S. Kamthianjohn Ngaihte put SYMROPIA FC 1-0 up at half-time.

The Shepherd's Football Academy dug deep to get back into the match with the start of the second-half and they went really close to scoring midway but Blair Mungsianthang put his effort just wide before Dalliansang blasted another effort off target. However, any hopes of comeback for The Shepherd's Football Academy was all but dented as SYMROPIA FC put the match to bed when Napoleon Lunminlen Haokip popped in a rebound after Khupminlun Seldou's fierce strike was denied by goalkeeper Jonathan and SYMROPIA FC emerged Pool A champions with a 2-0 win.

Another qualifying slot for Group A is still at stake but today's result handed Khallai FC a new life as they take on Papa FC tomorrow. A win for Khallai FC in tomorrow's match against out of contention Papa FC will earn them a knock-out round place but failing to do so will give The Shepherd's Football Academy a place into the knock-out round.

Thadou Stands Independent, Rejects KIM Apex Body Claim

MEDIA RELEASE
Imphal, the 28th January, 2026

Thadou Stands Independent, Rejects KIM Apex Body Claim, Remains Neutral in Kuki-Naga Tensions

Thadou Inpi Manipur (TIM) issues this press statement to clarify its position in the interest of accuracy, civilian safety, and peaceful coexistence amid ongoing tensions in Manipur's hill areas.

Thadou Inpi Manipur is a civilian representative body of the Thadou people. It does not represent, align with, or act on behalf of any armed group, political organization, or military bloc.

TIM notes the Joint Press Statement issued by the United Naga Council (UNC) and the Kuki Inpi Manipur (KIM) on 27th January, 2026, which reflects that Thadou Inpi Manipur is not a constituent or part of Kuki Inpi Manipur. TIM further clarifies that the apex body of Kuki Inpi Manipur does not include Thadou Inpi Manipur, and TIM is not a member at any level of KIM's organizational structure. No mandate has been given by TIM for such inclusion.

TIM appreciates the spirit of peace and dialogue expressed in the joint statement.

Thadou Inpi Manipur reiterates that the Thadou people are a distinct community but not Kuki, and are not part of ongoing ethnic tensions with any communities. Any portrayal of Thadou as Kuki, or otherwise, misrepresents TIM's position and is against the aspirations of the Thadou people.

Thadou Inpi Manipur rejects violence in all forms, including armed mobilization, intimidation, vandalism, arson, and road blockades that disrupt civilian life and freedom of movement. The primary concern of Thadou Inpi Manipur remains the protection of civilian life, dignity, and safe movement. TIM calls upon all parties to respect civilian spaces and uphold humanitarian principles.

Thadou Inpi Manipur remains open to constructive, respectful dialogue on peace and civilian welfare, provided it respects accurate representation, mutual consent, and the distinct identity of the Thadou people.

NPO Calls Immediate Counter-Bandh Over CoTU Shutdown in Manipur

Senapati, Jan 28: The Naga People's Organisation (NPO) has announced an immediate counter-bandh in response to the continued shutdown enforced by the Committee on Tribal Unity (CoTU), citing serious hardship faced by Naga commuters.

In a press release issued on January 28, the NPO stated that despite a joint appeal by the United Naga Council (UNC) and Kuki Inpi Manipur (KIM), the bandh has not been lifted. The organisation said the ongoing disruption has severely affected the movement of people, especially those travelling for medical treatment and flight-related purposes.

The NPO described the continued bandh as irresponsible and unacceptable, stating that it has caused immense suffering to the general public. The organisation also expressed concern over the violation of basic human rights and disregard for public welfare.

In view of the situation, the NPO resolved to enforce a counter-bandh with immediate effect. It further urged the concerned authorities to take serious note of the matter and ensure the safety, dignity, and free movement of the public.

The organisation also appealed to the people to cooperate fully, maintain discipline, and uphold unity during this critical period.

Kuki Identity and History: A Clarification

The Kuki people have a rich and ancient history, woven into the fabric of Indian and Asian narratives. While they don't have a single epic text like the Mahabharata, their presence is acknowledged in various ancient sources, dating back to the 6th-7th century.

Ancient References:

- The Mahabharata (6th-7th century) mentions the Kiratas, mountain-dwelling people often linked to the Kukis, suggesting their ancient presence in the Northeast. The Kiratas are described as fierce warriors and skilled archers, indicating a strong and independent people.

- The Tripura Rajmala (6th-7th century), a royal chronicle of Tripura, details interactions with eastern hill tribes, referring to them as both Kukis and Kiratas. This text highlights the Kuki people's historical ties to the region and their interactions with neighboring kingdoms.

- Taranatha's History of Buddhism (1608 CE) counts the Kukis among the peoples of the eastern frontier, dating back to the early Buddhist period. This text provides evidence of the Kuki people's presence in the region during the Buddhist era.

- Chinese chronicles from the 5th century BCE mention "Chin" or similar names, connecting the Kuki-Chin people to ancient Southeast Asia and India. These records demonstrate the Kuki people's historical connections to the broader Asian region.

Kuki Identity:

The term "Kuki" predates British colonial times, with these ancient texts providing evidence of their long history in the region. The Kuki people have a distinct identity, recognized by British colonial records, including the Linguistic Survey of India (1904 CE) by GA Grierson, as 'Kukiland' or 'Kuki country'. This recognition underscores the Kuki people's unique cultural and historical identity.

Contested Identities:

Recent attempts to replace 'Kuki' with terms like 'Zo' or 'Zomi' lack historical basis. The term 'Zo' originated from the Mizo tribe in Mizoram and doesn't encompass the broader Kuki community, which includes people from India, Myanmar, and Bangladesh. 'Zo' is confined to Mizoram state politics only. 'Zomi', a term born in the 1990s, is referred to by media and some government sources as a label for illegal immigrants from Myanmar.

Respecting Self-Identification:

It's essential to respect the Kuki people's self-identification and not impose external labels. The Kuki people have a right to determine their own identity and future. Acknowledging and respecting their history and cultural heritage is crucial for building trust and understanding.

Kuki Culture:

The Kuki people have a vibrant culture that's rich in traditions, customs, and practices. They're known for their expertise in agriculture, particularly in cultivating crops like rice, maize, and millet. Their traditional attire is colorful and intricately designed, often featuring motifs that reflect their connection to nature. The Kuki people are also skilled craftsmen, known for their expertise in weaving, woodcarving, and bamboo work. Their festivals, like the Mim Kut and Chavang Kut, are celebrations of their harvest season and are marked with traditional dances, music, and feasting.

Resistance and Revolt:

The Kuki people have a long history of resistance against colonial and imperial powers. The Kuki Revolt of 1860-61 in Tripura was a major uprising led by Ratan Puia, sparked by the Tripura king's attempts to collect slaves from the Dupamuha community. The revolt resulted in significant loss of life, with 185 people killed and 100 taken prisoner.

The Anglo-Kuki War (1917-19) was a major conflict between the Kuki people and British colonial forces, lasting approximately 3 years (October 17, 1917 - December 8, 1919). The British suffered losses of 60 killed, 142 wounded, and 97 died of disease. The Kuki side had an estimated 120 killed, 126 villages burned, and extensive destruction of properties and livestock, including 576 mithuns.

Preserving History and Culture:

The Kuki people's history and culture are an integral part of India's rich tapestry. Efforts to distort or erase their identity must be countered with factual information and respect for their self-identification. By acknowledging and respecting the Kuki people's history and culture, we can work towards a more inclusive and equitable society.

Lamka Rally: "We Want POLITICAL Solution, not POPULAR Government" | Photos & Videos

In Lamka, a massive peaceful rally was organized today by the Kuki Students’ Organisation (KSO), Hmar Students’ Association (HSA), and Zomi Students’ Federation (ZSF). The protesters sent a clear message to New Delhi: they are demanding a permanent political solution—specifically a Union Territory with a legislature—rather than the restoration of a "popular government" in Manipur.

The rally comes at a high-stakes moment for the region. Union Home Minister Amit Shah is scheduled to meet with 10 Kuki-Zo MLAs in Guwahati today. This meeting is seen as a critical push by the Centre to break the political deadlock and reinstate an elected government before President’s Rule reaches its one-year limit on February 13, 2026.

Kuki Baptist Convention Condemns Arson Attack on K. Songlung Baptist Church

Lamka, the 27th January, 2026:  The Kuki Baptist Convention (KBC) strongly condemns the heinous act of arson perpetrated by armed cadres of the ZUF (Kamson Group) on January 26, 2026, at K. Songlung Part II, in broad daylight. This reprehensible act of violence targeted K. Songlung Baptist Church, an established member church of the KBC, under KBC Gambih (Parish) No. 7. The KBC views this incident as a disturbing manifestation of terrorism, perpetrated by a certain group of fellow Christian tribals seeking to exploit the prevailing conflict in Manipur, and causing immense distress to innocent villagers already grappling with numerous challenges.

We find it deeply troubling that instead of extending compassion and prayers, these individuals resort to violent acts, straying further from the path of peace and reconciliation. The KBC stands in unwavering solidarity with the villagers of K. Songlung Part II and its church members, committed to ensuring their basic human needs are met and their voices heard.

We appeal to like-minded individuals, groups, Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), Church organizations, and competent authorities to join hands in rebuilding the village and church at the earliest possible opportunity. Furthermore, we urge the perpetrators to reflect on their actions, seek redemption, and surrender to the authorities.

The KBC remains resolute in its commitment to promoting peace, justice, and harmony, and will continue to support those affected by this dishonourable act.

Thadou Website Officially Launched

The official Thadou website, www.thadou.com, was formally launched on January 22, 2026, at Hotel Imphal, Manipur. The website was inaugurated by Pu M. James Thadou, President of Thadou Inpi Manipur, the apex representative body of the Thadou tribe in Manipur.

The launch ceremony was attended by prominent leaders and members of the Thadou community, both in person and virtually, reflecting a collective commitment to safeguarding and asserting the distinct identity of the Thadou people.

Representatives from major civil society organisations of Manipur—including COCOMI, AMUCO, Arambai Tenggol (AT), and FOCS—were present, demonstrating broad-based civil society engagement and solidarity.

The newly launched website serves as an authoritative digital platform for the Thadou people in Manipur and across the globe. It aims to strengthen community connection, promote knowledge-sharing, and provide factual and authentic narratives on the history, culture, and distinct identity of the Thadou people, along with verified news, updates, and information. The platform will be continuously expanded and enriched.

A key feature of the website is its online Thadou tribe membership registration, designed to strengthen organisational unity, enhance participation, and reinforce collective representation.

Following the launch, an hours-long interactive discussion was held on the vision of Manipur as a united, inclusive, and multi-ethnic society. The discussion underscored the urgent need to correct ethnic misidentification and ensure accurate recognition of all indigenous communities of Manipur, including the Thadou people, who have often been misidentified due to ignorance, coercion, and political and historical distortion.

Participants noted that www.thadou.com will play a vital role in restoring community ownership, dignity, and pride, empowering the Thadou people to assert control over their identity and affairs, free from external influence or political agendas that undermine their distinct existence.

During the event, the contributions of Thadou Inpi Manipur and the Thadou community toward peace-building, social harmony, and the territorial integrity of Manipur were acknowledged and appreciated by participating civil society organisations.

The launch of www.thadou.com marks a significant step toward empowering the Thadou community, safeguarding its identity, and promoting truth, unity, and peaceful coexistence in Manipur.

Thadou Inpi Manipur calls upon members of the Thadou community to visit and contribute to the website, and appeals to the media and the people of Manipur to support the Thadou community's legitimate efforts to reclaim and assert its rightful identity in the larger interest of justice and social harmony.

THRA: "Under President's Rule, Govt Must Act Now:"

MEDIA RELEASE
27th January, 2026

Under President's Rule, Govt Must Act Now: THRA Condemns Failure to Prevent Civilian Attacks in Kangchup Area

Thadou Human Rights Advocacy (THRA) reiterates its unequivocal opposition to all forms of armed intimidation, threats, vandalism, and violence against civilian communities in Manipur, regardless of the group involved.

Earlier this month, THRA condemned the Government of India for its failure to enforce Suspension of Operations (SoO) ground rules, which enabled armed cadres of the Kuki National Front (KNF/UPF) to terrorise Ireng Naga village on 11 January 2026, including defacement of monoliths with provocative slogans, destruction of public property, and explicit threats to burn down the village.

Similarly, THRA strongly condemns the arson attack on 26 January 2026 at K. Songlung village, carried out by the Zeliangrong United Front (ZUF), a group allegedly under a Cessation of Operations (CoO) agreement with government. The burning of structures and displacement of civilians constitute grave human rights violations and have caused widespread fear.

While illegal poppy cultivation is a serious concern, THRA firmly rejects any action that results in the destruction of civilian homes and property. Such acts only deepen ethnic divisions and civilian suffering.

Amid the ongoing road blockade by the Joint Tribe Council (JTC) following the January 11 incident at Ireng Naga, this attack on civilian residences is particularly unfortunate.

Under President's Rule, the Government of India must act decisively to protect civilians, enforce existing agreements impartially, restrain all armed groups, and resolve disputes through lawful, inclusive, and peaceful means.

Outstanding issues, such as, relocation of SoO camps and mass poppy cultivation in the Kangchup area, drug trafficking routes connecting various Naga villages (and named after a militant leader, such as German/Tiger Road), and any land disputes over ownership raised by various bodies—must be addressed by the Indian State urgently and amicably.

THRA demands an immediate investigation, accountability, and compensation for victims of the K. Songlung attack.

We once again call for an end to mislabeling and misidentification of ethnic communities, respecting self-identification, including the Paite community's clear stance that they are not Kuki like Thadou—as this is essential for resolving Manipur's broader crisis.
